  • [01] NEW DISCUSSIONS ON CYPRUS

    Nicosia, 10 August 2001 (15:34 UTC+2)

A new round of discussions on the Cyprus issue will commence on the 4th or 6th of September in New York. This information was given from governmental sources in Nicosia and is a result of the discussions that have taken place in the past few days. According to the same sources, the discussions swill last for about 10 days and the submittal of unofficial documents will continue.

The two sides are expected to turn in documents on all the issues. Meanwhile, the representative of the Cypriot Government, Mr. M. Papapetrou stated yesterday that the Greekcypriot side is prepared to participate constructively in the discussion procedures, seeing them as a new opportunity to find a solution to the issue.

The President of the Cypriot Republic stated that Mr. Papapetrou is ready to partake in the discussions with flexibility and reasonableness, but he stressed, that no one should expect any kind of forfeiting on anything concerning the framework and form of the solution or the human rights issue. He also made clear that with this statement he is sending a message to R. Denktash, drawing on his latest statements, as well as in all other directions.

Commenting on the statement of the American Ambassador in Nicosia, that both sides need to attend with an open mind, the President stated that if one of the sides attends in a different frame of mind, the discussions should be terminated

[02] CONFLICT BETWEEN THE TWO MAJOR PARTIES

    Athens, 10 August 2001 (15:34 UTC+2)

After yesterday's meeting in the central offices of New Democracy, a full scale assault began on the matter of PASOK's hiring in the public sector. Mr. Soufias, who presided over the meeting stated, "We are not going to let the known governmental practices, that have dominated in many sectors of our country's public life with discriminations and differentiation in one direction continue."

New Democracy's parliamentary representative, P. Pavlopoulos charged PASOK with pretending to be modernizing while not doing so and tampering with evidence on employment and choosing where to give jobs, while calling it social policy.

The coordinator of the Standing Committee of Public Administration, Public Order and Justice for New Democracy, announced the creation of a team which will monitor all hiring in the district. He called the government not to confuse hiring with social policy and stated that the opposition wanted a body that will guarantee objective hiring and not a mere spectator.

Responses have come from the Under-secretary of Press, Mr. Tilemahos Hytiris, who stated that the department heads of ND are nostalgic of the past, and of the hiring policy practiced by the Right Wing while it was in government, and who in fact coined the term "our boys".

A further direct attack came from the PASOK secretary, Mr. Skandalidis, on the further demand of New Democracy for early elections. "This vision seems more like a midsummer night's dream and one should not forget the temperature is 40 C. I think that New Democracy will have to wait for at least two more summers and three more winters for elections, because that is how long it will take to complete our task. And they still should not be in such a hurry, since it is the people who will decide, after all."
