[A] NATIONAL NEWS
[01] SIMITIS: NEED FOR CREATIVE OCCUPATION WITH THE HISTORY OF
MACEDONIA
Prime minister Kostas Simitis, in his message on the occasion
of the formal inauguration of the building housing the Alexander
the Great Institute that took place in Litochoro, Pieria, stressed
the need for creative occupation with the history of Macedonia
which will contribute to the effort of the Greeks for greater self-
knowledge and deeper understanding of their Balkan neighbors.
The prime minister expressed joy over the fact that the
Macedons living abroad in cooperation with the Greek authorities
took the initiative to open the road for the systematic and
continuous study and promotion of the achievements of Alexander
the Great.
Mr. Simitis stressed that Alexander the Great was and still
is a model for leaders around the world and a cherished hero for
entire peoples. He added that at a time when a new era is dawning
in which the world economy dominates and the creation of a world
society is close, Alexander the Great is again the dominating
figure as he was the first ever in human history who was truly
interested in all the peoples of the then known world and was the
one who incited the transformation of classical Greece into a way
of thought that affected the people around the world.
[02] MESSAGE OF THE SAE PRESIDENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE
INAUGURATION OF THE ALEXANDER THE GREAT INSTITUTE
World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, president Andrew
Athens, in his message on the occasion of the inauguration of the
Alexander the Great Institute, stressed its importance for the
Greeks living abroad, while at the same time he underlined the
close ties of SAE with the Pan-Macedonian Associations.
Mr. Athens also stated that the contribution of the Pan-
Macedonian Associations both toward Greece and the Greeks living
abroad is priceless and many-sided.
He said that as the president of SAE he sees the great
importance of this project which is the work of Macedons, as the
seat of SAE is also in Macedonia. Mr. Athens stated that he hopes
for close cooperation and wished for success in every effort,
while he congratulated all those who contributed to the
materialization of this great project.
[03] THE GREEK-TURKISH DIALOGUE WILL OPEN ON MONDAY
The Greek-Turkish dialogue at specialists' level will be
underway on Monday as scheduled after yesterday's telephone
communication between the foreign ministers of Greece and Turkey,
Giorgos Papandreou and Ismail Cem.
The two ministers agreed to maintain low tones and create a
genial climate. They also decided to have a private meeting in
Sarajevo next Friday on the sidelines of the summit meeting for
the Balkan stability pact.
[04] THE GREEK UNDERSECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS MET WITH THE
ARCHBISHOP OF ALBANIA
The course of the Christian Orthodox Church in Albania was
the main issue for discussion in the meeting of Greek
undersecretary of foreign affairs Grogoris Niotis with Archbishop
Anastasios of Tirana and All of Albania yesterday.
The Greek state always offers its support to the Orthodox
Church of Albania, stated Archbishop Anastasios, who presented to
Mr. Niotis the new initiatives of the Archbishopric on
ecclesiastic, education and cultural issues.
Also, the Archbishop announced that a World Council of
Hellenes Abroad, SAE, delegation headed by its president Andrew
Athens will visit Albania on
July 27-29.
[05] INAUGURATION OF "ALEXANDER'S CHAMBER"
Speaker of the greek parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis will
inaugurate today "Alexander's Chamber", a
foundation to honor Alexander the Great. It is a majestic and
glorious building with was constructed on the initiative of the
Macedonian Association of America and Canada in Litohoro of
Pieria, on the Thessaloniki-Athens national highway, in order to
host an international cultural centre, where the works of the
great Macedonian victorious army commander
and civilisator will be presented.
[06] PREMIER'S MEETINGS WITH POLITICAL LEADERS
Greek premier begins a round of contacts with the
political leaders of the greek partIes on the
subject of crime and illegal immigration. Mr Simitis will meet
today with the General Secretary of the Communist Party, Aleka
Papariga and president to of the Coalition Party, Nikos
Konstantopoulos.
