  • [01] P. PAVLOPOULOS: NEW DEMOCRACY READY TO GOVERN

    New Democracy is ready to govern and elections are a "clean solution", stated the parliamentary spokesperson Prokopis Pavlopoulos, in an interview with the "Typos tis Kyriakis" newspaper.

    Mr. Pavlopoulos expressed the appreciation that PASOK cannot recover under today's circumstances, does not exclude the possibility of elections and attacks the governing party characterizing it as, "a loose confederation of staff members, a political limited liability company".

    He calls Stefanos Manos and Dimitris Avramopoulos to return to New Democracy and to the question of whether Giorgos Papandreou may be the next president of PASOK he answered: "Let them do whatever they think appropriate. However, I don't understand how a politician that either got little credit or failed miserably in all his past posts can become a successful leader of PASOK".

    [02] MEETINGS BEGIN TOMORROW FOR MR. KARAMANLIS

    An end to the summer sluggishness for the main opposition party is being given by the President of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis, who is returning today from his holidays. Tomorrow he will call a meeting with his associates and will discuss the program and content of his visit to Thessaloniki for the 66th TIF (15th, 16th September), as well as the Autumn attack on the government. On Tuesday Mr. Karamnalis will meet with the administration of the Industries' Association of Northern Greece who will present its positions and propositions on the economy and development of the country.

    [03] GEORGIEFSKI-PAPANDREOU MEETING

    Foreign Secretary, Giorgos Ppandreou, met yesterday in Elounta with the Prime Minister of FYROM, Liouptso Georgiefski, who visited his family which is on holiday in Krete.

    During their meeting they discussed the situation in FYROM and the course of the two countries' relationship. In statements of his Mr. Papandreou was optimistic on the situation in FYROM, and stressed that the situation in the neighboring country is definitely better, without having overcome the danger, but an new dynamic exists.

    The Minister mentioned that their is regular communication with the leaders of FYROM, as our country has a very important role in the attempt for the restructuring of FYROM.

    [04] PASCHALIDIS - PAPAGEORGOPOULOS MEETING TOMORROW

    Thessaloniki, 19 August 2001 (19:30 UTC+2)

    The Minister of Macedonia-Thrace, Giorgos Pashcalidis will meet tomorrow at 13:30 with the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Vasilis Papageorgopoulos. Their discussions will be mainly on the works and the priorities of Thessaloniki in view of the Prime Minster's visit, while the matter of the conference the Mayor has called on the 30th of August, and the imminent rally at that time is also expected to be discussed.

    At 12 noon the Minister will meet with the Prefect of Thessaloniki, Kostas Papadopoulos, afterwards he will meet with the two secretaries of the Prefecture Committees of PASOK, Kostas Mamelis and Stathis Pantelidis, while at 8 pm at the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace the Coordination Committee of the Macedonia and Thrace Districts will hold a meeting.

    [05] PRIME MINISTERS SCHEDULE

    The Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will meet tomorrow with the secretary of PASOK's Central Committee, Kostas Skandalidis, in view of the Central Committee's session on the 31st of August.

    On Tuesday Mr. Simitis will meet with a the Industries' Association of Northern Greece and on Wednesday he will contact the economic staff in relation to the budget.

    On Thursday the Cabinet will hold a meeting, while at the end of the week the Prime Minister will tour in Argostoli.

    [06] CHRISTODOULAKIS: BLANK VOTE AT THE CONGRESS CONSTITUTES POLITICAL COWARDICE

    Minister of Development, Nikos Christodoulakis characterized a blank vote sheet at the PASOK congress as political cowardice. Referring to the possibility of many blank votes being cast at the congress, he stressed: "The blank protest is a final rejection of Simitis". He found incomprehensible that some staff members may say: "Simitis is no good for us, but we take no responsibility for who will lead the party".

    Mr. Christodoulakis supported that structural changes are "the only recipe for social prosperity". He expressed fears that some in the EU will want to cut the funding to Greece from the 3rd Municipal Support Framework, through the process of long and exaggerated inspection procedures, but we "will be ready to put up a fight".

