    Former Academy of Athens President Agapitos Tsopanakis died in the island of Rhodes today at the age of 97. His funeral will be held tomorrow at his birthplace Salakos in the municipality of Kamiros.

    Agapitos Tsopanakis taught for years at Thessaloniki's Aristotle University Philosophy School and left behind a rich literary and scientific work.

    He was elected member of the Academy of Athens in 1984 and one of his greatest works was the Modern Greek Grammar published in 1994.

    [02] TAX INCENTIVES FOR BIOFUEL

    Kozani, 27 October 2005 (16:30 UTC+2)

    The Ministry of Finance and Economy will offer tax exemptions or exemptions from import duties to biofuel quantities of up to 150,000 tons in the next three-year period, according to Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy Christos Folias. Mr. Folias addressed a conference held in Kozani, northwest Greece, on the Cultivation of energy plants for the production of biofuel - The prospect of a new market for the farmers, and stated that this decision is of a strategic importance in combination with the creation of the first biodiesel production industry plant.

    Referring to the cultivation of energy plants that will be the raw material used in the biofuel production plants, he added that it is an alternative and profitable activity for the Greek farmers.

    Mr. Folias stated that a systematic work is being done so that by the end of 2010, biofuel and the rest renewable sources of energy will correspond to 5.7% of the gas and petrol used in the transportations sector.

    Deputy Minister of Development Giorgos Salagoudis' adviser Panagiotis Papastamatiou said that in order to meet the 5.7% target the biodiesel quantity necessary for Greece in 2010 is estimated to be 148,000 tons.

    [03] PRESIDENT PAPOULIAS VISITED VERGINA

    Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias issued an invitation to all those disputing the Hellenic character of Macedonia to visit the findings unearthed by archaeological excavations in Vergina.

    President Papoulias, who is in Thessaloniki within the framework of the three-day celebrations in the city, visited the archaeological site of Vergina and the museum where the priceless findings from the royal tombs of the Macedons are being kept.

    President Papoulias stated that he was thrilled about the visit which was not included in his formal schedule and when asked about the FYROM name issue and the intransigence displayed by the neighboring country's leadership he responded that he would invite these gentlemen to come here and visit the museum.

    Minister of Defense Spilios Spiliotopoulos also visited the archaeological site of Vergina.

    [04] STUDENT PARADE IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 27 October 2005 (13:14 UTC+2)

    The three-day celebrations in Thessaloniki on the occasion of the anniversary of its liberation from the Ottomans in 1912, the city's patron Saint Dimitrios feast day and the October 28 national holiday commemorating the heroic NO of the Greeks to fascist Italy during WWII continue today with a student parade held this morning.

    Before the parade, student representatives laid wreaths at the 3rd Army Corps monument.

    Later this evening, Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias will attend a formal dinner at the Military Officers' Club and deliver a very significant speech.

    Events in Thessaloniki will culminate with the grand military parade to be held tomorrow October 28. National holiday parades will also take place in all the cities in the country.

    [05] THE LEADER OF PASOK MET WITH THE MAYOR OF LONDON

    Main opposition Socialist Party PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou met at noon today with London mayor Ken Livingstone.

    Among the issues they discussed were, the Olympic Truce, the return of the Parthenon Marbles and cooperation on local government and education issues.

    [06] INFORMAL EU SUMMIT MEETING

    Brussels, 27 October 2005 (13:29 UTC+2)

    The informal EU Summit meeting taking place today at Hampton Court in Britain will focus on the need to update and reform the European economies to preserve the fundamental principles of the European social model facing the challenges of globalization and population ageing.

    The EU response to the challenges of globalization at a social and economic level will be at the forefront in the informal EU Summit meeting.
