    HURRIYET (LIBERAL) MHP SAYS 'OK' TO ECEVIT
    The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairmanship Council decided to say 'yes' to the coalition proposal of Bulent Ecevit, the leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP). The majority of the members of the MHP confirmed starting negotiations for a coalition government with the DSP while Sadi Somuncuoglu and Saffet Cetin opposed to forming a government with the DSP.

    700TH ANNIVERSARY PRAYER FROM MUTAFIAN,
    PATRIARCH OF TURKISH ARMENIANS
    Mesrob Mutafian, the Patriarch of the Turkish Armenians, visited the Tomb of Fatih the Conquerer, who set up an Armenian Patriarchate in 1461. Mutafian and the members of the Clerical Assembly prayed for Fatih the Conquerer. Mutafian said that they commemorate those days with gratitute.

    BAYKAL'S TIME ENDS, NOW IT IS OYMEN'S TURN
    Both the Congress and the electors rejected Deniz Baykal, the former leader of the Republican Peoples' Party (CHP). Altan Oymen was elected as the leader of CHP in the third tour. Deniz Baykal who caused the CHP not to pass the 10 percent national barrier in the recent elections gave up his candidacy when he learnt the reactions against him during the nineth extraordinary congress meeting of CHP which was held yesterday. Altan Oymen won 521 votes, while his rival Hasan Fehmi Gunes won 508 votes.

    MHP ACCEPTS COALITION WITH DSP
    The Chairmanship Council of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) decided to start negotiations for a coalition among DSP, MHP and ANAP. It has been reported that DSP leader Bulent Ecevit's voting for Sami Somuncuoglu, the candidate of MHP for the Parliament Speakership has been effective for MHP to take this decision.

    EXPRESS HELP TO HAGIA SOPHIA
    American Express company donated 100,000 U.S. dollars for the second time for the restoration of the Hagia Sophia Museum in Istanbul. Addressing a speech in the ceremony which was held for this donation, Istemihan Talay, the Culture Minister, said that the participants in the ceremony are concious that the cultural values and the monuments of the world are a common heritage.

    A CHIEF VILLAGE GUARD KILLED IN EASTERN VAN PROVINCE
    A group of terrorists staged an armed attack to the house of a chief village guard in eastern Van province. The village guards on duty had a hot clash with the terrorists for twenty minutes. A village guard was killed and one other was injured while a terrorist died when the hand grenade on him exploded.

    BOMB ATTACK IN MALTEPE DISTRICT OF ISTANBUL
    Unidentified assailants hurled a hand grenade against a workplace in Maltepe district of Istanbul, causing financial damages.

    DSP'S CONDITION IS NATIONAL EDUCATION
    The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) gave a positive response to the coalition proposal of Bulent Ecevit, the leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP). Ecevit will now meet with Mesut Yilmaz, the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP) and will propose a coalition government formed by DSP-MHP-ANAP. It is said that the bargainings will take place regarding the distribution of the National Education Ministry and the Interior Ministry.

    PROMISE OF ALIYEV, AZERBAIJANI PRESIDENT, FOR BAKU-CEYHAN
    Haydar Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, wished congratulations to Bulent Ecevit, the leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) in forming the government and said that the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline will start to be constructed not later than three months.

    NINE DIE WHEN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS OF IRAQI AND IRANIAN ORIGIN DO NOT ABIDE
    WITH WARNING OF SECURITY FORCES
    Nine illegal immigrants of Iraqi and Iranian origin died when they did not abide with the warning of the Turkish security forces while trying to enter Turkey through illegal ways from the triangle among Baskale, Saray counties of eastern Van province. Five immigrants were injured while 36 immigrants were captured. The injured immigrants are under treatment and the interrogation of 36 immigrants are underway.

