NEWS IN DETAIL[01] MEETING ON THE S-300 MISSILESAthens 26 August (MPA)Prime minister Kostas Simitis met with the leadership of the ministries of foreign affairs and defense in Athens today in view of tomorrow’s visit to the Greek capital by Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides and the talks he will have with Mr. Simitis. Their meeting will focus on the issue of the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missiles as there is information on possible postponement of their installation in Cyprus. Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas underlined that the joint defense doctrine between Greece and Cyprus is still in effect.[02] POLITICAL DISPUTE OVER THE SALE OF THE IONIAN BANKAthens 26 August (MPA)The issue of the sale of the Ionian Bank sparked a political dispute between the government and the opposition parties. All the parties of the opposition speak about a government failure and blame the government for the way it handled the whole issue. The next bidding will be held in a period of three months and on behalf of the government efforts are being made to secure the pre-conditions for a successful outcome. The likelihood to dissociate the bank’s sale price from its stock market value is under discussion.[03] THE BULGARIAN PRIME MINISTER IS ON A VISIT TO ATHENSAthens 26 August (MPA)Bulgarian prime minister Ivan Kostov is on a visit to Athens and is scheduled to meet with Mr. Kostas Simitis for talks on bilateral issues and the current developments in the wider Balkan region. In statements he made to the Bulgarian state radio, Mr. Kostov characterized Greece as the “door” that will lead Bulgaria to the European Union and NATO.[04] A GREEK OIL TANKER RAN AGROUND IN BOSPORUSIstanbul 26 August (MPA)A Greek oil tanker ran aground in Bosporus Straits last evening, according to Turkish Coast Guard officials, who clarified that there is no oil leak in the sea.According to the Turkish authorities, the oil tanker “Crudewolf”, which is carrying 140 thousand tons of crude oil and had departed from the Black Sea port of Novorosisk with final destination a Italian port, ran aground as it was entering the sea region of Marmara. The Turkish authorities asked for the permission of the ship owners in order to start procedures for its removal. [05] GATHERING OF 100 YOUNG ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS FROM 18 COUNTRIESAlexandroupolis 26 August (MPA)Over 100 young Orthodox Christians from 18 countries have gathered at the village of Makri in Evros, north-eastern Greece to participate in a meeting under the title “Young clerics: Relations of trust or controversy” which opened on August 24 and will last until August 30. The meeting takes place within the framework of the events held by the “Association” of the World Confederation of Young Orthodox Christians scheduled for 1998.The effort aims at offering the opportunity for better communication to young people coming from different Orthodox Christian background, through conferences, discussions, work groups, social and sports activities. [06] GREEKS AND ITALIANS SAY “YES” TO THE “EURO” WHILE GERMANS AND BRITISH VOTE “NO”Thessaloniki 26 August (MPA)The results of an opinion poll in different European Union countries showed that the Greeks, the Italians and the people of Luxembourg welcome the “Euro”.Specifically, 74% of the Italians questioned appear to have overcome their reservations over the establishment of a single European currency and now they occupy the first place regarding “Euro” acceptance, followed by the people of Luxembourg with 67%, while the Greeks are at third place with 65%. The Germans see the prospect of the single currency with skepticism and 68% of those questioned gave a negative response. The same attitude is observed in Britain where 74% say “No” to “Euro” and only 26% has a positive view on the issue. [07] THE MEETING ON THE S-300 HAS ENDEDAthens 26 August (MPA)The meeting of prime minister Kostas Simitis in Athens with foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos and minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos has ended and no statements were made to reporters.According to information, in the meeting was examined the situation that has been formed over the installation of the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missiles in Cyprus in view of tomorrow’s talks with Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides who will be on a visit to Athens. [08] THE GREEK TELECOMMUNICATIONS ORGANIZATION ENTERED THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS MARKET IN JORDANAmman 26 August (MPA)The Greek Telecommunications Organization (OTE) entered the Middle East market with its participation in the installation and operation of public card-phones in Jordan.OTE’s successful participation in the Jordanian telecommunications market is being safeguarded thanks to its ties with the “Trans Jordan for Communications Services LTD” (TICS) as it is one of the company’s shareholders. TICS is one of the two companies active in the field of card-phones operation in Jordan and controls 75-80% of the local market.
