Epitropoulos" <epi22@hotmail.com> THE FOUNDATION FOR HELLENIC ACADEMIC STUDIES Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA The Foundation for Hellenic Academic Studies (HELL.A.S.) is a non-profit, educational and cultural organization. It was founded in 1998 to promote Hellenism and Research on Modern Greece through a wide range of educational and cultural programs. Our mission is to develop vital social, academic, and community infrastructures that will enable HELL.A.S. to pursue an ambitious program in the realms of culture and education. Our programs include Greek language education, the history of Modern Greece, cultural education, academic conferences and symposia, a newsletter, The Echo of HELLAS, a speakers bureau, and community activities promoting Hellenism, Greece, and Greek-Americans. HELL.A.S. cooperates with area colleges and universities, and intends to establish a Program of Modern Greek Studies in Pittsburgh, PA. Instructors are university faculty members, artists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, researchers, elected leaders, clergy, journalists and other well-known professionals. FOUNDATION for HELLENIC ACADEMIC STUDIES (HELL.A.S.) INNAUGURAL CONFERENCE SPRING 2000 (May 11 - 13, 2000) "GREECE at the MILLENNIUM: Domestic and International Dimensions" CALL FOR PAPERS Proposals for individual papers and panels are invited on any aspect of contemporary Hellenic culture, language, literature, history, society, politics, economics, and the arts. Comparative approaches placing the study of modern Hellenism in its wider geographical and historical context, be it the Balkans or the Mediterranean, global politics or diaspora culture, past or present history, are encouraged. Inter- or cross-disciplinary explorations approaching a single issue from the perspective of different fields across the human and social sciences and the arts are also encouraged. No author may submit more than one abstract. A volume of the proceedings will be published. Authors are requested to forward the title of their paper and submit a 350-500 word abstract, to the Session Organizer, for review by November 17, 1999. Please indicate the appropriate session for your paper (if you find one in the list of Work Sessions). We intend to send notifications regarding acceptance decisions of abstracts no later than three weeks after their reception. Upon acceptance, completed papers will be due January 14, 2000. If necessary, feedback for revisions will be provided by early February 2000, and subsequent revised documents will be due by the last week of March 2000. Call for Session Organizers We hereby call for the submission of proposals for work sessions. Proposals should include the title of the session as well as the names and addresses of participants (if already known), and should be submitted directly to the Conference Organizer via mail, fax or e-mail. Each session will include 4-5 papers, approximately 20 minutes each. Session organizers are encouraged to contact potential participants directly. Relevant proposals for papers submitted directly to the Conference Organizer will be referred to session organizers, who will be responsible for finalizing the schedule of their sessions. Session organizers will report their Final Program to the Program Committee, through the Conference Organizer. We intend to send notifications regarding acceptance decisions of session proposals and final programs of sessions no later than three weeks after their reception. Prospective participants are expected to come at their own expense and should therefore secure their own funding before submitting a proposal. Upon acceptance of their abstracts, all participants will be required to pay the pre-registration fee of US$150 in order for their name to appear on the symposium program.
