AHEPA CONVENTION SET TO OPEN IN ATLANTA AUGUST 9

Archbishop Spyridon, Senators Sarbanes and Snowe, John Brademas, Mary Lefkowitz, Alex Spanos and Congressman Pappas to Attend

Washington, D.C. July 18 -- Renowned classicist Mary Lefkowitz, and businessman and philanthropist Alex Spanos, will headline the 1997 AHEPA Grand Banquet during the group's U.S.-Canada Convention, AHEPA announced today. The event will also include His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Senators Paul Sarbanes and Olympia Snowe, Congressman Mike Pappas and New York University President Emeritus former Congressman John Brademas.

The convention, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of AHEPA, will be held in Atlanta from August 9 to 15. Over three thousand Greek Americans are expected to attend.

The meeting will also include AHEPA's second "Hellenic Expo." The exposition will run from August 10-12 and will included a host of products and services available to Greek American consumers and companies from dozens of businesses and service providers.

The AHEPA Convention typically includes participants of all ages and is open to all. This year's gathering will be held at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Atlanta. The wide range of nightly social events will include "Greek Night" on Monday, August 11, the black-tie Grand Banquet on Wednesday August 13, and the Grand Ball on Thursday August 14. Educational seminars and business meetings will also be held throughout the convention. Atlanta also boasts a number of fun and interesting sites including the Carter Library and Museum, CNN Center and Stone Mountain Park.

AHEPA - the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association - is the largest Greek heritage organization in the world, and a major community service organization in North America.
