NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] FIVE IRAQI ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS KILLED, AFTER ENTERING MINEFIELDWeb Posted: 18:53 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 31/10/1999 (MPA) Five Iraqis were killed and 16 injured today when they strayed into a minefield in northeastern Greece after illegally crossing the border from Turkey near the Kipi border post in Evros, according to police reports.Five of the injured, who are being treated at the Alexandroupolis General Hospital, were reported to be in critical condition. Military personnel removed the wounded and 15 other Iraqis, who were unhurt, from the site of the blast. No names have been released. The survivors claimed that they had paid two Iraqi immigrant traffickers a fee of $3,600 to ferry them across the Evros river, police said. One of the traffickers had pointed to the barbed wire fence surrounding the minefield as the group's entry point into Greece, the survivors said. A.F. National economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou will present Greece's Balkan reconstruction plan, to be followed by an exchange of views with his Balkan counterparts. The event is jointly organized by the Industries Association of Northern Greece (SVVE), the International Trade Fair of Thessaloniki and the Euromoney publications. A.F. New Democracy's spokesperson responded by stating that Mr. Simitis will not be able to escape defeat in the next parliamentary elections.A.F. [B] BALKANS[06] GREECE TO TAKE PART IN BULGARIAN TELECOMS FORUMWeb Posted: 18:53 GMT+2Sofia, 31/10/1999 (MPA) More than 20 Greek telecommunications companies will participate in a Greek-Bulgarian telecommunications forum to be held in Sadanski, Bulgaria, on November 3-5.``The forum is organized by the American Commerce, Industry and Science Council for Greece and the Balkans, based in Thessaloniki and aims to promote regional cooperation and joint ventures by Greek and Bulgarian companies. The forum's main attraction is an evolving alliance between Hellenic Telecommunications Organization with Bulgaria's state telecoms company. Telecommunications companies from the two countries will have the opportunity to discuss further cooperation. A.F. Tito Petkovski, 45, of the opposition party Social- Democratic Alliance (SDSM), is reported to be ahead in opinion polls.
