NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] US PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON TO VISIT GREECE IN NOVEMBERWeb Posted: 18:51 GMT+2Athens, 08/08/1999 (MPA) United States President Bill Clinton is to conduct an official visit to Greece between November 22-24, according to an Athens daily.The newspaper "To Vima" reports that a delegation of US secret service agents is already in Athens where they are conducting security checks of the premises to be visited by the President. President Clinton will be received by the Greek Premier Costas Simitis, although the agenda of the items to be discussed remains open. Prior to his visit to Greece, President Clinton will be in Istanbul in order to attend the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe meeting. A.F. [B] BALKANS[03] ALBANIA: REPUBLICAN PARTY OFFICIALLY ASKS FOR MAJKO'S EXITWeb Posted: 18:51 GMT+2Tirana, 08/08/1999 (MPA) Albania's Republican Party, the main opposition party following the six-member coalition "Union for Democracy", has asked for the resignation of the Panteli Majko government and wants early elections.In an exclusive interview with the Macedonian Press Agency, the Republican Party's leader Fatmir Mediu stated that the "resignation of the Majko government, which is in reality a socialist government in spite of the fact that it feature the participation of five political parties, in the only solution for bringing order to Albania." Mr. Mediu stated that the reason his party is demanding that the government step down is that "there is no state in Albania, the (country) has been transformed into a battlefield where gangs and gangsters are the most honored and are making the laws themselves," adding that there are no laws in Albania, only vengeance." Referring to the coalition's leaders, Mr. Mediu said that they are encouraging trafficking, corruption and crime. A.F. [04] TENSION MOUNTS IN NORTHERN KOSOVOWeb Posted: 18:51 GMT+2Prishtina, 08/08/1999 (MPA) Tension continues to mount in northern Kosovo following yesterday's armed conflict between French troops participating in the international peacekeeping force KFOR and Albanians in the city of Mitrovica.The episodes erupted when the Albanians tried to enter the city's Serb region and the French troops obstructed them. KFOR is presently in a state of alert as fears abound that the Albanians will attempt to enter the region anew. A.F.
