THIRTEENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

ON GREEK PHILOSOPHY

on the topic of:

"THE PHILOSOPHY OF COMMUNICATION"

{A PHILOSOPHY CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO SOCRATES

ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2400th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH}

RHODES -LINDOS: AUGUST 18th to 25th, 2001

We are pleased to announce that the preparations for the:

THIRTEENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GREEK PHILOSOPHY

are well under way and we anticipate an academically enriching, lively and amicable Conference.

This circular is to inform you of matters relating to the Conference.

Commencement, Venue and Accomodation

1. The Conference, as the things stand now, will start at 18.00 on Saturday 18th of AUGUST 2001 in the Conference Hall of the Mediterranean Hotel in the town of Rhodes (MEDITERRANEAN HOTEL , 35 KOS STRET, 85100 RHODES - GREECE, TEL. 0241-24661, FAX: 0241- 22828, Email: info@mediterranean.gr).

The Hotel is located next to the central beach of the city of Rhodes and all the rooms are air-conditioned. The manager of the hotel has reserved a number of rooms for the participants of the Conference. The room prices are indicated in the Accomodation Form attached to this Circular. As there are not enough rooms there for all the participants, those interested in staying at the MEDITERRANEAN HOTEL should send their accomodation forms together with the relevant deposit as early as possible. The Invited Speakers are asked to send only the Accomodation Form indicating the dates of arrival and departure.

2. It is expected that the Conference will continue until (and including) 25th of August 2001. Those attending the Conference of IAGP for the first time are informed that the sessions are from 8.30-13.30 and 17.00-20.00.

During the afternoon break, delegates are able to enjoy the blue sea and sandy beach in front of the MEDITERRANEAN HOTEL less than fifty yards from the Conference Room. Participants are advised to carry with them, apart from their swiming gear, hat or some other protection, since it is quite hot in Rhodes at this time of year (the average daytime temperature varies from 30 to 35 degrees centigrade).

Conference Events

3.With regard to the other events during the Conference (music concerts, theater performances, receptions, etc.), which usually take place after evening sessions (21.00 - 23.00), participants will be informed on arrival in Rhodes and they will receive the full Conference programme (which is almost a printed book of approximately 100 pages) during the registration , on the first day of the Conference.

4. Concerning the events at the Conference, participants are kindly requested to attend all the Conference proceedings and contribute through their presence to the creation of a true academic dialogue and the kind of warm atmosphere and friendly communication that are part of the aims of the Conferences organised by the International Association for Greek Philosophy (IAGP) and the International Center for Greek Philosophy and Culture (ICOGPC). This is a small sacrifice for the good of the Conference which may thus become the start of a course to a more fulfilling life.

Travel arrangements

5. Participants can reach the island of Rhodes either by ship or by plane.

The ships to Rhodes depart from Piraeus and the destination for Conference participants is the port of town of Rhodes . From the port to the MEDITERRANEAN HOTEL there is a distance of approximately 1.5 km.

The distance from the airport to the MEDITERRANEAN HOTEL is approximately 14 km. From the airport to the hotel it takes 15 minutes by taxi, which costs around 3,000 drs.

The Organizing Committee wishes to stress to all participants traveling to Rhodes by plane, the importance of making airline reservations to and from the island in advance. To avoid difficulties, flights from Rhodes to Athens at this high peak tourist period should be booked in advance.

Travel arrangements to and from the island of Rhodes are the responsibility of individual participants.

Conference Papers

6. We would also like to draw the participants' attention to the following matters regarding Conference papers:

I. Because of the great number of successful applications submitted in due time, and taking into consideration the strong interest and desire of many young scholars as well as eminent professors to come to Rhodes and participate in the Conference, the categorisation of the papers to be read at the Conference will be as follows:

Category A: Papers of 30 minutes duration by Invited Speakers.

Category B: Presentation of original academic papers

{Category B1: 20 minutes duration.

Category B2: 15 minutes duration.

Category B3: 10 minutes duration}.

Category C: Short interventions and presentations 5 minutes duration

II. As has already been announced, participants may have two versions of their papers:

a. One to be read at the Conference (with 30 , 20 , 15 and 10 minutes duration, depending on the time allocated in the Letter of Acceptance, which each speaker received prior to or together with this Circular).

The final text of the paper to be read at the Conference should be sent to the Organising Committee no later than 30th June 2001. This is necessary since papers have to be available to official interpereters of the Conference so that they can study them carefully.

b. Other being the completed final version of the paper prepared for publication in the books to be published in the ICOGPC's Ionia Publications (whose maximum length can be up to 15 printed pages, notes included).

In case a participant has not submitted the Final Version of the paper for publication to the Organizing Committee before or during the Conference, he/she should send it to the Committee no later than September 30, 2001 in order for the paper to be considered for publication. As it is known, it has been the policy of the Conference from the very beginning that a) the Academic Committee of ICOGPC reserves the right of giving final approval and recommendation as to which papers will be published, and that b) the exclusive copyright of papers to be published belongs to ICOGPC.

Lindos Excursion and Session

7. Towards the end of the Conference, there will be a half-day excursion and a session in the town of Lindos, the birthplace of the Sage Cleoboulos .The departure will be around 16.30 and we will return late in the evening. (The exact time of the return will be given in the Conference Program.)

The transport costs of the excursion and the dinner after the session will be covered by the Conference. Therefore, participants who wish to attend the excursion and the session in Lindos should fill out the Participation Form No.11 and send it to the Secretariat of the Conference not later than June 15th 2001.

Cancellations

8. The Organizing Committee would like to use this opportuinity to draw the attention of all the participants to the fact that, due to the obligations and responsibilities already undertaken by the Committee, any cancellation of participation that comes after 1st of June 2001 creates tremendous organizational and financial problems to the Conference. The Committee would, therefore, like to kindly appeal to participants to bear that fact in mind and, if any changes be in order, to notify the Organizing Committee as soon as possible, most preferably not later than June 15 th 2001.

Forms

9. Enclosed together with this Circular are Form No. 9 (Accomodation Form), No. 10 (Travel Form), No.11 (Excursion and Session in Lindos Form).

Once again in anticipation of an enjoyable Conference in a civilised, intellectual and pleasant environment, we look forward to seeing you in the famous insland of Rhodes in the very heart of the Aegean world.

With best wishes

Konstantine Boudouris

Professor of Philosophy

Univesity Athens

President of the Organising Committee
