  • [01] STATE MINISTER GUREL IN THE TRNC - TRNC PRESIDENT DENKTAS RECEIVES GUREL

    LEFKOSA, June 13 (A.A) - Sukru Sina Gurel, the State Minister, came on Friday to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to attend the 22nd International TRNC Industry Fair.

    Addressing the journalists at the airport, Gurel said that he will hold talks with the senior officials during his visit to the TRNC. He stressed that the Turkish people are ready to support the Turkish Cypriots in every field.

    Welcoming Gurel, Dervis Eroglu, the Prime Minister of the TRNC, noted that they will discuss the latest devolopments on the island with Gurel.

    Meanwhile President Rauf Denktas of the TRNC received Gurel and the accompanying delegation.

    Addressing the meeting Denktas pointed out that Turkish Cypriots are hopeful about their future, and thanked Turkey for her support.

    [02] DRAFT RESOLUTION ABOUT THE SO-CALLED GENOCIDE ON ARMENIANS - FRANCE EXPRESSES REGRET WITH THE TURKEY'S DECISION

    PARIS, June 13 (A.A) - French officials expressed regret over Turkey's decision concerning the postponement of the defence industry tenders.

    Addressing a press conference, Yves Doutriaux, the Spokesman of the French Foreign Ministry, pointed out that France is determined to improve relations with Turkey.

    Doutriaux stressed that France wants to overcome misunderstandings between the two countries, noting that the draft resolution regarded with the so- called genocide on Armenians that caused reaction in Turkey, was presented by the parliament, not by the government.

    Responding to a journalist asking ''Does France think of retaliating Turkey's decision?'', Doutriaux said, ''Definitely no.''

    The draft resolution in question adopted by the French Parliament last month, foresees the recognition of the so-called genocide on Armenians in France.

    [03] UTKAN, SPOKESMAN OF THE FOREIGN MINISTRY, EXPRESSES SATISFACTION WITH THE MORATORIUM ANNOUNCEMENT OF PAKISTAN''

    ANKARA, June 13 (A.A) - Necati Utkan, the Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Turkey welcomed the Pakistan's announcement of moratorium on nuclear tests following the declaration of India.

    Utkan pointed out in his written statement that Turkey monitors closely the developments in the Southern Asia. He added, ''the last statements of Pakistan and India show that they don't want the tension to be escalated in the region''.

    Necati Utkan emphasized that Turkey expects India and Pakistan to find a peaceful solution to the dispute between them.

    [04] FLOOD DISASTER IN SANLIURFA - DEATH TOLL INCREASES TO NINE

    SANLIURFA, June 13 (A.A) - Death toll of people who were swept away by floods driven by torrential rains in Gozeli village in this southeastern province reached to nine. Searches are underway on Euphrates river to find seven others who were missing.

    Seventeen people from Okatan, Yilmaz and Gokcek families who came from Germany to have holiday were swept away by floods while they were having picnic.

    Ali Gokcek, 11 year old boy, was rescued by climbing on a tree.

    Efforts are underway to find seven people who are still missing.

    Meanwhile, Hasan Gemici, Minister of State went to the spot to hold observations.

    Sanliurfa is some 820 kilometers (490 miles) southeast of the capital, Ankara.

    Last month, floods sweeping northwestern Turkey killed some 20 people, inundated thousands of homes and destroyed bridges, roads and railway lines.

    [05] NATO MEETINGS - AMBASSADOR OYMEN: - ''TURKEY DOESN'T APPROVE VIOLENCE''

    BRUSSELS, June 13 (A.A) - Onur Oymen, the Turkey's Permanent Representative to the NATO who attended the some parts of the NATO Defence Ministers' meetings, said on Friday that Turkey supports diplomatic solution for the Kosovo problem, adding that there is a compromise between the allies on the issue.

    Addressing the meeting in the NATO Headquarters, Oymen stressed that the pressure and terror in Kosovo should be ended, and called the allies to not let Kosovo to become second Bosnia.

