SPONSORED BY: Greek Study Group, Center for European Studies. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Yannis Pyrgiotis (MIT, B. Arch., 1968; MIT, M. Arch.A.S. and M.C.P., 1972) is Executive Director and Chief Technical Officer of the "Athens 2004" Organizing Committee for the Athens Olympic Games, responsible for the Olympic Works, Technology, Environment and Culture Divisions. He has previously served as advisor to the Ministries of National Economy and of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works of Greece and as Director of the "Athens Organization," a public entity for the protection of the environment and urban planning for the city of Athens. He was also the Government's technical expert in drafting the European and National Spatial Development Plan and has served as technical expert to the European Commission on inter-regional co-operation, innovative actions and urban development projects of the European Regional Development Fund. A founding member of the Greek Urban and Regional Planners Association, he was responsible for the establishment of a new Department for Planning and Regional Development at the University of Thessaly. He has also served on the teaching staff of the Greek Open University and the National School of Public Administration.