    ANAP IS WINNER IN LOCAL ELECTIONS
    The Motherland Party won 780 municipilaties and became the winner in the local elections which were held on April 18, 1999. The True Path Party (DYP) with 736 and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) with 500 municipalities followed the ANAP. The Virtue won 488 municipalities, the Republican People's Party (CHP) won 369, the Democratic Left Party 188 and the Peoples' Democracy Party (HADEP) won 37 municipalities.

    CITIZENS AWAKEN
    Rather than hoping the government to solve their problems, the non- governmental organizations (NGOs) also got organized in districts of cities. Some of the citizens living in these districts found associations or stay as groups of initiatives.

    REVOLT AGAINST ANKARA
    Nearly 300 businessmen who came together in Sanlıurfa province revolted against the extension of the formation of a government while there were urgent problems waiting to be solved. Miras, the Chairman of Turkish Union of Chambers and Stock Exchanges (TOBB) said that those businessmen who give taxes have to call politicians to account for that.

    MHP SAYS ''YES''
    Tunca Toskay, the Deputy Leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) said on Saturday after the MHP Chairmanship Council meeting that they've evaluated in many aspects the proposal offered to them by Bulent Ecevit, the leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) requesting their entrance in the coalition government, adding ''Our Chairmanship Council has found appropriate the commencement of negotiations with the parties which are likely to join the coalition for the formation of a coalition government.'' Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the MHP will hold a press briefing today regarding the issue.

    PATRIARCH:WE ARE GRATEFUL TO FATIH SULTAN MEHMET
    Mesrob Mutafian, the Patriarch of Turkish Armenians and the members of the Clerical Council visited on Saturday the Tomb of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, the Ottoman ruler upon the 538th foundation anniversary of the Patriarchy by Fatih. Issuing a statement to journalists after visiting the mosque, Mutafian said that Fatih Sultan Mehmet invited the Armenian patriarch in Bursa province to Istanbul after conquering Istanbul in 1453 and founded a Patriarchate in Istanbul for the Armenian society living under the rule of Ottomans which is not connected to the Byzantine Church, adding they are grateful to him.

    ALBANIAN PRESIDENT:SOLUTION FOR KOSOVO IS INDEPENDENCE
    Addressing to the newspaper, Albanian President Meydani said that independence has to be given to Kosovo rather than proposing interim solutions there. Stressing that Turkish schools in Albania give a very successful education, Meydani said that his son was also a graduate of one of these schools.

    [02] PREMIER ECEVIT VISITS ALIYEV, AZERBAIJANI PRESIDENT - ALIYEV: ''LET'S DEVELOP BY BEING HAND IN HAND WITH TURKEY'' - ECEVIT: ''RELATIONS BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES HAVE GAINED NEW DIMENSIONS IN ENERGY SECTOR''

    ANKARA, May 23 (A.A) - Premier Bulent Ecevit visited Haydar Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan who is paying a visit to Ankara, on Saturday.

    Aliyev congratulated Ecevit for the results of the April 18 elections and said that they believe that President Suleyman Demirel and Ecevit will develop Turkey more and more in this new period.

    Stressing that they want Turkey to remain powerful, Aliyev noted that Turkey and Azerbaijan should be hand in hand and develop together.

    Informing Ecevit about the developments regarding the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project, Aliyev stated that the problems which occur in the pipeline due to the protocol that was earlier signed in Istanbul, will be solved in three months.

    Bulent Ecevit stressed that the relations between the two countries have gained new dimensions with the steps taken in the energy sector, adding that he is very pleased to see Aliyev in Turkey.

    Responding the questions of the journalists about the formation of the new government, following the meeting; Ecevit said that he thinks that the statement which was issued after the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairmanship Council meeting was very pleasing.

    Stating that the initiatives to form the new government can immediately be launched after this statement, Ecevit emphasized that he will ask Mesut Yilmaz, the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP) for an appointment, following the statement of Devlet Bahceli, the leader of MHP, which is expected to be issued on Sunday.

    Ecevit said that he hopes that a long-term government can be formed as soon as possible.

