  • [01] ANTHRAX SCARE FROM US CITIZEN IN ATHENS

    The test results the 65-year-old American woman who went to the "Tzanio" hospital last night claiming to have symptoms of the lethal anthrax virus, are so far negative. The woman was in the US for over a month and returned to Greece last Friday. On night of her arrival, she exhibited a high fever and herpes on her mouth.

    The doctors are still investigating the incident, because, as they say, if the woman was infected by the disease two or three days earlier, the infection may not yet have moved to the lungs. Also, the results of her cultivation from a sample of the herpes tissue taken from the 65-year-old's mouth.

    [02] A. GUEVARA: «BIN LADEN IS NOT A REVOLUTIONARY»

    Bin Laden is not a revolutionary, he is a terrorist, something manufactured, stated the daughter of the Argentinean revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, the man who was, and 34 years after his death, still is a symbol.

    Aleida Guevara, a Cuban citizen living in Havana, was in Thessaloniki in the Framework of the European Conference for Ties of Friendship and Solidarity with Cuba. Speaking to the press she mentioned her father's struggles and goals, the present situation and the future of Cuba, as well as the loving relationship between the Greek people and Che.

    [03] EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES MUST REMAIN UNIFIED

    Greeting the 6th PASOK congress, Mary Honeyball, member of the European Parliament and spokesperson of the British Labor Party, stressed the need for European Union member countries to remain unified during this difficult juncture. She underlined that the Eropean Union is fighting against terrorism and this struggle is supported by PASOK and all Left wing parties of the European Union.

    Mr. Regis Passerieux, Secretary of International Affairs of the French Socialist Party, pointed out in his greeting speech, that progressive European powers must cooperate to establish a new political program for the organization of the world anew, which will regulate economy, remove poorer countries' debts and resolve conflicts in all regions of the planet. We must also pursue, through a politicized Europe, a more just and organized world.

    [04] AFGHAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN KOS

    4 Afghan illegal immigrants were caught in Kos during the early morning hours by the coast guard authorities of the island. The illegal immigrants were on an inflatable row boat, one "Discovery 400". The Afghans are being held at the Coast Guard in Kos and will be taken to the district attorney.

    [05] V. PAPANDREOU: PASOK IS THE WINNER OF THE CONGRESS

    "The winner of the congress is PASOK. We will all move together for a more effective solution of the problems of Greek society", stated Minister of the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization Vaso Papandreou, just after exiting from the voting department. When asked if Akis Tsohatzopoulos contributed to the unity in PASOK with his position yesterday, Mrs. Papandreou pointed out: "Akis Tsohatzopoulos and all the members of PASOK contributed so that we could move on with a much stronger, unified and open to society PASOK."

    [06] CONFERENCE OF LIBRARY DIRECTORS IN THESSALONIKI

    150 library directors from Europe, the US, Canada and Africa will be in Thessaloniki from tomorrow until Thursday, in order to participate in the World Association of Aleph Users.

    Aleph is the mostly widely used software for automated library systems.

    [07] SIMITIS: UNITY IS THE MESSAGE OF THE CONGRESS

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis arrived at the Olympic Stadium at 12:30pm and voted for the election of the President and the members of PASOK's Central Committee. In statements to the press he pointed out that the PASOK congress is taking place at a point in time when international developments throw a heavy shadow over our country, and he underlined: "This demands that we have unity, so that we can give answers and control situations, said Mr. Simitis. The PASOK congress gave just that message: Unity to strengthen our country's international position, for stability in our economy, for high growth rates, most of all for the existence of a strong society of cohesion and solidarity. This is the gain for PASOK, but also I believe for Greek society and for the Greek people.

    [08] PAPATHEMELIS PROTESTS

    The option of abstention from the electoral procedures for the reelection of Kostas Simitis and the appointment of the members of PASOK's Central Committee, was chosen by PASOK's MP in the 1st Electoral District of Thessaloniki, Kostas Papathemelis, in show of protest.

    In a statement he mentions: "My contribution to PASOK and my care for the future of the Democratic Front lead me to abstain from electoral procedures. My abstention is a message of protest." Mr. Papathemelis continued to say that the ideals of socialism had been replaced values that belong to neoliberalism. "Human relationships have been wounded, relationships of comradeship, solidarity and mutual trust, and are inclined to be replaced by transactions."

    [09] PASOK CENTRAL COMMITTEE RESULTS ON THE NET

    More than 3200 users of the Internet visited the new PASOK hub yesterday, which was the third day of the PASOK congress.

    The most popular site is the live broadcast of the congress works, which had 1030hits, while the site with saved speeches had 300 hits. The sites dedicated to the 6th congress had more than 1500 hits, while the online vote site had 519 hits.

    70% of the hits were from inside Greece, the rest was from abroad, with 20% from the US.

    Today, during the counting of the votes for the new Central Committee, the results will be hosted on the first site of the PASOK hub.

    The PASOK portal is also hosted in English, where, already, there are speeches of the 6th Congress.

    [10] PAGALOS ON TSOHATZOPOULOS

    Akis Tsohatzopoulos' statement was characterized as the quintessence of every political congress by Theodoros Pagalos, in statements to the press: "We discuss, state our opinions, our opposing views and differences are evident and we compose them, said Mr. Paggalos. Akis Tsohatzopoulos contributed greatly to that composition and has everyone's gratitude".

    On whether he will be in the government which will take shape after the reformation, he said he would be in a position to answer that question two weeks from Monday.
