Vibrant and rapidly evolving Athens, confluence of the ancient and modern worlds, is the subject of this colorful pictorial essay. Historic monuments crown this mythology-laden city - from the bare marble grandeur of the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysus to the stately ruins of the temple of Olympian Zeus. Athens' conjunction of the very old and the relatively new results in many quaint neighborhoods. Tour Plaka, the oldest quarter of modern Athens; the market district of Monastiraki; the cafes and bars of Psirri; or the excellent museums and trendy boutiques of Kolonaki.

In addition, explore the wider Athens, set against the sun-drenched hill of Lycabettus and the glistening waters of the Saronic Gulf. Architectural photographer John Cleave has taken his original photographs of post-Olympic Athens and modified them with the use of Adobe Photoshop, creating an individual and artistic rendering of the enchanting city.

John Cleave is an architectural photographer whose work has been widely shown and published in books and journals. His previous book, published by Editions Didier Miller in 2003, was the best-selling Washington: Scenes from a Capital City, illustrating a city he knows well from his years in the World Bank. The British-born artist has been visiting Greece for over 30 years and is presently a trustee of the American Farm School in Thessaloniki. He holds degrees in economics from London and Oxford, and a Ph. D. from Stanford.

Nikos Vatopoulos was born in 1960 and is a writer with Kathimerini, one of the leading newspapers in Greece. He writes on architecture, literature and city culture, as well as profiles of writers and architects. He has published a book in English on Athens called Facing Athens, the Facades of a Capital City.