    [03] 538TH ANNIVERSARY OF ESTABLISHMENT OF TURKISH ARMENIANS PATRIARCHATE

    ISTANBUL, May 23 (A.A) - Mesrob Mutafian, the Patriarch of Turkish Armenians, said on Saturday that the establishment of a spiritual presidency office for the members of another religion by a ruler who is a member of another religion, is seen neither before Fatih the Conquerer nor after him.

    Addressing a speech in the reception which was held for the 538th anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Armenians Patriarchate, Mutafian noted that Fatih the Conquerer's converting the Armenian Patriarchate in Western Anatolia to Istanbul Patriarchate by an order is a clear example of the tolerance which the Ottoman sultans showed to other religions.

    Mutafian stated that everybody in the world has a common longing for a world which is respectful to the human life and the individual rights and liberties and a world which is remote from any kind of violence, in the threshold of the third millenium.

    Emphasizing that the establishment of the Armenian Patriarchate is a unique event in the history, Mutafian stressed that everybody can understand the importance of the establishment of their Patriarchate and the importance of the tolerance among religions and the cultures when crisis and wars in the world are taken into consideration.

    Mutafian pointed out that they commemorate Fatih the Conquerer, who permitted Armenian society to live in accordance with their traditions, and the 83 Armenian patriarchs who worked until their patriarchate was established, with gratitude.

    Meanwhile, Turkish Armenians held a religious ceremony in Mother Mary Patriarchate Church in Kumkapi district of Istanbul.

    [04] AKINCI, TRNC DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER: - ''WE CONTINUE OUR STRUGGLE TO RE- GAIN USURPED RIGHTS OF TRNC''

    ISTANBUL, May 23 (A.A) - Mustafa Akinci, the Deputy Prime Minister and the State Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said on Saturday that they continue their struggle to re-gain the usurped rights of the TRNC; adding that their rightfullness will be accepted one day.

    Addressing a speech in the opening ceremony of TRNC handicrafts exhibition, Akinci noted that the exhibition will contribute to the improvement of the cultural relations between Turkey and the TRNC and that it will help the introduction of the TRNC handicrafts in Turkey.

    Akinci stressed that the TRNC has been struggling against economic embargos since it was established.

    Akinci stated that they decided to renew their aircraft fleet.

    Stressing that the TRNC opened its 101th touristic installation, Akinci emphasized that the touristic bed numbers reached nearly 10,000.

    Akinci pointed out that the TRNC has made giant leap forward in education sector and that they left the Greek Cypriot side behind in this sector.

    [05] CDA SHOWS NIHAT ESKI, TURKISH JOURNALIST LIVING IN NETHERLANDS, AS A CANDIDATE TO EP

    TOSYA, May 23 (A.A) - The Christian Social Democratic Party (CDA) showed Nihat Eski, the Turkish journalist living in the Netherlands, as a candidate to the European Parliament (EP) on Sunday.

    Speaking with the A.A correspondent on the phone, Eski said that he was shown as a candidate by the CDA for the EP elections which will be held on June 10, 1999.

    Stressing that he believes he will be elected as a deputy by the support of the three million Turks who are living in the European Union (EU) countries, including the Netherlands and Germany; Eski noted that Turks are today an indispensible part of the European countries.

    Stating that the Turks who set up the biggest foreign society in Europe have some demands, expectations and requests from the European countries where they are living, Eski stressed that they should work for the realization of their demands and requests by directly participating in political arena.

    Noting that the Turks who are living in Europe should be represented in all of the institutions of the country where they live, Eski emphasized that two Turkish representatives managed to be elected as deputies to the Dutch parliament last year.

    Eski pointed out that more than 100 Turks managed to get in the local governments; adding that he will become the representative of the three million Turks by being elected to the European Parliament.

    Nihat Eski was born in 1963. He completed his primary and secondary education in Tosya county of northern Kastamonu province. After graduating from the university, Eski settled in the Netherlands. Eski worked for many years in Consultancy Council for Turks. Nowadays, Eski is working as a director in ''SOM Media'' institution, which broadcasts television programs for the foreigners living in the Netherlands.

