  • [01] POLITICAL BATTLE IN EPO

    Governing party of New Democracy Central Committee secretary Vangelis Meimarakis detects a fascist attitude in views according to which, politicians elected by the people are characterized as pimps.

    However, Thessaloniki deputy prefect Dionisis Psomiadis did not make any statement rejecting that the statements he had made earlier concerned Mr. Meimarakis.

    Mr. Mitropoulos, on behalf of the opposition that walked out of the elections in the Greek Football Federation, EPO, announced that appeals will be made to the Greek justice against Mr. Gagatsis' election which, however, was characterized democratic by international observers.

    [02] POLICE INVESTIGATION ON THE TERRORIST ATTACK

    Athens, 1 November 2004 (13:28 UTC+2)

    A full police investigation is in progress on the bomb attack recorded last Friday in Athens targeting special police forces' personnel buses. No victims or material damage had been reported after the attack.

    Authorities are close to identifying the DNA of one of the attackers given the fact that a hair was found which could unveil the genetic identity of one of the bombers.

    No terrorist group has assumed responsibility for the attack so far. Based on the two most likely scenarios, the bombers are either individuals who were involved in the terrorist groups 17 November or ELA in the past or they are a group of individuals who are guided by the terrorists jailed in Koridallos Prison.

    [03] THE NEW UIPI CHAIRMAN IS GREEK

    Greek Federation of Real Estate Owners, POMIDA, President Stratos Paradias was elected in Barcelona to the post of the Chairman of the Union for Immovable Property International, UIPI. It is the first time for a Greek to be elected to the post. The UIPI delegates representing 20 European countries elected Mr. Paradias unanimously.

    The UIPI was founded in Paris in 1923 and its 80th anniversary was celebrated in Athens last year.

    The UIPI is the only pan-European organization representing the interests and defending the rights of real estate property owners in front of the EU, the Council of Europe and all the international institutions and bodies for 80 years. UIPI's members are 20 national non-profit associations of buildings and immovable property owners from most European countries.

    [04] GAINS IN THE ASE

    Athens, 1 November 2004 (17:20 UTC+2)

    Gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.40% at 2499.12 points, while the volume of transactions was small at 118,2 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 196 had gains and 86 had losses, while the value of 122 stocks remained unchanged.

    [05] THE ACTING GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON THE STATEMENTS BY THE ARCHBISHOP

    Acting government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros was called to comment in today's press briefing on the statements made yesterday by Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece who shared the views on homosexuality expressed by Rocco Butiglione.

    The choices made by every Greek citizen are a personal matter, stated Mr. Antonaros.

    [06] KONSTANTOPOULOS TO VISIT BULGARIA

    Coalition of the Left Party President Nikos Konstantopoulos will visit Bulgaria on November 4-5 accompanied by the party's head of International Relations Department Mr. Trigazis.

    During his visit to Bulgaria, Mr. Konstantopoulos will meet with Bulgarian President Mr. Parvanov and Bulgarian Socialist Party President Mr. Stanisev as well as, with the leaderships of political parties represented in the Bulgarian Parliament.

    The Coalition of the Left delegation will discuss the further development of the Greek-Bulgarian relations, developments in the Balkans as well as, European developments given the fact that Bulgaria is expected to become a full EU member in 2007.

    [07] CHRISTOFOROS PAPADOPOULOS IS THE THIRD CANDIDATE FOR THE COALITION OF THE LEFT PARTY PRESIDENCY

    Christoforos Papadopoulos, who is a member of the Coalition of the Left Central Political Committee and Political Secretariat, announced that he will be a candidate for the party presidency in the imminent 4th party congress.

    The other two candidates for the post are Alekos Alavanos and Michalis Papagiannakis.

    [08] PRESIDENT STEPHANOPOULOS MET WITH HIS COUNTERPART FROM KYRGYZSTAN

    Athens, 1 November 2004 (14:31 UTC+2)

    Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev, who is on a three-day formal visit to Greece, met with Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos this morning.

    During the meeting at the Presidential Building they signed bilateral agreements in the sectors of air transportation, tourism and diplomacy.

    Mr. Akayev expressed admiration for Greece's achievements, stressing that his country wishes to get information from Greece aimed at developing and strengthening democratic institutions.

    The Kyrgyz President also met with Parliament President Anna Psarouda-Benaki and afterwards, he laid a wreath at the Monument for the Unknown Soldier.

    [09] THE GREEK MINISTER OF DEFENSE MET WITH HIS GERMAN COUNTERPART IN BERLIN

    Athens, 1 November 2004 (13:52 UTC+2)

    The Greek-German cooperation within the framework of the NATO and EU peace missions, as well as the armaments programs, were at the center of the meeting Greek Minister of Defense Spilios Spiliotopoulos had with his German counterpart Peter Struck in Berlin.

    In the meeting they confirmed the excellent bilateral relations, while regarding the armaments issue, Mr. Spiliotopoulos set as a precondition for the supply of defense systems from abroad the participation of the Greek Defense Industry.

    German officials expressed the wish for Greece's participation in the program for the construction of a fourth generation Eurofighter and Mr. Spiliotopoulos as a former pilot had the opportunity to test its capabilities in a flight simulator.

    The Ministers of Defense of Greece and Germany also agreed that the presence of NATO forces is necessary in Afghanistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

    [10] VOTERS IN THE US APPEAR UNDECIDED

    The latest opinion polls created confusion regarding the intentions of American voters in tomorrow's Presidential elections given the fact that other opinion polls show that President Bush is leading by 4 percentage points, while others put Senator Kerry in the lead by one percentage point.

    For the moment, the effect Osama bin Laden's videotaped threats had on the electorate is unknown even though the opinion poll that puts Mr. Kerry ahead took place after the message was aired.

    The last opinion poll by CNN puts President Bush in the lead by 2 percentage points.
