[01] PROTOPAPAS: NEW NAMES ON PASOK'S TICKET NECESSARY FOR ELECTION SUCCESSAthens, 25 August 2003 (12:01 UTC+2)The new election law will be approved by the present Parliament and the government is ready to withdraw certain of the proposals it has presented on the amendment of the election law. It is also ready to accept other proposals on the condition that they promote the modernization of the political system. The above were stressed by Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas in an interview with the Athens newspaper Ethnos. He points out that in order to reverse the climate in favor of the governing Socialist Party of PASOK changes and reforms are necessary at every level and called on the leading party members to place the interest of the party and the country above personal strategy. Mr. Protopapas stated that PASOK's ticket needs refreshment through new candidates, stressing that this is necessary for election success. [02] GUSINSKY WAS LED TO KORIDALLOS PRISONAthens, 25 August 2003 (14:42 UTC+2)Russian businessman Vladimir Gusinsky appeared before an Athens prosecutor today guarded by a strong police force. Gusinsky was arrested at Athens' "Eleftherios Venizelos" International Airport late last week. It was decided to be detained until the responsible judicial authorities conclude whether he will be extradited to Russia. Gusinsky was arrested on charges of fraud involving US$ 250 million. [03] AIRPLANE CRASH IN THE ISLAND OF LESVOSAthens, 25 August 2003 (17:50 UTC+2)A single-engine fire fighting aircraft crashed in the region of Kalloni in the northeastern Aegean island of Lesvos, according to unconfirmed information. According to the information available, the aircraft was participating in efforts to put out a forest fire that broke out last night during a thunderstorm. [04] LOSSES IN THE ASEAthens, 25 August 2003 (17:03 UTC+2)Losses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index dropped to -0.77% at 2.292,8 points, while the volume of transactions was at 195.3 million euros. Of the stocks trading today, 89 recorded gains and 249 had losses, while the value of 43 stocks remained unchanged. It is a dead end tactic even for the Turkish Cypriots themselves sweeping along Turkey to a course that is in conflict with its wish to enter the European Union, stressed Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas. The comment was made in response to a question concerning 50 thousand police-issued identity cards to settlers. Mr. Protopapas reiterated that the Anan Plan constitutes a basis for dialogue for Athens always within the UN framework. [06] THE GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN ON THE ARREST OF A RUSSIAN TYCOONAthens, 25 August 2003 (16:00 UTC+2)The arrest of Russian tycoon Vladimir Gusinsky by the Greek police was made on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the Russian authorities and within the framework of a bilateral Greek-Russian agreement, stated Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas. Responding to the question if the Russian tycoon will be extradited, Mr. Protopapas stated that this is a decision that will be made by the justice authorities. [07] US: GREECE IS THE 10TH MOST FAVORITE HOLIDAY DESTINATIONAthens, 25 August 2003 (15:49 UTC+2)Greece is four places higher this year on the list with the most favorite holiday destinations for the US tourists occupying the 10th place as opposed to the period 2001-2002 when it was at the 14th place. The figures were published on The Wall Street Journal, according to a statement issued by the Greek Tourist Organization, EOT, today. Greece occupies a higher place than Switzerland and Spain, which means that Greece's picture as a tourist destination has improved in the eyes of the US tourists. The top place, as the most favorite tourist destination for US tourists, is occupied by Australia, followed by Britain, Italy and France. [08] MESSAGE OF PEACE BY THE YOUNG CRETANS LIVING ABROADChania, 25 August 2003 (14:11 UTC+2)A message of peace was sent by the young Cretans, representatives and members of Cretan associations in Greece and abroad, participating in the World Conference of Cretans that took place at the Orthodox Academy of Crete at Kolibari, Chania. Through disagreements and confrontations, as well as through fruitful dialogue, they agreed upon a text that includes their thoughts presented in the conference. In the text it is stressed that they want to become ambassadors of World Peace backing its consolidation in every part of the world. They also stressed that they want to defend the idea of Olympic Truce. They made a special reference to the International Village of Cretan Youth to be created at the Municipality of Zarou in Iraklion and expressed the will to cooperate with the Church of Crete, and the local administration authorities. They also suggested the creation of a Federation of Cretan Youth Agencies aimed at preserving and strengthening the different forms of expression used by the Cretans. [09] THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH VISITS KEFALLONIAKefallonia, 25 August 2003 (13:43 UTC+2)Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is on a one-day visit to the Ionian Sea island of Kefallonia today. Earlier in the morning, he went to the Strofades islands to visit the burial site of Agios Dionisios and tour the historic Tower of Paleologi. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was on a three-day visit to the Ionian Sea island of Zakynthos since Saturday, at the invitation of the island's Metropolite Chrisostomos.
