[08] SIMITIS: ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD IN SEPTEMBER

    Web Posted: 15:23 GMT+2
Athens, 09/10/1999 (MPA) Prime minister Kostas Simitis stated that the governing socialist party of PASOK is a power of renewal and modernization and those were the reasons that led the people to put their trust in it 3 years ago in September of 1996. Greece has been changed radically in the 25 years since the party was created, said the prime minister, speaking before 2.500 party officials in a stadium in Piraeus.

On Greece's course toward the EMU, he said that the country moves toward true convergence, while he attacked again the opposition accusing it of denial and populism.

Finally, Mr. Simitis referred to the election of the president of the republic and the candidature of the current president Kostis Stephanopoulos. He said that Mr. Stephanopoulos with the excellent way he exercises his duties honors the institution of the presidency and is widely respected by the Greek people. Therefore, he said, his election must not be characterized by confrontations and party politics.

The prime minister also denied a newspaper report according to which, express elections will be held in February, by saying that such reports are figments of imagination, while he added that the course followed is steady and elections will be held in September 2000.