    Emphasizing that Turkey never approves of violance, Oymen said, ''the NATO's messages should not be interpreted as support for the supporters of violence''. He noted the importance of legal bases of the NATO's initiatives in Kosovo.

    Reminding the lessons of Bosnia, Oymen noted that the Kosovo problem became the first Article of the NATO's agenda. He pointed out that NATO attributes great importance to the solution of the Kosovo problem. He also noted that Turkey, as one of the most influential countries of the NATO, will fulfill her responsibilities to find a peaceful solution to the Kosovo problem.

    [06] S-300 MISSILES - TRNC PRESIDENT DENKTAS: ''THERE IS NO INFORMATION TO CONFIRM COMING OF THE MISSILES''

    LEFKOSA, June 13 (A.A) - Rauf Denktas, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said they did not have the information to confirm that S-300 missiles which the Greek Cypriot side purchased from Russia came to the Island.

    Responding to the questions of reporters on the issue Denktas said they would repond to it and take necessary measures if they receive such an information.

    Denktas pointed out that keeping the issue continously on the agenda was harmful stressing that required measures would be taken when they determine that missiles came.

    [07] ''TURKISH FILMS'' WEEK IN VIENNA - AUSTRIANS WATCH 12 AWARDED TURKISH FILMS

    VIENNA, June 13 (A.A) - ''Turkish Films'' week organized by the Culture, Art, Education and Science Association and XX-Films Company, began on Friday in Vienna. During the week, Votiv Cinema in Vienna will host the awarded 12 long feature Turkish films and 2 documertaries.

    Addressing the gala, Mujde Ar, a leading actress of Turkish cinema, said, ''I am proud of the Turkish films to be shown in

    Vienna, a city known as the center of culture an art''.

    The ''Turkish Films'' week began with the ''Master, Kill Me'' directed by Baris Pirhasan. The other films take part in the week are as follows:

    More than 15 thousand people watched the ''Brigand'' (Eskiya) of Yavuz Turgul in different parts of Austria in January.

    [08] EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT SPEAKERS' CONFERENCE - PARLIAMENT SPEAKER CETIN: ''EUROPEAN PARLIAMENTS SHOULD BE IN CLOSE COOPERATION IN STRUGGLE AGAINST TERRORISM''

    STOCKHOLM, June 13 (A.A) - Hikmet Cetin, currently in Stockholm to participate in European Parliament Speakers' Conference urged European parliaments to be in close cooperation on the issue of struggle against terrorism.

    Addressing the conference Cetin said parliaments, which are cornerstone of a democratic system, have very important roles to be played adding that Parliaments were the protectors of supremacy of law, human rights and freedoms.

    Stressing that taking up of terrorism issue was very important, Cetin said Turkey supported a decision of Council of Europe (COE) to stage an interparliamentarian meeting on terrorism issue.

    Cetin said ''also, drug trafficking, organized crime and racism are threats towards pluralist democracy and that they threaten stability of Europe.''

    Mentioning about the situation of immigrant workers in Europe, Cetin said they were lots of things to be done to preserve the rights of these people and to provide their integration with the community they are living in.

    Cetin said parliaments should not incite new tensions and clashes adding that ''we should work altogether to prevent new divisions in Europe.''

    [09] EVACUATION OF THE TURKISH WORKERS FROM ETHIOPIA - 147 TURKISH WORKERS COME TO ISTANBUL BY A PRIVATE PLANE

    ISTANBUL, June 13 (A.A) - The 147 Turkish people who work at the ENKA construction site, a Turkish firm, in Makale Province of Ethiopia which is fighting against Eritrea, came on Friday to Istanbul by a private plane hired form the Ethiopian Airways by the Foreign Ministry.

    Responding to the questions of the journalists at the Ataturk Airport, workers said that they are very pleased to be in Turkey. They noted that the construction site in Makale province was far away from the clash lines, therefore they have no detailed information about the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Workers pointed out that ENKA firm kept them in a shelter for four days against a possible attack.

