SAMOS, 7 - 12 JULY 1996

"PLATO'S POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY AND CONTEMPORARY DEMOCRATIC THEORY : A DIALOGUE"

We are pleased to announce that the preparations for the:

EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GREEK PHILOSOPHY
are well under way and we anticipate an academically sound, lively and amicable Conference.

This circular is to inform you of matters relating to the Conference (commencement and venue etc).

I. CONFERENCE IN ATHENS

  1. The Conference in ATHENS is presently scheduled to start at 18.00 on Thursday 4th July 1996 on the hill of PNYX, site of the ancient Athenian Assembly (EKKLHSIA TOY DHMOY).
  2. On Friday morning the conference session will begin at 9:00 and continue till 13:30. In the afternoon and evening an outdoor session will be held at the location of Plato's Academy in downtown Athens.
  3. On Saturday, as things now st and, there will be a free morning during which a visit to the Acropolis and to the National Archeological Museum is planned.
  4. Of course participants who have visited these sites may depart, if they so wish, for Samos. All other participants should also make arrangements to depart for Samos no later than Sunday morning by plane.

II. CONFERENCE IN SAMOS

  1. The Conference in SAMOS will start at 18.00 on Sunday 7th of July 1996 in the Conference Hall of the Doryssa Bay Hotel in Pythagorion (tel. of the Doryssa Bay Hotel 0273-61360, 61352, 61062).
  2. It is expected that the Conference will continue until (and including) 12th of July 1996. Those attending the Conference in Pythagorion for the first time are informed that the sessions are from 8.30-13.30 and 17.00-20.00.

    During the afternoon break, delegates are able to enjoy the sea and sandy beach in front of the Doryssa Bay Hotel less than a hundred yards from the Conference Room.

  3. On the last day of the Conference, i.e 12th of July 1996 , there will be a Tour of Samos (FORM No. 11). Departure will be between 8.30-9.00 a.m., returning at around 18.00 p.m.
  4. With regard to the other events during the Conference, delegates will be informed on arrival in Athens, when they will receive the full Conference programme.
  5. Concerning the events at the Conference, delegates are kindly requested to attend all the Conference proceedings and contribute through their presence to the creation of a true academic dialogue and the kind of warm atmosphere and friendly communication that are part of the aims of the Conferences organised by the International Association for Greek Philosophy (IAGP) and the International Center for Greek Philosophy and Culture. This is a small sacrifice for the good of the Conference which may thus become the start of a course to a more fulfilling life.
  6. Enclosed together with this Circular are FORMS No. 9A and 9B (Residence), No. 10A and 10B (Travel), and No. 11 (Tour of Samos).
  7. Once again in anticipation of an enjoyable Conference in a civilised, intellectual and pleasant environment, we look forward to seeing you in ATHENS and SAMOS, in the very heart of the Aegean world.
