  • [01] SINGLE EUROPEAN ARREST WARRANT ADOPTED BY THE "15"

    Brussels, 17 November 2001 (18:44 UTC+2)

The establishment of a single European arrest warrant speeding-up the extradition procedures for suspects of terrorism was decided in principle in Brussels yesterday by the Justice Ministers of the "15".

According to the agreement, the suspects will be extradited within 60 days of the request or in 10 days in case there is an agreement by the suspect.

There are 28 offenses that justify the issuing of a European Arrest Warrant among them, terrorism, trafficking of prostitutes, corruption, fraud, laundering of crime products, premeditated murder, and trafficking of illegal immigrants.

[02] RUGOVA: I WILL WIN THE MAJORITY ΙΝ THE ELECTIONS

    Pristina, 17 November 2001 (18:10 UTC+2)

The polls closed in Kosovo this afternoon, while there is a likelihood for the polls in the cities of Jilad, Ferjai and Mitrovica to close later because they opened late as certain political parties' representatives had raised the Albanian flag outside the polling stations. International representatives intervened and voting began after the Albanian flags were removed and were replaced with UN and OSCE flags.

Kosovo Democratic Alliance president Ibrahim Rugova stated to MPA today that he is optimistic his party will win a considerable majority of the votes to be represented independently in the new Parliament and be able to materialize all the pre-election promises.

[03] MAGRIOTIS' SPEECH IN THE 3RD SAE-EUROPE YOUTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY

    Thessaloniki, 17 November 2001 (19:27 UTC+2)

Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Magriotis in his speech in the 3rd SAE-Europe Youth General Assembly, that takes place in Thessaloniki today and tomorrow, underlined that the Greek state offers tangible support and assistance to the young Greeks of the Diaspora.

Mr. Magriotis stressed that the state's support began in 1983 with the creation of the Foreign Ministry general secretariat for Greeks living abroad and culminated with the constitutional establishment of the World Council for Hellenes Living Abroad, SAE, in the spring of 2001.

He also pointed out the special role the young Greeks living abroad are being called to play at the time of European integration and globalization.

Mr. Magriotis made a special reference to the 2004 Olympic Games by saying that it is a vehicle of intercommunication and awakening for global Hellenism and underlined the significant contribution of the Greek communities abroad to the common effort through the creation of the Greeks Living Abroad Network of Volunteers.

[04] MAGRIOTIS WILL VISIT BACU AND ISTANBUL

    Athens, 17 November 2001 (17:50 UTC+2)

Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Magriotis will be on a two-day working visit to Bacu on Sunday before visiting Istanbul.

Mr. Magriotis will meet with Azeri government and state officials. In the meetings will be examined bilateral political, economic and educational issues, the Greek humanitarian aid, the Azerbaijan-EU relations and developments in Afghanistan.

During his visit to Bacu, Mr. Magriotis will inaugurate the Greek embassy building and the new building housing the Greek community in the city, while he will also visit the Slav university where a modern Greek language department was established recently.

Mr. Magriotis is scheduled to visit Istanbul next Wednesday and will be received by the Ecumenical Patriarch.

[05] THE EVENTS ON THE OCCASION OF THE POLYTECHNIC UPRISING END TODAY

    Thessaloniki, 17 November 2001 (17:36 UTC+2)

The celebrations commemorating the 28th anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic uprising culminate in Athens and Thessaloniki today with massive marches to the US embassy and Consulate respectively.

The events opened in Thessaloniki yesterday with wreath laying ceremonies by representatives of political parties, labor unions and plain citizens. The government was represented in Thessaloniki by Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Giorgos Paschalidis.

Messages of unity were issued by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and the leaders of the opposition, while a moment of silence was observed in Parliament in a special ceremony with speeches delivered by government and political parties' representatives.
