  • [01] BODY ORGAN DONATION CAMPAIGN A campaign for the informing and sensitization of the public on body organ donation, begins on November 3 in Patras, organized by the National Transplant Organization.

    It is noted that our country holds last position in supply of body organs. This results in the death of people due to lack of transplants.

  • [02] MAGRIOTIS STATEMENTS TO THE MPA The new Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giannis Magriotis, characterized his taking up of duties as a happy and special moment, in statements he made to the Macedonian Press Agency after yesterday's swearing in of the new government in the presence o f the President of the Republic, K. Stefanopoulos, and Prime Minister K. Simitis. At the same time he expressed his satisfaction at going to familiar, friendly and dear places.

    "It is a happy and special moment for me to take up the position of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, responsible for Greek living abroad issues, the most beautiful and tender part of Hellenism, pointed out Mr. Magriotis. In an era characterized by glo balization, and intensely colored by an international crisis, Greeks living abroad have a very important role to play. However they need our assistance during all these difficult days, and I'm sure we will succeed. A further honor, is that I will be given

    the chance to work with the Council of Greeks Living Abroad (SAE) and with people in Thessaloniki, the base of Greeks living abroad, to give it the glorious visage it deserves".

  • [03] KARAMANLIS-STEFANOPOULOS IN THESSALONIKI FOR CELEBRATIONS President of the Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos is coming to Thessaloniki tonight, for the celebrations of St. Dimitrios and the October 28 commemoration of the refusal to surrender to the Germans in WWII, while the President of New Democracy, Kostas Kara manlis, will arrive in the afternoon.

    Mr. Stefanopoulos will arrive at "Macedonia" airport tonight at 8pm, where he will be greeted by Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Giorgos Paschalidis, Prefect Kostas Papadopoulos, Mayor Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, MPs and representatives of the authorities, wh ile a small military detail will also be present. The President of the Republic will be greeted by Mayor Papageorgopoulos, and a reply by Mr. Stefanopoulos will follow.

    Mr. Stefanopoulos will stay in Thessaloniki until Sunday, for the military parade on Alexander the Great Avenue, after having lain down a wreath at the Iroho of the 3rd Army Corps. Over the weekend he will attend various exhibits and will be present at c hurch for the ceremonies in honor of Thessaloniki's patron saint, St. Dimitrios.

  • [04] ISRAELI AMBASSADOR IN THESSALONIKI An official visit to Thessaloniki will be made by Israeli Ambassador David Sasson, drawing on the liberation of the city and the October 28 celebrations. Mr. Sasson will lay down a wreath at the Holocaust Monument, in the presence of members of the Jewis h Community, as well as local and foreign officials.

    During his stay in Thessaloniki, Mr. Sasson will meet with Metropolite Panteleimon, Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Giorgos Paschalidis, Secretary General of the Region of Central Macedonia Vassilis Valassopoulos, Prefect Kostas Papadopoulos, Mayor Vassilis

    Papageorgopoulos, European MP Antonis Trakatellis, and the leadership of the European Community. He will also observe the military parade on October 28 as an official guest of the Greek state.

  • [05] "LET'S GET TO WORK" "And now let's get to work", said Deputy Minister of the Interior Mr. S. Benos, aiming at making Public Administration friendlier towards citizens. The first measure announced was the creation of 1.000 citizen's offices. Inaction seems to be more intimid ating to Deputy Minister of Development Mr. D. Georgakopoulos, who called banks to increase their pace and set the lifting of investment obstacles as a first stake. Minister of Transports Christos Verelis, who said a sad farewell to Mr. Voulgaris, stresse d that this is a long-term government with no "honeymoon" period. He also stated that Mr. Pagalos will be missed, while Mr. Pagalos is once more a happy father.

    A promise to "put his back into it" was made by Mr. S. Vougias, who did not hide his anxiety "in not losing an hour in quickly understanding everyday problems which win the battle". He also added that his utilization signals the need to go along with the

    Center and Left Wing.

    From far away in Budapest, Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Papandreou, stated he was optimistic about the course of the new government, which he greeted as "an important decision on behalf of the Prime Minister, who wanted to give the government new dynamics".

  • [06] PAPANDREOU VISIT TO IRAN-PAKISTAN A visit to Iran and Pakistan will be made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Papandreou, who will deliberate with the leadership of both countries.

    It should be noted that the European Union recognizes the important roles of both Pakistan and Iran, on the issue of dealing with international terrorism, a fact evident in the constant visits to those countries by European leaders lately.