    In an interview with the "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia", the Minister of Development expressed his wish that Greece does not decline to the wizards of neoliberalism, as it occurred in the 1990-1993 period, because then "the fear for loss of funding will be confirmed". He admits that today in Europe there is no single credible prosperity strategy and he proposes a triple target for Greece, occupation, education, and culture and the twin policy of "development and social justice".

    Answering accusations from his colleagues that the economic policy has a scent of neoliberalism he pointed out: "I hope that no Greek has the opportunity to see what was attempted during the Mitsotakis period in Greece".

    He stressed that the insurance plan the government lodged was the best comparatively with what was adopted in other European countries, but he underlined that "what has happened, has happened".

    [07] IRINEOS: GREECES INTERESTS ABOVE ALL

    The new Patriarch of Jerusalem has promised to keep his old "adversaries" in the elections for the Patriarchy, in the same positions, if they wish to keep those positions.

    In an interview with the "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia" newspaper, Irineos unravels and exhibits his plans, his aims and aspirations as the head of the Church in one of the most sensitive corners of the world, that of the Middle East.

    To a question concerning the relationship between the Patriarchy and the Greek Government, he stated: "We put the interests of the Brotherhood and of Greece above all else." He did not deny his excellent relations with Archbishop Christodoulos, but stressed that "in his location, he and the other brothers feel like they are in a pioneer outpost of Greece..." and he stated that he will cooperate closely with Greece.

    The greatest problem of the Patriarchy, to which priority will be given, is the manning with new capable clerics - guards for the Sacrosanct Grave. "We will try to attract as many clerics as possible. But that is not enough. Thus, we believe that we must recreate a of society Greeks living abroad here. Because I believe that wherever Hellinism is lost, the church withers".

    [08] G. PAPANDREOU: NEW DYNAMICS IN FYROM

    The Foreign Secretary, G. Papandreou, stated he was optimistic on the developments in FYROM.

    From Crete, where he is, he stated that the situation today is definitely better in FYROM, without of course danger being completely overcome, but there are new dynamics.

    Greece is following the developments closely and guarantees stability in the area, he added.

    "We have regular communications with all the leaders in FYROM, because we are playing an important role in the attempt not only of stabilization, but that of restructuring of the country. Because Greece is the main investor. We will be the ones on whom they will depend for their future development", he stated.

    [09] EXAMINATION RESULTS

    Thessaloniki, 19 August 2001 (19:08 UTC+2)

    By the middle of the coming week the Ministry of Education is expected to announce the grades needed for acceptance in the various universities, for students that took the exam with the old "desmes" system.

    The results for the graduates of the Unified High School system, are expected to be announced in the beginning of next month, at the same time, on the 4th of September, the revision exams for students that failed to pass the school year will take place.

    [10] KAKLAMANIS SPEECH AT 13TH INTERNATIONAL GREEK PHILOSOPHY CONFERENCE

    "The politician should and can speak only in the name of truth, sound thinking and the consistency of principles and not personal satisfaction, flattering crowds, with ulterior motives, those of pacts and collective myths.

    Can the politician have authority obeying the principal of responsibility and the common logic of political cost, that changes politics from a sovereign office to a profession? In other words, can the politician overcome the contradiction that comes from the fact that he is not called upon only to represent himself, but the voters that elected him? Must the politician prefer to become unpleasant and useful or pleasant and dangerous?"

    These and other important questions were underlined by Apostolos Kaklamanis, President of Parliament, as the main speaker yesterday afternoon at the official commencing of the 13th International Greek Philosophy Conference, which is taking place in Rhodes and will continue until the 25th of August.

    The conference, which is dedicated to the great, 5th Century BC, Athenian philosopher, Socrates, the topic of which is "The Philosophy of Communication", is organized by the International Greek Philosophy Association, the International Greek Philosophy and Culture Center, the Philosophy Department of the Athens University and is shielded by the President of the Republic
