  • [01] NEW PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM

    Archbishop Theophilos of Thavorio is the 97th Patriarch of Jerusalem. He was elected today by the Holy Synod replacing former Patriarch Erinaeus whose appeal against the procedure was rejected earlier.

    Initially, three hierarchs had been selected from whom the 14-member Holy Synod elected the new Patriarch.

    The three candidates selected by the Council of Electors made up of 47 hierarchs were Archbishop Theophilos of Thavorio, Archbishop Aristarchos of Konstantini and Archbishop Alexios of Tiberiad.

    Theophilos is 54 years old and had been ordained bishop by former Patriarch Erinaeus last January.

    [02] INITIAL FINDINGS

    The Greek and Cypriot specialists who will meet in Athens today are expected to reach initial conclusions regarding the causes of the Cypriot airline Helios Airways passenger plane crash at Grammatikos near Athens on August 14.

    Based on the examination of the airplane's second black box, a voice had been recorded calling for help.

    The doomed airplane had arrived in Cyprus with a door failure 24 hours before its last flight to Athens.

    [03] THE GROWTH RATE OF THE GREEK ECONOMY IS SATISFACTORY

    Minister of Finance Giorgos Alogoskoufis characterized as satisfactory the growth rate of the Greek economy and underlined that it goes well pointing out that the growth rate is higher than the European average. He also stressed that there is a drop in the employment rate compared to 2004.

    Mr. Alogoskoufis stressed after his meeting with the prime minister that this is the result of government initiatives that will continue.

    Mr. Alogoskoufis stated that the goal is to ensure that deficit will be cut and growth rate will continue at the same or even higher levels to improve the living standards for the people and limit unemployment.

    [04] TWO RENAULT MODELS RECALLED

    A recall program for Renault models Clio II and Modus is underway by the automobile manufacturer RENAULT SAS through the RAPEX system, announced Ministry of Development general secretary Athanasios Skordas.

    The recall concerns model Clio II, a total of 3,891 cars, built in the period May 8, 2003 - November 18, 2004 because of a short-circuit risk in the steering wheel compartment. Also, it concerns the Renault Modus, a total of 596 cars, built before April 5, 2005 which can become difficult to control because of steering wheel assembly errors.

    [05] THE GREEK PARLIAMENT SUPPORTS THE RESTORATION OF ST. NIKOLAOS CHURCH IN CAIRO

    One of the historic churches of the Greek-Orthodox Church in Africa, the church of St. Nikolaos in Cairo, will regain its old glory with the economic support of the Greek Parliament which decided to support the restoration work with sum of 95,000 euros.

    The restoration work began 3 years ago with the support of the Greek Parliament and according to historically based evidence the church was in operation since 1481. The formal inauguration of the church will be held in early 2006.

    [06] HALF OF AIR DISASTERS INVOLVE LOW COST AIRLINES

    Half of the air accidents recorded involve airplanes of low cost airlines. However, these airlines cover, according to official data, just 10% of the world air transportation.

    Based on research, 60-80% of air disasters are the result of human error in spite of the fact that high-tech electronic systems are being used for the navigation of passenger planes, while half of the air accidents happen during take off namely, in the first 3.5 minutes of the flight.

    [07] MUSIC NIGHT FOR THE GREEK-SPEAKING REGIONS OF SOUTH ITALY

    Stockholm, 22 August 2005 (13:54 UTC+2)

    A cultural music night for the Greek-speaking regions of South Italy titled Imesta griki, milume griko is organized by the Greek Embassy in Sweden in cooperation with the Italian Institute C M Lerici in the Swedish capital.

    The event will take place at the Italian Institute in Stockholm on August 29.