    Mr. Papandreou will have a discussion on dealing with international terrorism, as well as the promotion of Greece-Iran bilateral relations, which are at a very point.

    The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs will bring the message of willingness of EU member-states for strengthening relations between the EU and Iran, and the International Community's offer to support Pakistan.

  • [07] 39 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARRESTED 39 Iraqi illegal immigrants were arrested after having entered the country from Turkey, via the Evros river, along with a Bulgarian truck driver who was arrested with two Greek accomplices trying to transfer the Iraqis.
  • [08] ANTIWAR RALLIES An antiwar campaign will take place on Saturday at 6pm in the Kamara Square, organized by the Discussion Area and Joint Action of the Left. On Thursday November 1 at 8pm, it is organizing another event in the worker-employee center of Thessaloniki, the s logan of which is "no to war-need for consolidation-resistance by all Left powers".
  • [09] PAPANDREOU: WE ARE A FIGHTING GROUP Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou, commenting on his new undersecretaries and deputy, stated that his new staff at the Foreign Ministry forms a fighting group and the outcome will be very positive.

    Mr. Papandreou welcomed on board new deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannitsis and new undersecretaries Yiannis Zafiropoulos and Yiannis Magriotis expressing his joy for the cooperation they will have.

    He said that the Foreign Ministry has important priorities such as, the Greek EU presidency and the developments in the Balkans, the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue and the important developments taking place at an international level.

  • [10] MAGRIOTIS WILL BE IN ANTALYA New undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Magriotis will be in Antalya, Turkey today to attend the Organization for the Black Sea Cooperation Summit meeting that will be presided over by Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem.

    The issues under discussion will be international terrorism, on which a joint statement is expected to be adopted, as well as the organization's future after the latest developments and its enlargement.

  • [11] FAYE DUNAWAY IN THESSALONIKI A charming presence that has enchanted millions of moviegoers around the world during her long career in the cinema industry will brighten Thessaloniki's 42nd Film Festival this year. Faye Dunaway will be in Greece on November 8-12.

    She will promote the little known film she starred in "The secret life of a model" (1970) by Jerry Satzberg and her own creation, the short film "Yellow Bird".

    The American movie-star will also take advantage of her visit to Greece to promote her plans for a film based on the life of famous Greek soprano Maria Callas.

  • [12] THE IPEKCI AWARDS CEREMONY ON NOVEMBER 2 Honorary diplomas will be awarded by the Ipekci Awards secretariat on November 2 to the Greek and Turkish citizens, who were distinguished in the two-year period 2000-2001 for their activities in favor of the Greek-Turkish rapprochement.

    The ceremony will take place at the Mela Building in Athens.

  • [13] THREE-FOLD CELEBRATIONS IN THESSALONIKI Minister of Defense Yiannos Papantoniou and Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Giorgos Paschalidis will represent the government in the three-fold celebrations in Thessaloniki, on the occasion of its patron saint feast St. Dimitrios, and the two anniversaries commemorating its liberation from the Turkish yolk and Greece's entry to WWII. Mr. Papantoniou and Mr. Paschalidis will watch the big military parade that will be held in Thessaloniki on Sunday morning in the presence of President Kostis Stephanopoulos.

    Mr. Papantoniou, who took over his new duties yesterday, is expected to arrive in Thessaloniki on Saturday afternoon. In the events that will take place until then, he will be represented by undersecretary of Defense Loukas Apostolidis.

    Minister of Culture Evangelos Venizelos is also expected to arrive in Thessaloniki today. He is scheduled to stay until Sunday to attend the formal celebrations.

    Meanwhile, the Hellenic Bank will host a delegation of Cypriots, who fought in WWII and will participate in the October 28 military parade. They were among the Cypriots, who joined the Greek army to fight alongside the Greeks against the Italian fascists .

  • [14] SIGNIFICANT LOSSES IN THE ASE Significant losses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index dropped to -1.10% at 2.365,10 points, while the volume of transactions was 87.6 million Euro or 29.8 billion drachmas.

    Of the stocks trading today, 69 recorded gains and 258 had losses, while the value of 50 stocks remained unchanged.

  • [15] GOV'T SPOKESMAN: THIS GOVERNMENT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ELECTIONS This government has nothing to do with elections, said new government spokesman and Minister of Press and Mass Media Christos Protopappas, adding that parliamentary elections will take place as scheduled at the end of the full four-year term in March 200 4.

