  • [01] IMPRESSIVE RISE IN THE EXPORTS OF GREEK PEACH PRESERVE

    Thessaloniki, 12 August 2005 (13:39 UTC+2)

The exports of Greek peach preserve to Canada appear notably increased (725.2%) in the first four months of 2005 compared to last year reaching 2.6 m Canadian dollars, compared to 315 thousand Canadian dollars in the period of January-April 2004.

At a time when peach growers in Greece are at odds with cannery owners regarding wholesale prices, the Greek peach preserve is taking away part of the Canadian market from the so-called new exporting countries concerning the specific product. Specifically, Australia, Argentina and Chile (the United States, however, still occupies the top place as the main exporter).

Based on the temporary figures presented by the National Statistics Agency of Canada, the volume of Greek exports to the country in the first four months of the year reached 47.5 m Canadian dollars (31 m euros) recording an increase of 49.6% compared to the same period in 2004. On the contrary, Canada's exports to Greece recorded significant drop at 42.8 m Canadian dollars (27 m euros) down by 48% compared to last year.

    [02] MEASURES FOR SAFE EXODUS

    Athens, 12 August 2005 (12:56 UTC+2)

Measures to ensure the safe exodus of the August 15 holidaymakers have been taken by the responsible authorities, as a great number of people are expected to leave the big cities for the 4-day holiday.

Ministry of Merchant Marine officials appeared certain that the thousands of people who will choose to travel by boat will not be stranded at the sea ports and delays in coastal shipping service will be avoided.

    [03] EMERGENCY MEETING

    Athens, 12 August 2005 (12:45 UTC+2)

An emergency meeting has been called to take place at the Ministry of Development to deal with the issue of the speedy increase of oil prices.

The effects of the price hikes are starting to become apparent as Olympic Airlines have already announced that ticket prices will rise.

In the meeting, pressures will be exerted on the market aimed at limiting the profit margin.

The Competitiveness Commission has already been asked to intervene in 12 prefectures across the country and in the gas stations along the Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki national motorway.

Yesterday, the price of oil reached 65.80 euros a barrel. Prices are up due to the economic growth recorded in the United States, the increased energy demand and the increased car sales mainly the luxury 4x4 jeeps that consume a lot of gas. Also, the market is concerned about developments in Saudi Arabia and Iran.

[04] THE TYMPOU AIRPORT IS ILLEGAL FOR THE ICAO

    Nicosia, 12 August 2005 (13:15 UTC+2)

The position of the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, on Cyprus has not changed and continues to follow the UN policy on Cyprus, stated ICAO Council President Dr. Assad Kotaite adding that the illegal airport at the occupied Tympou, in the northern part of the island, is not on the international airports list.

In a formal statement is mentioned that Dr. Kotaite in a response letter addressed to Cyprus Ambassador to Washington and the country's representative to the international organization Mr. Evripidis Evriviades dated August 9, stressed that all ICAO members should act in accordance with the existing security terms for international flights as they have been set by the organization itself.