On Monday he will meet with presidents of New Democracy,
Kostas Karamanlis and DIKKI, Dimitris Tsovolas.
[B] INTERNATIONAL NEWS
[07] SCHROEDER WILL VISIT KOSOVO
German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will be in Kosovo today
to visit the German force which participates in the international
peacekeeping mission, known as KFOR.
According to German officials, Mr. Schroeder will also have
talks with political administrator of the UN in the region,
Bernard Kusner, while he will also meet with representatives of
the ethnic Albanian and the Serb communities.
[08] THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EUROPEAN SOCIALIST PARTIES MEET IN
VIENNA
Ministers of foreign affairs Giorgos Papandreou and defense
Akis Tsochatzopoulos as well as deputy foreign minister Yiannos
Kranidiotis represent the Greek governing socialist party of PASOK
in the meeting of the European Socialist Parties that is being
held in Vienna. The topics of discussion concern mainly the
reconstruction of the Balkans, security and human rights in the
region.
Minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos stressed that the
socialists have equated the security of Europe with the security
of the Balkans and added that a precondition for security is a
stable political support to the states of the region.
Foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou underlined the need for
the Balkans to become a region of friendship, cooperation,
development and multi-cultural co-existence. Deputy foreign
minister Mr. Kranidiotis backed the continuous support to the
Balkan peoples without exemptions.
The conclusions of the Vienna meeting will be presented in
the summit meeting that will be held in Sarajevo next week.
[09] THE TURKS ARRESTED A GREEK CYPRIOT WITH CANADIAN NATIONALITY
A court in the Turkish occupied part of Nicosia ordered
yesterday the 3day detention of Greek Cypriot Rogiros Georgiou,
who has a Canadian nationality and was abducted on Wednesday
afternoon by the Turkish occupation forces.
The news was reported by the Turkish Cypriot newspaper
"Kipris" under the headline "Impudent Greek Cypriot". The
newspaper stressed that when Georgiou appeared in court stated
that he is not aware of the name of the Turkish Cypriot pseudo-
state, does not recognize borders and as a human being has the
right of free movement.
He also added that he will bring the Turkish Cypriot pseudo-
state to the International Court for Human Rights, that he is a
Canadian national and that he wants to contact the Canadian
embassy.
[10] THE GREEK-ALBANIAN RELATIONS ARE IMPROVING CONSTANTLY, STATED
THE GREEK AMBASSADOR TO ALBANIA
Greece is willing to help Albania in every sector, stated
Greece's ambassador to Tirana Alexandros Mallias.
In an interview with the newspaper "Gazeta Skiptare" he
clarified that the Greek police operations target the illegal
immigrants and those who violate and do not respect the Greek
laws.
He also stressed that bilateral relations improve constantly
and Greece offers economic support to Albania both at a state
level and through the European Union. Mr. Mallias also stated that
through the Balkan stability pact this cooperation will develop
even further and underlined the presence of hundreds of Greek
businesses in Albania that play a significant role to the
development of its economy.
[11] TURKEY: MIT ARRESTED OTHER 25 ACTIVE MEMBERS OF PKK
Based on information reported by the Russian mass media, the
Turkish secret services have launched a wide operation aimed at
the arrest of high ranking members of the Kurdish Workers Party,
PKK.
After the arrest in Moldavia last week of Ceval Soysal, one
of the leading members of PKK, the Turkish secret services
proceeded yesterday with the arrests of other 25 active members of
the organization in Istanbul, Ankara, Ismir and Batman.
The Turkish newspaper "Sabah" reported that Soysal is accused
of PKK activities in Moldavia and Romania since 1991 and also of
being responsible for the training of PKK fighters.
[12] NATO AND RUSSIAN OFFICIALS MEET
Diplomats from Russia and NATO meet today in Brussels to
discuss the peacemaking mission in Kosovo. Meanwhile
a poll published yesterday by a Belgrade daily reports
that 71% of the Serb population is not content by Slobodan
Milosevic's policy and 41% of the people says that he should
resign at once.
