  • [07] GREEK POLITICIANS ON IRAQ "Whomever supports that a people, such as that of Iraq, is a danger to other peoples because it possesses weapons of mass destruction, must first secure a unanimous decision from the UN Security Council. This is the only justified and legal action. Nobod y else has the authority to make that decision, because they will also be held responsible for the results". This was stressed among other things by Minister of Development Akis Tsochatzopoulos, during his speech at the annual ball of PASOK's Thessaloniki

    Prefecture Committee.

Meanwhile, optimism on the possibility of avoiding a war in Iraq was expressed by the President of the Parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis. "The war can certainly be avoided. Because after the report of the UN inspectors that there are no weapons of mass de struction, I believe that the side against the war is growing stronger, even in the United States - there are reactions in the masses, apart from intellectuals and politicians - as well as in Europe", said Mr. Kaklamanis.

"I believe that at the Security Council there will be voices, especially those of the major powers, which will express their opposition to a war, a war that will first and foremost hurt our region and Europe, as well as global economy, and cause a furthe r accumulation of casualties and destruction in a region where people are already facing many problems and difficulties due to the dictatorial regimes there".

  • [08] GIOTOPOULOS REFUTES MICHALOPOULOS-PAPANASTASIOU TO TESTIFY Suspected leader of "November 17" Alexandros Giotopoulos issued a statement to the press, in which he refuted ever having met Grigoris Michalopoulos, while he did not miss the opportunity present judicial authorities with several ironic comments, proceed ing to provocatively questioning whether a just trial will be carried out. At the same time, Savvas Xeros adopted the same tactics in another interview, while he appeared very sensitive when people connected "N17" activity to the extreme right.

Alexandros Giotopoulos' statement is as follows:

"I do not know Mr. Michalopoulos, never have I met him, never have I visited him, nor have I bought any of his books.

I am surprised I have not been charged with blackmail, after his statement that I visited him, since similar statements of fellow suspects, that they met with me in a tavern, are considered evidence that I am the leader of "N17".

It is only natural, that independent justice, being preoccupied with preparations for a fair trial, does not have the time, although it does possess the will, to deal with the work of an extremely honest publisher and patriot."

Meanwhile, the latest suspect in the "N17" case, Anestis Papanastasiou, will be taken to Special Examiner Leonidas Zervobeakos this afternoon. The 42-year-old bank employee from Thessaloniki, is expected to testify by memorandum, as he has been charged w ith participating in the organization.
