Crete, Summer 2001: Global Volunteers offers summer service programPublic Events Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <dist@hri.org>Originally From: Barbara DeGroot <bdegroot@globalvolunteers.org> BEYOND "ZORBA" -- DISCOVER THE REAL CRETE Being Greek means more than a rousing Zorba dance, a buttery slice of baklava and a shot of potent ouzo. It means being part of a rich heritage that is largely responsible for the cultural foundations of Western civilization. This summer, Global Volunteers invites Greek-Americans and other service-minded individuals to discover their roots -- and give something back -- by joining two-week service projects on the picturesque island of Crete. As a volunteer, you will be part of a small team of likeminded individuals teaching conversational English to youths in a fun, informal summer camp format. The setting is a picturesque mountain retreat center, complete with swimming pool. During free time, explore the fascinating archaeological sites at Knossos and Phaestos, the dramatic Samarian Gorge (considered Europe’s “Grand Canyon”), laid-back fishing villages and ancient mountain communities. Volunteers are responsible for freetime costs. If you enjoy working with youths and exploring other cultures, this may be the match for you -- no formal experience or expertise is required. Volunteers pay a fee of $2,195 that covers food, lodging, ground transportation at the site and project expenses. Airfare is extra. All costs, including airfare, are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers. Dates for upcoming Crete teams are as follows: June 30-July 15, July 28-Aug. 11 and Aug. 11-25. Call toll-free 800-487-1074 or dial up the website at http://www.globalvolunteers.org (email@globalvolunteers.org) to learn more about these programs. Global Volunteers is a nonprofit, non-sectarian organization that offers short-term service programs in 18 countries around the world.
