    [01] FACE COSMETICS MADE IN BELGIUM ARE ADDED TO THE LIST OF DIOXIN CONTAMINATED FOOD PRODUCTS

    Thessaloniki, 12/06/1999 (MPA) The Belgian authorities are not in the position to trace the causes of the food contamination with dioxin and this is a big problem, stated EU commissioner responsible for the protection of consumers Ms. Emma Bonino.

    The Belgian made face cosmetics are now added to the list with the dioxin contaminated food products as they are thought to be also harmful to the health of consumers.

    The scientific committee of the Greek Drug Organization will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to examine the issue. Minister of agriculture Giorgos Anomeritis suggested to consumers to avoid using cosmetics made in Belgium.

    [02] 42.000 GREEKS PERMANENT RESIDENTS OF OTHER EU COUNTRIES VOTE TODAY

    Athens, 12/06/1999 (MPA) A total of 42.000 Greeks, who are permanent residents of other European Union member states, are voting today in about 100 polling stations that have opened in the Greek embassies and consulates.

    The voting results will be announced tomorrow after 9:00pm together with the rest European Union member states.

    [03] 8.912.901 GREEKS GO TO THE POLLS TOMORROW

    Thessaloniki, 12/06/1999 (MPA) The fifth Euro-elections will be held in Greece tomorrow. The 8.912.901 voters are called to vote for 25 Euro- deputies, who will represent the country to the Euro-parliament for the next five years.

    The polling stations will open at 7:00am and will close at 7:00pm, while the counting of the votes will start at 9:00pm together with the rest European Union countries. The voters should have with them their voting booklet and identity card or passport.

    A total of 626 deputies will be elected to the European Parliament namely, Germany will elect 99, France 87, Italy and Britain each will elect 64 deputies, Spain 31, Holland, Greece, Belgium and Portugal each will elect 25, Sweden 22, Austria 21, Denmark and Finland 16 deputies each, Ireland 15 and Luxembourg 6.

    [04] A BRITISH C-130 CRASHED IN ALBANIA

    Kukes, 12/06/1999 (MPA) A British C-130 transport plane crashed in northern Albania last night at a small distance from a refugee camp, according to NATO officials.

    The 12 soldiers on board the C-130 plane are safe and only 1 of them was seriously injured.

    The British ministry of defense announced that the plane was getting ready to land when a fire broke out at its storage space. The pilot attempted to interrupt the landing process but he did not have the time and the plane hit on a military vehicle on the ground crashing 100 meters away from a refugee camp.

    [05] THE FIRST NATO PEACEKEEPERS HAVE ARRIVED IN KOSOVO

    Belgrade, 12/06/1999 (MPA) The first NATO troops arrived in Kossovo this morning within the framework of the international force that will be deployed in the region, while at the same time the withdrawal of the Serb forces continues.

    The first to arrive were British paratroopers followed by a French battalion. Commander of the peacekeeping force, general Michael Jackson is expected to arrive in Pristina later in the afternoon, while the Greek force is expected to the region in the next few days.

    [06] NATO ATTEMPTS TO DOWNPLAY THE RUSSIAN PRESENCE IN KOSOVO

    Brussels, 12/06/1999 (MPA) The representatives of NATO watched in surprise yesterday the Russian troops to enter the regional capital of Pristina in Kossovo and today they tried to downplay the event stating that they have nothing to worry about.

    NATO spokesman Jammie Shea stated that this was not some dramatic event and made it known that the alliance remains in close contact with Russia.

    However, it is still unknown who gave the orders from Moscow for the deployment of the Russian troops.

    [07] CLINTON LEARNED FROM TELEVISION ABOUT THE ARRIVAL OF THE RUSSIAN TROOPS IN PRISTINA

    Washington, 12/06/1999 (MPA) Yesterday's arrival of the Russian troops in Pristina appears to have caught the US leadership off guard. The US television network CNN reported that even US president Bill Clinton learned about the news from the television.

    Meanwhile, Russian military circles have mentioned that Russia's representative to NATO, Victor Zavarzin is already in Kossovo's regional capital Pristina.
