NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] SLOVENIAN PREMIER TO VISIT ATHENS TOMORROW ON OFFICIAL VISITWeb Posted: 18:54 GMT+2Athens, 28/10/1998 (MPA) Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek will embark on an official visit to Greece tomorrow where he will meet with President Kostis Stephanopoulos, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis,Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis and Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos. This marks the first official visit by a Slovenian prime minister to Greece. Mr. Drnovsek's visit is expected to focus on Slovenian efforts to join the European Union. Greece is one of the countries that has not yet ratified the EU agreement with Slovenia but is expected to place the issue on the parliamentary agenda soon. [02] PREMIER'S MESSAGE ON «NO DAY»Web Posted: 18:54 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 28/10/1998 (MPA) Prime Minister Kostas Simitis stated that the country needed to show the same determination in meeting new challenges as that shown when it refused an Italian ultimatum to surrender and was dragged into World War II.In a message issued on the occasion of today's "Ohi (No) Day", when Greece rebuffed Mussolini's demand, Mr. Simitis said Greeks were "required to show the same decisiveness as the generation of the '40s". "In the world of today, whatever makes Greece strong is patriotic," the Premier's message read. "Greece must be strong so as to participate equally in all the levels and procedures of the new European entity, to be active and have a dynamic presence in the Balkans, to deal with organized crime, drug trafficking, racism and xenophobia, to proclaim from all international podiums the need for respect and maintenance of international law and to avert any threat thanks to the worthiness of the Greek Armed Forces. "The Greek people are well aware that the Greece of new opportunities, development and social justice, the Greece of the 21st century demands sacrifices and hard work. And it is prepared to give its all to achieve this final aim. I am certain that the message of decisiveness of the generation of the 40s inspires and teaches all Greeks, who want to feel proud of their country at the threshold of the 21st century," the message said. [03] PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE IN THESSALONIKI'S NATIONAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONSWeb Posted: 18:54 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 28/10/1998 (MPA) President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos, in Thessaloniki today where he attended the military parade in honor of the national holiday, stated that the commemoration was a "crowning moment in Greek history and a source of national pride".The President added that the national holiday served to remind Greeks that "with unity, we can achieve miracles." "National consensus is especially imperative today, in light of the challenges our country is called on to meet as a member of the European Union and in the light of the uncertainty and instability noted in the region of the Balkans. "Greece has the standing conviction that the unreserved respect for international, democratic values and human rights are the safest road for the promotion of peace, economic prosperity and social development worldwide, and is a factor of stability in the region of the Balkans," the president's message read. Mr. Stephanopoulos also mentioned that Cyprus would certainly join the European Union, which would "contribute to the resolution of the Cyprus problem and the rapprochement of the two communities to the advantage of all." [04] GRANDIOSE MILITARY PARADE IN THESSALONIKI HONORS NATIONAL HOLIDAYWeb Posted: 18:54 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 28/10/1998 (MPA) Three-day celebrations came to an end in Thessaloniki today with a military parade honoring the commemoration of 'NO Day' -- the 58th anniversary of Greece's entry into W.W.II.Greece's political and military leaders were present, with the state represented by the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos and the Prime Minster represented by the Minster of National Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos. On Monday Thessaloniki celebrated the feast day of its patron saint, St. Dimitrius, and the city's liberation from Ottoman rule. [B] BALKANS[05] MILOSEVIC ABIDES BY NATO'S DEADLINE TO APPLY AGREEMENTWeb Posted: 18:54 GMT+2Belgrade, 28/10/1998 (MPA) NATO has announced that it would refrain from threatened air strikes against Serb targets because Yugoslavia had met demands to reduce its forces in the Serbian province of Kosovo and allow humanitarian groups to assist refugees who had fled the region.Nevertheless, NATO retained the military threat to make sure Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic carried out his pledges to abide by U.N. Security Council demands that he stop the repression of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo who are seeking autonomy. An international air-and-ground monitoring system also will monitor Yugoslavia's compliance.