    The government was reshuffled as it was announced by the prime minister and is now called to execute its work in an effective way, a work that has vision and goals, said Mr. Protopappas. He also added that the necessary reforms will be made to safeguard the future of Greece and its people.

  • [16] GREEK AIRSPACE VIOLATIONS The Greek government has taken all necessary measures as a result of the Greek airspace violations by Turkish aircraft, according to government spokesman Christos Protopappas, who added that all necessary diplomatic moves will be made. He also pointed ou t that the Greek government is watching closely every move of the Turkish side. Mr. Protopappas added that the goal is to safeguarding the Greek national interests. He said that Greece wants peace, normality and security in the region and expressed the wish that Turkey will not enter a circle of tension.
  • [17] STATEMENTS BY PROTOPAPPAS ON THE TRANSFER OF AUTHORITY TO UNDERSECRETARIES There is no minister who refuses to give jurisdiction to his undersecretaries, stated government spokesman Christos Protopappas when he was asked by reporters to comment on whether there is a problem of authority transfer from the ministers to undersecre taries.

    On the issues concerning the Olympic Games preparations, he announced that the Prime Minister will meet on Monday with Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos, undersecretaries Tilemachos Hitiris and Nasos Alevras, as well as, 2004 Olympic Games general sec retary Kostas Kartalis.

    The government spokesman added that the ministerial committee will meet with the participation of the responsible ministers, presided over by the Prime Minister. However, in the case the responsible ministers have relinquished authority to undersecretari es then it is obvious that the responsible undersecretaries will be present in the meetings.

  • [18] G. PAPANDREOU ON NEW GOVERNMENT The new dynamics will lead PASOK to the materialization of its works and victory in the coming elections, underlined Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Papandreou, commenting on the new government composition.
  • [19] PAPANDREOU MEETINGS IN BUDAPEST International developments, the broadening of the European Union and Greek-Hungarian relationships, were the focus of discussions that Minister of Foreign Affars Giorgos Papandreou had with the political leadership of Hungary, in Budapest.

    In a discussion Mr. Papandreou had with his Hungarian counterpart, Yannos Martoni, a common opinion was made clear that the new challenges on collective security that have been created by the threat of terrorism since September 11, must not become an obs tacle in the broadening of the European Union.

    "We have a close cooperation, and today we decided to strengthen it, in order to help the stabilization of the Balkans and the European perspective", stated Mr. Papandreou after the meeting.

    Mr. Papandreou completed his visit to Budapest with a meeting he had with the President of the Hungarian Socialist Party, which is in the opposition, Laslo Kovach.

  • [20] BARTHOLOMEW 10-YEAR PATRIARCHY CELEBRATION In a splendid ceremony that took place on Monday in the Archbishopric of America Cultural Center, the 10 years since Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was elected were celebrated.

    In his greeting speech, Consul General of Greece in New York Dimitris Platis, sent the complete solidarity, support and help of the Greek government

  • [21] THE STABILITY PACT CONFERENCE IN BUCHAREST The Stability Pact 2nd Regional Conference opens in Bucharest tomorrow co-organized by the European Commission, the World Bank, the Stability Pact special coordinator Bodo Hobach and the Romanian authorities.

    In the conference will participate a Greek delegation made up by Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Finance officials, headed by Foreign Ministry European Affairs director Ilias Plaskovitis.

    The goal of the conference is to confirm the political commitment of the countries in the region on the adoption of reforms and the strengthening of regional cooperation as well as, the international community's commitment to back this procedure. Also, t he community of donors will agree on the strategies and the Stability Pact regions that are regarded as top priority.

    There will also be a discussion on the regional economic issues, the development of regional structure and trade, the growth of the private sector, as well as, democratization, human rights and security issues.

  • [22] GREEK-SERB CONSORTIUM The issue of the creation of a Greek-Serb consortium for the construction of the "journalists' village" in the municipality of Amarousion in Athens in view of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, was discussed in Belgrade during the visit of a Greek delegat ion, according to the Yugoslav news agency "Tanjug".

    The Greek delegation, headed by Amarousion mayor Panagiotis Tanikos met with the Prime Minister of Serbia and the Ministers of Culture and Environment.

    Almost 80% of the activities within the framework of the imminent Olympiad in Athens will take place in the region of Amarousion, while the investments made will exceed US$300 million.
