[02] OIL PRODUCTION IN SOUTHEASTERN ADIYAMAN PROVINCE - TPAO PRODUCES FIVE MILLION BARRELS OF OIL IN LAST FIVE MONTHS

GAZIANTEP, May 31 (A.A) - The Turkish Petroleums Corporation (TPAO) produced 5,38 million barrels of crude oil in the first five months of this year in southeastern Adiyaman province having the biggest oil reserves in the country, it was reported on Sunday.

The TPAO Regional Directorate officials told the A.A correspondent that the TPAO produces 61 percent of its total oil production in the country from 143 oil wells in 17 oil fields in Adiyaman, adding that the TPAO produces 33.5 thosand barrels of high-gravity oil from these wells per day.

The TPAO aims to increase the share of its production to 63 percent in this province.

The TPAO carries out oil research studies in southeastern Gaziantep province and in southern Hatay province while it makes test-production etudes in southeastern Sanliurfa and Kilis provinces.

[03] STATE MINISTER GUREL: '' WE LAUNCH EFFORTS TO PREVENT THE FINALIZATION OF THE DRAFT RESOLUTION BY THE FRENCH SENATE''

IZMIR, May 31 (A.A) - Sukru Sina Gurel, the State Minister said on Saturday that Turkey will launch efforts to prevent the finalization of the Draft Resolution on the socalled Armenian genocide by the French Senate.

Addressing a press briefing in Izmir, Gurel stated that ''if such a draft resolution becomes definite, the relations between France and Turkey will be overshadowed.''

Recalling that the approval of the French Senate is necessary for the finalization of this draft resolution, Gurel pointed out that Turkey does not expect the French Senate to approve this decision.

''There are people who are liable for the commencement of such a decision process. These people should know that they interrupt with the Turkish- French relations and should hold liability for that. We warn these people who are liable for the adoption of such a draft resolution by the parliament of a country, which we think she is friendly, and for distorting historical events by enmity and hatred against Turkey,'' said Gurel.

[04] AUTOMATIC PRICE FIXING FOR FUEL-OIL

ANKARA, May 31 (A.A) - The officials from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources asked the government to immediately give the start for the automatic pricing of fuel-oil products in order to restrain the imports of these products and to increase the refinery capacity.

The Ministry officials told the A.A correspondent that the automatic price fixing system is necessary to provide liberalization in the sector.

The system, which was planned to be implemented by the decision of the Council of Ministers of May 1, 1998, was postponed to July 1, 1998 on grounds that ''the imports of fuel-oil from the European Union (EU) are exempted from customs-duties while the refineries are charged with customs- duties for the imports of crude oil from other countries, and these implementations cause unfair competition.''

Then, the imports of oil and oil products were exempted from all of the customs-duties by a legal arrangement and the loss of income was reflected in the fuel-oil sales taxes.

The officials stressed that the system would start before June 1998 when the unfair competition was removed, adding that the automatic pricing system would encourage Turkish and foreign entrepreneurs to invest in the sector.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources data showed that Turkey imported 23 million tonnes of crude oil for 3.4 billion US dollars in 1996 and spent 1.1 billion US dollars for the imported oil products of 5 million tonnes.

Turkey produces annually 25.5 million tonnes of oil in the Batman, Izmit, Izmir-Aliaga, Mersin-Atas and Kirikkale refineries while the annual consumption of Turkey is 30.5 million tonnes.

In these refineries, a total of 1.2 million tonnes of premium fuel; 1.9 million tonnes of regular grade; 254 thousand tonnes of unleaded petrol; 1 million tonnes of jet propulsion fuel; 7.2 million tonnes of diesel fuel; 1.5 million tonnes of central heating fuel; 7.3 million tonnes of fuel-oil (industrial fuel), 1.1 million tonnes of asphalt and 777 thousand tonnes of liquid petroluem gas (LPG) were produced as of the end of 1996.

Turkey the same year imported 128 thousand tonnes of high octane fuel; 597 thousand tonnes of regular grade; 271 thousand tonnes of jet propulsion fuel; 1.5 million tonnnes of diesel fuel; 419 thousand tonnnes of central heating fuel; 1.7 million tonnes of LPG and 189 thousand tonnes solvent.

[05] GREEK CYPRIOT MOTORCYCLISTS VIOLATE TRNC BORDER AGAIN

LEFKOSA, May 31 (A.A) - Greek Cypriot motorcyclists violated again the border which separates the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) from the Greek Cypriot side near Guvercinlik village of Gazimagusa province, it is reported on Saturday.

TRNC Security Forces Press Office said that two Greek Cypriots violated the border for 100-150 meters in spite of the warnings of the Turkish soldiers. The Greek Cypriots on the motorbikes escaped to the Greek Cypriot side after the Turkish soldiers opened fire on the air two times.

TRNC Military officials protested the incident before the UN Peace Forces and British officials, who also confirmed the violation of the border by the Greek Cypriot motorcyclists.

Greek Cypriot motorcyclists violated the border on August 1996 in Derinya region near Gazimagusa and caused bloody accidents at the border where two Greek Cypriots died.
