The Embassy of Greece in collaboration with the Greek Film Center and support by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece,

present the Greek Film Series: PANORAMA OF GREEK CINEMA

at the historic AVALON Theatre in Washington DC.

The series provides a wonderful opportunity for DC filmgoers to experience the best of Greek cinema. Screenings will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at 8:00 PM

Synopsis

³Quiet Days in August is a moving, meditative drama interweaving three talesof love and loss set in Athens in August, a time when many flee the metropolis for the mountains or seaside. As the director puts it, ³Only the lonely stay behind ­ and those who love the deserted city.² A retired seaman aids a recently widowed woman who has fainted in the subway, and unexpectedly finds new spark in his life. An elderly woman, living in isolation and lost in dreams of the past, befriends the young woman who is her new neighbor. A meek bank clerk receives, every day at 4:00 pm, an erotic phone call from an unknown woman. ³A feather in the cap for Greek cinema . . . A gentle, touching and beautifully made film. Photography by Dinos Katsouridis is outstanding. . . There¹s also a beautiful score by veteran composer Manos Hadjidakis² (Stratton). Pandelis Voulgaris

He was born in Athens in 1940 and studied at the Stavrakou Film School. He worked initially as an assistant director and made his first short in 1965. Since then his films have won international acclaim and numerous awards establishing his reputation as one of the foremost Greek film directors of his generation. Pantelis Vouglaris has also directed several documentaries for Greek television and the hour-long documentary on the poet Yannis Ritsos for German Television. He has also directed for the stage. In 1995 Pantelis Voulgaris was honored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York with a mid-career retrospective.