    The Turkish workers who were evacuated to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, from Makale province by buses, stressed that Murat Bilhan, the Turkish Ambassador to Ethiopia, and embassy staff showed close interest in their problems.

    [10] HARSH RESPONSE FROM DENKTAS TO PANGALOS: ''HE REGARDS US AS THRACEAN TURKS HE SHOULD GO TO AN OCULIST''

    LEFKOSA, June 13 (A.A) - Rauf Denktas, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) reacted to Greek Foreign Minister Teodoros Pangalos who identified Turkish Cypriots as ''minority'' adding that ''Pangalos sees us like Thracean Turks.''

    Denktas reacted to the words of Pangalos who called him as a negotiator that lost credibility adding that Pangalos should go to an oculist if he could not see the facts in Cyprus question.

    Denktas also said a compromise in Cyprus could only be depended on the base of two states.

    [11] CITIZENSHIP LAW CHANGE IN GREECE - CHANGE CREATES DISAPPOINTMENT WITHIN TURKISH MINORITY

    KOMOTINI, June 13 (A.A) - Annul of Article 19 of the Citizenship Law in Greece caused disappointment within Turkish minority.

    Article 19 which was implemented on expelling of Western Thracian Turks from the citizenship in Greece was annuled with parliament's decision. The Article in question was used in expelling of 60,000 Western Thracian Turkish from citizenship since 1995.

    Mustafa Mustafa, Deputy of Left Alliance Party minority told A.A correspondent that many Western Thracian Turks were expelled from citizenship and that the wounds of the past were not healed as it did not cover the past.

    Galip Galip, PASOK Komotini Deputy said annul of Article 19 was a positive development yet added that it was regrettable that problems of the people who were earlier expelled could not be solved with this decision.

    [12] JOHNSTON, SECRETARY GENERAL OF OECD, DUE IN TURKEY ON SATURDAY

    ANKARA, June 13 (A.A) - Donald Johnston, the Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) will come to Turkey on Saturday.

    Johnston will join in the dinner that will be given in his honour by Rahmi Koc, the Chairman of the Administrative Board of Koc Holding on Saturday night.

    Donald Johnston will proceed to Ankara after he visiting Topkapı Museum and Dolmabahce Palace in June 14. He will address the conference ''The OECD and the Challenges Caused by the Globalism'' in Bilkent University on June 15. He is expected to come together with Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister, and Gunes Taner, the State Minister at the same day.

    Johnston is also scheduled to meet with Zekeriya Temizel, the Finance Minister. President Suleyman Demirel will receive Johnston in June 16. Donald Johnston will leave Turkey on June 17.

    [13] NATIONAL DAY OF RUSSIAN FEDERATION - PRESIDENT DEMIREL PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL DAY RECEPTION OF RUSSIA

    ANKARA, June 13 (A.A) - President Suleyman Demirel participated in a reception which was staged for the eight National Day of Russian Federation.

    President Demirel met Russian Ambassador Vadim Kuznetsov for half an hour in the reception.

    Speaking to reporters after the meeting Demirel said he made a visit of courtesy to Kuznetsov.

    Vadim Kuznetsov, Russian Federation Ambassador said he did not details about the delivery of the S-300 missiles which Greek Cypriot side would purchase from Russia.

    Responding to the news reports that S-300 missiles were deployed in Greek Cypriot Side, Kuznetsov said ''it is very natural right of Greek Cypriot side to meet its defense requirements. These are all of defense aims and do not threaten security of other countries. Also, we have many times said S- 300 missiles was a trade issue.''

    Noting that Russian Rosvoorijeniye company would abide by its contact, Kuznetsov said he did not know the details of the delivery.

    Kuznetsov said natural gas, energy power plants, modernization of iron and steel factories and shopping centers that will be opened in Russia were taken up during his meeting with Demirel.

    Kuznetsov also said Russian natural gas company Gazprom would open office in Ankara.
