  • [01] ARMED CLASH IN SERIK - 10 TERRORISTS KILLED

    ANTALYA, April 11 (A.A) - Security forces killed 10 terrorists from the separatist organization in an armed clash which erupted on Friday. Kerim Kirca, a lieutenant-colonel from Gendermarie was wounded in the clash.

    Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz responding to questions on the incident said 10 terrorists were killed in a clash between security forces and the terrorists.

    When aksed how this will effect tourism, Yilmaz said "It will have good effects because for a long time we had known they were there. Now it is in large measure cleared up," he said.

    Huseyin Tuglu, Antalya Governor said the clash erupted in mountainous region near Gebiz region in Serik township adding that 10 terrorists were killed during hot clashes.

    [02] EXPLOSION IN SULTANAHMET - INTERIOR MINISTER BASESGIOGLU: ''THE INJURED ONES HAVE NO VITAL WOUNDS''

    BURSA, April 11 (A.A) - Murat Basesgioglu, Interior Minister, said on Friday that nine people who were injured in explosion in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district had no vital wounds.

    Basesgioglu said a wide ranged operation was launched in connection with the explosion. He said no organization assumed responsibility for the explosion so far ''the evaluation of our friends is that it may be the separatist terrorist PKK organization.''

    Responding to a question Basesgioglu said he did not receive any letter from the chief of the separatist terrorist organization adding that Turkey's taking this person as interlocutor was regardless of question.

    An explosion in a park in the Sultanahmet district Friday injured nine people, three of them foreigners and two of them were soldiers.

    The injured had been taken to local hospitals for treatment. The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

    Two of the wounded ones were Indians, one person from New Zealand and four of them were Turkish citizens. Seven of the wounded ones are in good conditions.

    [03] TURKEY-ARMENIA - NEW HEAD OF STATE OF ARMENIA AGAIN BRINGS SO-CALLED ''HISTORICAL ISSUES'' TO THE AGENDA

    MOSCOW, April 11 (A.A) - Robert Kocaryan, new Head of State of Armenia brought so-called ''historical issues'' to the agenda again.

    In a statement which he made to a weekly newspaper Moskovski Novosti (news from Moscow) Kocaryan responded to questions which said ''previous administration did not put any pre-condition to relations with Turkey. Why did you assume a different attitude on historical issues apart from the other administration?''

    Kocaryan said ''we should not be a slave of history, the best way would be to remove tensions with Turkey'' adding that this was possible.

    Kocaryan claimed that Turkey supported Azerbaijan and blocked Armenia, Turkish-Armenian relations should not be linked to Armenian-Azeri relations.

    [04] BLACK SEA NAVAL FORCES COMMANDERS MEETING ENDS

    SOFIA, April 11 (A.A) - The Black Sea regional countries' Naval Forces commanderships decided to cooperate on struggle against weapon, drug, and human smuggling'' issues, it was reported on Saturday.

    Vice Admiral Salim Dervisoglu, Naval Forces Commander, represented Turkey in the meeting which ended in Varna city of Bulgaria.

    Naval Forces Commanders of Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Georgia and Ukraine participated in the meeting where Greece, Italy and Representatives of NATO participated in observer status. A joint declaration was issued after the meeting where the concerned sides decided to improve cooperation.

    The attending sides said in the declaration that they reached to a consensus of opinion to establish a monitoring committee between the naval forces of the regional countries to provide a more effective control in the Black Sea.

    The joint monitoring commitee will organize exchange of information between the related countries on smuggling issues in particular.

    Meanwhile, upon the proposal of Vice Admiral Salim Dervisoglu, the attending sides adopted the view that all problems would be solved within the framework of international agreements.

    [05] TURKEY TO WATCH FROM THE SPACE - ISTANBUL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY CARRIES OUT EFFORTS TO ACTIVATE TURKEY'S FIRST REMOTE PERCEPTION ''SATELLITE EARTH THERMINAL''

    ANKARA, April 11 (A.A) - Turkey became one of the countries in the ''space'' with Turksat satellites, and now getting prepared to grapple to this infinity. Turkey, which purchased pictures taken by the satellites of other countries, now will get the information from the space and will at the same time gain profit by selling these pictures to other countries.

    Efforts are underway to activate Turkey's first remote perception ''Satellite Earth Therminal'' which forsaw getting information from the satellites that watches a wide range extending from Austria to Kazakhstan and from Russia to Egypt.

    Gulsum Saglamer, Rector of the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) said they started this project in 1994 to make Turkey compete with other countries who make use of the space.

    Saglamer said Turkey was bound to other countries in gathering information who have therminal adding that with this therminal Turkey will take necessary information from the satellites. Saglamer said the therminal will cost approximately 10 million dollars.

    ''We regard the project as a turning point for Turkey. We purchased the data in every field from foreign countries so far with this project Turkey will have its own data'' Saglamer said.

    Saglamer said this Satellite Earth Therminal will also be used for telecommunication aim adding that the center of the therminal will be Istanbul.

    She said at the first stage, the therminal will be for civilian use and all the institutions will be able to reach the information gathered by the therminal.

    [06] EMERGENCY RULE REGIONAL GOVERNOR ARSLAN: ''25,000 TERRORISTS RENDERED INEFFECTIVE SO FAR''

    ELAZIG, April 11 (A.A) - Aydin Arslan, Emergency Regional Rule Governor said on Saturday that 25,000 terrorists were rendered ineffective since the struggle started against the separatist terrorist organization adding that they have come the the last point in the struggle.

