    Greece decided to suspend its participation in the NATO exercise, code-named "Destined Glory 2000", when Turkish F16 aircraft harassed Greek A7 Corsair bombers again today within the framework of the specific exercise.

    Two A7 Corsair fighter-bombers were about to participate in a mission at the Xiros Bay this morning but while flying over Agios Efstratios and entering the Turkish airspace were identified and were accompanied by Turkish F16. The two A7 executed their mission and returned to their base in Araxos.

    Turkey with an informal protest to NATO announced that the Greek aircraft are being regarded as hostile when they are in Turkish airspace.

    Minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who is in Cyprus, briefed prime minister Kostas Simitis immediately and called NATO to interrupt the exercise clarifying that in a different case Greece will withdraw from "Destined Glory". Mr. Tsochatzopoulos contacted the Greek political leaders and presented to them the situation that has been created regarding the NATO exercise and the moves that were made by the Greek government.

    The Greek National Defense General Staff chief has asked the allied forces commander to take immediate measures for the interruption of the exercise which has lost its legality, stated Mr. Tsochatzopoulos.

    The minister of defense stated that Greece expects answers from the NATO leadership, which has asked for time to study the issue and give an answer in the next few hours, adding that Greece is ready to demand the only logical consequence of the Turkish behavior namely, the interruption of the NATO exercise.

    [02] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH VARTHOLOMEOS MET WITH THE PRIME MINISTER

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos and prime minister Kostas Simitis had a warm half-hour meeting yesterday evening. The prime minister underlined the close cooperation the Greek government must have with the Fanar and pointed out that Mr. Vartholomeos is the leader of the Orthodox Church which has a very significant role to play under his leadership.

    The Ecumenical Patriarch also had meetings with right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis and Coalition of the Left leader Nikos Konstantopoulos, while he will visit the Metropolis of Megara, Patras and Theva.

    [03] A RARE SMALL ICON OF ST. DIMITRIOS ARRIVED IN THESSALONIKI FROM NEW YORK

    Thessaloniki, 21 October 2000 (18:21 UTC+2)

    A rare small icon of St. Dimitrios, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, which is made of ivory and belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of New York will be hosted for three months at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki within the framework of the exhibition under the title "From Iconoclasm to the glory of the Macedons and the Komnini".

    The icon was made in the second half of the 10th century and its presentation in the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki is placed within the framework of its cooperation with foreign museums.

    [04] PAPANDREOU WILL VISIT THE UNITED STATES

    Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou will have contacts with representatives of the Greek-American community in the United States starting tomorrow until October 28. On Saturday, October 22, Mr. Papandreou will speak in the annual UHAC event in Chicago and he will be honored for his contribution in the efforts for peace in the Balkans.

    On October 24, he will visit the Vrionis Center and will attend the reception that will be given in San Francisco by Alex Spanos. In the event will also be present distinguished Greek-Americans and local politicians from the state of California. Mr. Papandreou will also have a meeting with the state governor.

    On October 26, Mr. Papandreou will visit Salt Lake City where he will meet with the Winter Olympics Organizing Committee president for the promotion of the Olympic Truce.

    Mr Papandreou will be accompanied by general secretary for the Greeks living abroad Dimitris Dollis.

    [05] GREECE THREATENS TO WITHDRAW FROM THE NATO EXERCISE

    A new problem appeared in the NATO exercise "Destined Glory" that is being held in Turkey, when Ankara barred the Greek fighter jets from entering the Turkish airspace.

    Greek National Defense General Staff chief Manousos Paragioudakis contacted the NATO deputy commander and requested the exercise to be interrupted or Greece will withdraw from it.

    NATO stated that in the next few hours an explanation will be given on the issue that has been created.

    [06] THE 1ST FESTIVAL OF THE BEST EUROPEAN TV PROGRAMS IS UNDERWAY IN THESSALONIKI

    The 1st Festival of the best European Television programs of the year is underway in Thessaloniki, with the screening of TV documentaries from Poland, Switzerland, Sweden and Yugoslavia.

    There will also be screenings of information-programs news bulletins from the United Kingdom, Poland and Yugoslavia.

    The Festival will be completed tomorrow and it is organized by the Greek television station ET3 in cooperation with Thessaloniki's Cinema Festival and the Pan-European Association of Regional Television Stations, CIRCOM Regional.

    [07] REPPAS: AUTONOMOUS KOSOVO WITHIN YUGOSLAVIA

    Greek minister of press and government spokesman Dimitris Reppas called to comment on the Albanian mass media reports over an "Athens-Belgrade" axis stated that Greece is firm in its position concerning the creation of an autonomous Kosovo within the borders of Yugoslavia and does not want any change of status in the Balkans.

    Mr. Reppas made it clear that the Greek government wants the cooperation of all neighboring states and will seek the promotion of its policy in the Balkan leaders meeting that will be held in Skopje next Wednesday. Specifically, on the ethnic Greek minority in south Albania, the Greek government spokesman reiterated that Greece does not want any change in the existing borders and seeks harmonious co-existence with the Balkans states.

    [08] NEW SCENARIO ON THE 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES

    The scenarios concerning the likelihood of the 2004 Olympic Games to be taken away form Athens surfaced again yesterday as a result of an interview to the Associated Press news agency by Canadian Dick Pound, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee, IOC, and a candidate for its presidency.

    He stressed that the following weeks and months will be a crucial period, pointing out that Athens has lost valuable time and in order to succeed it must be 110% effective.

    [09] THE EXERCISE NIKIFOROS-TOXOTIS HAS BEEN COMPLETED

    The Greek-Cypriot joint military exercise, code-named "Nikiforos-Toxotis", was completed successfully in Cyprus.

    Greek minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos stated that the joint military exercises strengthen the common national strategy of the Joint Defense Doctrine.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos will inaugurate the Air Force Base in Paphos tomorrow.
