[09] THE US MASS MEDIA APOLOGIZE TO THE GREEKS FOR THEIR CRITICISM BEFORE THE OLYMPIC GAMES

    Washington, 25 August 2004 (15:30 UTC+2)

The overwhelming majority of the US mass media characterize as totally successful the Olympic Games in Athens, while there are certain newspaper columnists who apologize to the Greek people for everything they wrote against Greece and the Olympic Games before their opening.

Mercury News columnist Ann Killion in San Jose, California emphasizes in her article that the Greeks could demand an apology from the rest of the world. Instead, she writes, the Greeks just raise their shoulders and order another iced coffee.

She writes that the Greeks never doubted that they could pull off successful games and her article concludes with the words of a taxi driver in Athens to whom she confessed that she was impressed with the way the Olympic Games were organized. But of course, my dear lady! responded the taxi driver, What did you expect from us? After all, aren't we the ones who came up with the Olympic Games idea first?

The big circulation US newspaper USA Today correspondent in Athens Michael Hiestand praises Greece for hosting flawless Olympic Games. He mentions that Greece should get the highest grade in terms of security, stressing that it spent about US$ 1.5 billion in security and both athletes and spectators are protected in a discreet manner.

Regarding the Greek hospitality, the USA Today correspondent writes that Greece deserves to be praised, stressing that one will have to look very hard to find anti-American sentiments.

The two major US newspapers The Washington Times and The Washington Post focus on the athletes who were distinguished in the games so far and on the Greek pride for hosting successful games. The Washington Times referred extensively to weightlifter Pirros Dimas writing characteristically that he lifted a whole nation on his shoulders.
