  • [01] KARAMNLIS ATTACKS GOVERNMENT ON AGRICULTURE ISSUES

    Athens, 25 November 2001 (19:09 UTC+2)

Énstead of the government taking responsibility for the farmers' problems, it is insulting everyone else and acting like Pontius Pilot, stated the President of New Democracy, Kostas Karamanlis, who visited a farming region outside Egio, and talked with the farmers about their problems.

Immediately afterwards, Mr. Karamanlis made this statement:

"It is obvious that Greek farmers are in despair. There are not just problems in the production of cotton and tabacco, but in oil and citrus fruits.

While Greek farmers watch their income diminish constantly and their products being displaced from the markets, the government is insulting everyone else and acting like Pontius Pilot, instead of taking responsibility.

They have been in power for twenty years, and they are still looking for alibis, placing responsibility elsewhere. By tampering with the truth they are trying to justify what is unjustifiable: That is, their incompetence to defend the interests of Greek farmers and their indifference to the farming world. Indifference which is clearly evident when the Prime Minister says that there is no future in the farming sector. And when the Minister of Agriculture moves to unheard of and unacceptable statements, supporting that farmers will have to deal with the situation by themselves.

Greek farmers know well, by now, that they have nothing to expect from the Simitis government. That a new policy is needed.

A government which will fight for their products.

A government which will defend their interests.

A government which will defend the interest of all Greeks".

The President of New Democracy was accompanied by MP's of the Achaia Prefect, N. Nikolopoulos and Sp. Spiliotopoulos.
