The Propylaia, the monumental gateway to the Akropolis, is a building complex of convoluted history and pioneering architecture. The ambitious project was never fully completed, yet, even in its truncated form, it gives valuable insights into the working process of Athenian architects and craftsmen in the time of Perikles. The Propylaia originally housed a picture gallery with panel paintings by great masters of Greek painting and is considered to have been Europe's first picture gallery. The lecture is free to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. The book will be available in the Gallery bookstore prior to the lecture. The East Building is located at Fourth Street and Constitution Avenue, NW Washington, DC. For additional information, call (202) 842-6258.
