    Web Posted: 16:27 GMT+2
Athens, 05/06/1999 (MPA) Greece is certain that will join the European Economic and Monetary Union, according to Greek undersecretary of finance Nikos Christodoulakis. Speaking in an event organized by large banking organizations in London, he said that the indexes of the Greek economy show that Greece's course toward the EMU will be unhindered.

Regarding inflation, he stated that it is at the lowest levels of the past 35 years. Inflation was down to 2.4% in the month of May compared to 2.8% in April and according to National Statistics Agency general secretary Nikos Karavidis, the drop is mainly due to the lowered hotel rates in May.

[02] NATO OFFICIALS WILL MEET WITH THE CHIEF OF THE YUGOSLAV ARMED FORCES

Belgrade, 05/06/1999 (MPA) NATO continues the bombing of Kossovo, while alliance officials are scheduled to meet today with the chief of the Yugoslav armed forces at the borders of Yugoslavia with FYROM.

In the peacekeeping force that will be deployed in Kossovo, Greece will participate with a 3.000 men strong mechanized brigade and half of the force will be among the first military missions sent to the region. The final decisions on the issue will be reached by the governmental council of foreign affairs and defense on Monday. NATO has set strict 48-hour deadlines for the withdrawal of the air defense systems and a 7-day deadline for the withdrawal of the rest forces.

Representatives of the US defense department have stated that the bombing could stop on Sunday evening if the Serb withdrawal is speedy. In a different case the bombing will continue.

[03] THE OCALAN TRIAL WILL CONTINUE ON TUESDAY

    Web Posted: 16:27 GMT+2
Ankara, 05/06/1999 (MPA) The trial of Kurdish PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan will resume in the Turkish prison-island of Imrali on June 8 and his sentencing to death is regarded as certain.

The trial was monitored in the past week by Bill Butler of the US department of the UN Human Rights Committee and he is expected to draw up a report that will be submitted to committee president Mary Robinson.

It should be noted that German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in a press conference he gave in Cologne after the EU summit meeting expressed his opposition to the imposition of the death penalty on Ocalan. He stressed that Turkey has to observe the human rights and the rights of minorities that are included in article 6 of the agreement reached with the European Union.

[04] THE AMERICAN-HELLENIC INSTITUTE CALLS FOR ECEVIT'S TRIAL AS WAR CRIMINAL

    Web Posted: 16:27 GMT+2
Washington, 05/06/1999 (MPA) The American-Hellenic Institute with a letter addressed to US state department ambassador at large for war crimes issues David Scheffer calls for the indictment of Turkish prime minister Bulent Ecevit for war crimes.

In a letter signed by Eugene Rossides, dated June 2, Ecevit is accused of the forcible displacement of 200.000 Greek Cypriots during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the killing of 4.000 Greek Cypriots, the abduction of 5 US citizens by the Turkish forces and the illegal occupation of 37.3% of the Cypriot territory.

In the letter it is also stressed that Turkey during the 15-year war against the Kurds forced 2.5 million people to leave their homes and abandon 2.600-3.000 villages. Also, Turkey is accused of the tortures and deaths of 30.000 innocent Kurds as well as of human rights violations.

The letter calls for the trial of other Turkish politicians and military officials as well who are involved in war crimes committed during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and in the genocide of the Kurds.