    Arslan told A.A correspondent that a great success was recorded in struggle against terrorism especially since 1994 adding that 20, 000 terrorists were killed so far. He said 4,600 people from security forces and 4,500 people from civilians died so far.

    Arslan said leader cadre of the separatist organization left the organization and fled.

    Arslan said efforts are underway to erase the negative thraces of terrorism adding that they favored lifting of emergency state a time later.

    Arslan said they initiated studies to attrack the enterpreneurs to the region to solve the problem of unemployment.

    [07] TURKEY UNDER THE THREAT OF MURDERER MOSS

    ANKARA, April 11 (A.A) - The murderer moss, which was seen in Mersin-Akkuyu and Kemer-Ucadalar, now began to threaten Bodrum shores, it was reported on Saturday. Environment Ministry wanted fishermen, sailors and divers who see the murderer moss to inform about it. The ministry is in an effort to prepare a project to this end.

    Murderer Moss (Caulerpa Taxifolia) which was poured into the Mediterranean from the Monaco aquarium by mistake is called as an ecologic disaster by experts.

    Fifty-three scientists from Turkey, Albania, Algeria, Cyprus, Croatia, Egypt, Spain France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Monaco, Syria, Slovenia and Tunisia convened in Crete last month and determined the recent situation about the ''expansionist Caulerpa types in the Mediterranean''. According to this, there are more than 70 typres of Caulerpa type sea moss in the world.

    The murderer moss, one of these types, was determined to effect the Mediterranean and detoriated ecologic balance.

    Dr. Mustafa Tolay, one of the members of the Turkish delegation said ''Lesepsiyen Immigrants'' moss spread in the Eastern Mediterranean after the opening of Suez Channel.

    Stressing that the terrorist moss spread rapidly in the shores of Eastern Mediterranean, Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, Tunia, Egypt, Greece and Italy, Tolay said this moss was also seen Turkey's shores.

    ''The terrorist moss was seen in Mersin-Akkuyu, Antalya Kemer-Ucadalar in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. Now a great number could be seen in Bodrum region'' Tolay said adding that the moss covered the sea fields which have the function of the lungs of the sea.

    ''Murderer and terrorist moss are not the original living things of the sea. They may be identified as a kind of sea cancer'' he said.

    [08] MASS BLOW ON SEPARATIST TERRORIST ORGANIZATION

    ANTALYA, April 11 (A.A) - Security forces devastated ''Tendurek group'' , one of the two groups of the separatist terrorist organization in the Mediterranean during ongoing operations carried out in the region for three days, it was reported on Saturday.

    Security forces continue operations in Bozburun mountain in northern parts of southern Serik-Akseki-Manavgat townships to eradicate the other group.

    Security forces on Friday killed seven terrorists from the separatist organization in an operation which they staged acting on a tip off that there were terrorists in mountainous and foresty region on Kapaklitepe in Demircilier village in Serik towship and three other terrorists were killed in Gulendag region in Halitagalar village in Manavgat township.

    Genderma officials said ''Tendurek Group'' of the separatist terrorist organization was eradicated with Friday's operation.

    Officials said they took a tip off that there were 23 other terrorists in the region adding that operations were underway to capture these.

    Officals said the terrorists could not shelter in the region as they lost logistic support.

    [09] GUNFIRE OPENED TO MILITARY HELICOPTER IN SIRNAK PROVINCE - A VILLAGE GUARD IN THE HELICOPTER DIES

    SIRNAK, April 11 (A.A) - Terrorists from the separatist terrorist organization opened gunfire on a military helicopter in Besta region in Southeastern Sirnak province killing a village guard, it was reported on Saturday.

    The incident happened late on Friday when terrorists opened gunfire on a Skorsky type helicopter which brought security forces to the region of operation. The helicopter sustained some damage in the attack but later landed safely.

    The health conditions of the other security forces is not clear yet.

    Emergency Rule Regional Governor's office confirmed the incident yet added that they have not received any information about the number of deaths and wounded ones.

    [10] EXTREME NATIONALISTS AND FORMER COMMUNISTS IN BULGARIA REACT HARSLY TO THE RE-WRITING OF TURKISH-BULGARIAN HISTORY BOOKS JOINTLY

    SOFIA, April 11 (S.A) - Extreme nationalists and former communists in Bulgaria harsly reacted to the decision of the Education Ministries of Turkey and Bulgaria to re-write Turkish and Bulgarian history books by eradicating insulting words.

    Bulgarian extreme nationalists and former communists claimed that this initiative was a treachery to the country and wanted Veselin Metodiev, Bulgarian Education Minister to resign.

    Parliamentary group of Bulgarian Socialist Party, continuation of former Communist Party, issued a declaration and claimed that history books should be written with the national policy of each country adding that writing history books jointly with another country will distort patriotism feelings.

    Meanwhile, Metodiev, Bulgarian Education Minister said the reactions were meaningless. He said joint commissions, composed of the experts of all neighboring countries in Europe convene and review the texts of the history books and pointed out that ''it is very natural that we convene as Balkan countries to launch such initiatives.''

    Metodiev said their aim was not to change the history but to clear the history books from insulting expressions. Metodiev said ''we all want to live in peace and tranquility in the Balkans.''
