    [A] GREECE

    [01] GREEK AND ALBANIAN CULTURE MINISTERS' MEETING

    Athens, 16/01/1999 (MPA) The construction of a building with the financial backing of Greece to house the National Theater in Tirana, a request expressed by Albanian prime minister Panteli Majko during his meeting in Athens last November with his Greek counterpart Kostas Simitis, which won the positive response of Greece, was among the issues that were discussed in the meeting of Greek and Albanian culture ministers Evangelos Venizelos and Enti Rama held in Athens.

    The ministers also discussed the materialization of the contents of the joint statement that was signed in December 1997 by Mr. Venizelos and the then Albanian culture minister Arta Dante on the sector of cultural heritage and development.

    A number of cultural events are expected to be promoted within this framework such as a Greek Cinema Week in Tirana, theater performances and a special event in the city of Koritsa dedicated to Greek Nobel prize winner poet Giorgos Seferis.

    [02] GREECE COMES FIRST AMONG THE EU STATES IN THE NUMBER OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

    Athens, 16/01/1999 (MPA) Greece comes first in the number of deadly traffic accidents among the European Union member-states as an average of 2.000 people are killed each year.

    According to official data coming from the Greek motorists club ELPA, each year about 45.000 people are killed and 1.600.000 are injured in road accidents across the European Union.

    It should be noted that 7.500 people would have been alive today if they had fastened their seat-belts.

    [03] ARIEL SHARON WILL BE IN GREECE IN FEBRUARY

    Athens, 16/01/1999 (MPA) Israeli foreign minister Ariel Sharon will be in Greece on February 25.

    Meanwhile, Israeli sources have characterized as "positive and constructive" the recent visit by a delegation of the Greek socialist governing party of PASOK to Israel headed by undersecretary of foreign affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis and PASOK's executive bureau member Theodoros Tsoukatos.

    [04] MR. KARAMANLIS WILL BE ON A THREE-DAY VISIT TO SPAIN

    Athens, 16/01/1999 (MPA) Leader of right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis will visit Spain on January 17-19 at the invitation of Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar. Mr. Karamanlis during his visit to Spain will attend the European Popular Party leaders' meeting.

    Mr. Karamanlis will be accompanied by New Democracy press spokesman Aris Spiliotopoulos and European Union international relations secretary Yiannis Valinakis.

    [05] THE GREEK MINISTER OF LABOR WILL VISIT CYPRUS ON SUNDAY

    Athens, 16/01/1999 (MPA) Greek minister of labor and social welfare Miltiadis Papaioannou will visit Cyprus on Sunday and on Monday he will meet in Nicosia with Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides.

    Mr. Papaioannou will also have contacts with Cypriot parliament president Spiros Kiprianou and his Cypriot counterpart Andreas Mousioutas.

    [06] NEW MEETING OF OA MANAGEMENT AND PILOTS

    Athens, 16/01/1999 (MPA) The state-run Olympic Airways management will start a new round of talks with the airline's pilots on Monday.

    In an extraordinary general assembly meeting they held yesterday the pilots rejected the management proposal giving them three day-offs a month. It should be reminded that the OA management has decided to cancel two to five flights every day.

    [07] THE VOTE ON THE CENSURE MOTION AGAINST ARSENIS WILL BE HELD AT MIDNIGHT

    Athens, 16/01/1999 (MPA) The open vote on the censure motion tabled by right-wing opposition party of New Democracy in the Greek parliament against minister of education Gerasimos Arsenis will be held at midnight tonight. However, the speech of prime minister Kostas Simitis that will be delivered in parliament this evening is awaited with great interest.

    Meanwhile, the secondary education students announced that they will hold two protest rallies on Tuesday and Thursday. The prosecutor's office in Thessaloniki filed a complaint against anyone responsible for public order disturbance and illegal violence during yesterday's incidents that took place outside the court building.

    [08] PANGALOS WILL BE IN SOFIA ON TUESDAY

    Sofia, 16/01/1999 (MPA) Issues of bilateral interest as well as the regional cooperation will be discussed during Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos' visit to Sofia next Tuesday where he will meet with his Bulgarian counterpart Nadezda Michailova.

    In his one-day visit to Bulgaria, the Greek foreign minister will also be received by prime minister Ivan Kostov and parliament president Jordan Sokolov.

    [09] NEW TENSION IN KOSOVO

    Belgrade, 16/01/1999 (MPA) Tension erupted again in Kosovo. Fifteen ethnic Albanian rebels were killed in clashes between the Yugoslav forces and the Kosovo Liberation Army at the village of Racak.

    Meanwhile, two members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which oversees the uneasy truce in the Serb province, were injured from gunfire.

    Albanian prime minister Panteli Majko expressed fears that the crisis in Kosovo can spread to neighbouring countries.
