It is with great pleasure that we invite you to a special, free of charge, Ceremony-Symposium to honor the memory of Dr. George Papanicolaou to be held on Sunday, October 20, 2002, 7 p.m. in the West Wing of the Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts.

I believe this is a unique opportunity, especially for students, to recognize the potential in each one of you as we honor the accomplishments of the late Dr. George Papanicolaou, and the present honoree. During this event, you will also have the opportunity to meet with prominent individuals in the academic and business communities.

During this ceremony, the George Papanicolaou Gold Medal will be bestowed upon a distinguished physician scientist in the United States or Canada who embodies the ideals and the scientific spirit of Dr. Papanicolaou, the discoverer of the “Pap Test”. This award is given by the Prefecture of the island of Evia, Greece, the birthplace of Dr. Papanicolaou and is organized by the Evoikos Society of New England, Inc, in association with the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Boston, the Consulate General of Greece in Boston, World council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), the Hellenic-American National Council, the Federation of the Hellenic American Societies of New England, the Federation of Evian Societies of USA- Canada, the New England Hellenic Medical and Dental Society and the Maliotis Cultural Center. The first award was given in 2000 to Dr. George Canellos of Harvard’s Dana Farber Institute. This year’s Medal will be presented as a lifetime achievement award to:

Theoharis C. Theoharides, Ph.D., M.D. Professor of Pharmacology, Internal Medicine and Biochemistry Tufts University School of Medicine, New England Medical Center

For his contribution to the fields of Humanism and Medicine.