    [06] PRESIDENT DEMIREL: ''I HOPE GOVERNMENT TO BE FORMED SOON''

    ANKARA, May 23 (A.A) - President Suleyman Demirel said on Sunday that he hoped the formation of the government soon, adding ''I would like to hope that several difficulties have been overcome now.''

    Hosting a lunch in the honour of Haydar Aliyev, the Azerbaijani President who rests in Turkey, President Demirel responded to a question asking ''the contacts aiming at forming the government has re-started by your efforts. How do you evaluate the situation today?''

    ''I am not the one who will establish the government, I only wish the government to be formed soon. I assigned Mr. Ecevit to form the government, he launches efforts to this end. If the government is formed in the coming few days, the parliament will start to work and the worries will end in Turkey. Thus the process will end by the elections held on April 18, the announcement of the elections' result, oath-taking ceremony in the parliament, the election of the Parliament Speaker and formation of the government,'' President Demirel said.

    [07] PRESIDENT DEMIREL: ''WE EXTEND ALL KINDS OF SUPPORT TO AZERBAIJAN AND WILL CONTINUE TO GIVE SUPPORT''

    ANKARA, May 23 (A.A) - President Suleyman Demirel said on Sunday that Turkey gives all kinds of support to Azerbaijan and will continue to give support from now on.

    Speaking in the luncheon which Demirel hosted for the honour of Haydar Aliyev, the Azerbaijani President, Demirel noted that he is very pleased to host Aliyev in Turkey.

    Emphasizing that the relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan are very good, Demirel stated that Azerbaijan developed under the will of Aliyev since she gained her independence and that she became an important country among all the world countries.

    Stressing the Karabakh issue, Demirel said, ''there is the Karabakh issue which makes all of us sorry. Nearly one and a half million Azeris had to leave their homes and country. They are still in the position of immigrants. Azerbaijan continues to find a peaceful solution with all her bona fide and calmness.''

    ''We also support a peaceful solution. We hope that a peaceful solution is realized and all these pains will end. And our brothers who had to leave their homes can return back to their places,'' Demirel added.

    Stating that Azerbaijan faced not only these sorrowful events but also injustice, Demirel emphasized that the most important injustice Azerbaijan faces is the U.S. embargo.

    Demirel stressed that Azerbaijan continues to develop and improve and that she also made a giant leap forward in oil and gas issue.

    Demirel said, ''we hope that Azerbaijan will become one of the important countries in the world in a few years. Thus, I hope that Azerbaijan will reach the sources which are necessary to re-develop and improve herself.''

    Pointing out that to this end, the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline will be constructed, Demirel said, ''on one hand, the oil in the Central Asia and the Caspian Basin will be safely transferred to the world. On the other hand, the raw resources of Azerbaijan will be processed. The pipeline will pass through the Caspian Sea and reach Turkey via Georgia. Later, it will reach the European markets via Turkey. These projects are in effect. We support Azerbaijan as much as possible and will continue to support her.''

    ''We hope that Karabakh dispute which makes Azerbaijan uneasy will be solved in accordance with the international laws. We appreciate the patience of Azerbaijan in this issue. That is, Azerbaijan faces pain to overcome this issue with dialogue rather than fight and showed a great patience,'' Demirel added.

    Thanking Turkey for her friendship and help to Azerbaijan, Aliyev also pointed out to the efforts and support of Demirel in solving the Karabakh dispute.

    Aliyev said that he hopes that they will solve this dispute and that they are living in ceasefire for five years; adding that living in ceasefire is better than living in war.

    Stressing that the world goes to peace, Aliyev noted that they should carry out efforts to peacefully solve this dispute.

    Reiterating that the most important part of the line in the transfer of the Caspian oil is Baku-Ceyhan line, Aliyev stressed that they faced many problems in Baku-Ceyhan issue and will start the construction of the pipeline in the shortest time.
