The Anadolu Ajansi does not verify these stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.HURRIYET (LIBERAL)ECEVIT: ''SOME MISTAKES OCCURRED IN UMUT OPERATION'' Premier Bulent Ecevit said that some statements made during the investigation stage of Umut (Hope) operation, confused the minds. Ecevit said, ''it is necessary to be patient to learn truths. What is important is that we revealed the organization which committed these murders.''FORMER DOSSIERS ON AGENDA Everybody who were interrogated before 1980, can be taken into custody in any moment. Many people who were sentenced to punishments a quarter of a century ago and who served his or her punishments, who were detained and later released, against whom warrants of arrest were issued, started to be detained unexpectedly. Many citizens who had to go to the police station, who applied to the police organizations to get passport or driving licence, who went to the border gates to go abroad, were taken into custody again. The police said that the former dossiers were loaded on the computers and claimed that the problems result from the attitude of the court halls, prisons or prosecutors that did not inform the police organizations about the result of the lawsuit filed against people. MILLIYET (LIBERAL)A NEW PAGE WITH DAMASCUS President Ahmet Necdet Sezer who did not attend the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit in Iranian capital of Tehran, will go to Syrian capital of Damascus to attend funeral of President Hafez Al-Assad. President Sezer's decision to attend the funeral is commented as an important development with regard to relations between Turkey and Syria, and the Middle East peace process.YILMAZ REFERRED TO CONSTITUTIONAL COURT FOR THE SECOND TIME The Parliamentary Investigation Commission decided to refer former Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and former Transportation and Communications Minister Necdet Menzir to the Constitutional Court on charges of ''causing the state to suffer damage by misusing the authority by violating the rules and principles of Privatization Law in the contracts signed with Telsim and Turkcell companies.'' Following its meeting, Commission's Chairman Mehmet Nacar said that they had decided to refer Yilmaz and Menzir to the Constitutional Court with seven votes against six. TOFAS WITHDRAWS FROM FIRST-LEAGUE AND SUPROLEAGUE TOFAS Sports Club, winners of the last two first-league championships, said that its basketball team withdrew from the first-league and the suproleague. Issuing a statement, the Club said, ''the reason for withdrawal was to move toward amateur youth basketball. Tofas left the professional scene.'' The statement said the club had decided to focus on amateur field. ''This decision was taken as it was believed that Tofes achieved its targets in professional field. Tofas targeted to serve amateur youth basketball. We will continue to contribute to Turkish sports,'' it said. SABAH (LIBERAL)SUITCASES FILL UP IN LALELI AGAIN Laleli market which had almost half of Turkey's export income five years ago, started to get revitalized again after going through difficult time in the last few years. The shuttle trade brought Laleli only 2 billion 225 million U.S. dollars last year. This year, the shuttle trade is expected to bring 4 billion U.S. dollars by the end of the year.THY HOPING FOR A GOOD SEASON Turkish Airlines (THY) did not have a good start in 2000. Its losses in the first three months of the year total up to 32.46 trllion TL. THY is hoping to recover from this situation during the summer. THY Chairman Cem Kozlu said the situation does not worry them. ''Airlines and tourism companies do not make much profit in the first three months of the year. We believe that things will get better in the coming months,'' he said. THY is targeting a turnover of 1.7 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2000. CUMHURIYET (LEFT)ILO REPORTS SHOW THAT TURKEY INDIFFERENT TO AGRICULTURE Since 1919, Turkey has signed only nine out of the 35 International Labour Organization's (ILO) international agreements which set standards in agriculture sector. Among the agreements which Turkey did not sign, there are Social Security for Agriculture Workers, Compansation Agreemeent (No: 12), Organizations in Rural Areas, Medical Care and Disease Agreement and Protection of Mothers.SEZER GOING TO SYRIA President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will attend the funeral of Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad on Tuesday. The Foreign Ministry had earlier told the government that Turkey's representation at funerel on deputy prime ministerial level would be appropriate because Al-Assad supported terrorist organization PKK for many years. However Sezer decided to attend the funeral due to bettering relations between Turkey and Syria. RADIKAL (LEFT)THREE EARTHQUAKES AND AN AFTERSHOCK Mild earthquakes occurred in the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea and western Aydin province. Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory Seismology Institute said that an earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale was recorded offshore Alanya township of southern Antalya province at 01:43 a.m. on Monday. A slight earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale jolted Soke township of Aydin province at 03:01 a.m. while a 3.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea at 05:54 a.m. Meanwhile, an aftershock measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in Cerkes township of central Cankiri province at 02:31 a.m.TENDER FOR AKKUYU NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Westinghouse Consortium bidding for the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant tender opened by the Turkish Electricity Production and Transmission Corp. (TEAS), extended the bidding period for the last time. The Westinghouse Consortium said in a letter sent to the TEAS on May 12 that they would fulfil TEAS's request regarding extension of bidding period till July 24. TEAS requested three consortia to extend the period without making any change in their bids on April 21. YENİ BİNYIL (LIBERAL)TO ARCHEOLOGISTS: ''UNITE!'' All the archeologists in Turkey were called on to leave aside all their excavations for three months and carry out excavations in ancient Zeugma site which will remain under the waters of Birecik Dam. Zeugma became the focal point of the struggle for preserving the history. Archeologists, jurists, and historians who spoke in the meeting on ''Today Zeugma, Tomorrow Hasankeyf... And then where?'', complained that the cultural heritage is not preserved and called on all the non-governmental organizations to launch initiatives to preserve the historical and cultural heritage. Orhan Silier, the Secretary General of History Foundation, called on all the archeologists to carry out excavations in Zeugma for three months.START TO PRIVATIZATION OF TELEKOM State Minister Recep Onal said that the tender process for 20 percent block sale of Turk Telekom will start on Tuesday and end in September 2000. Responding to the questions of the journalists on the people who had earlier deposited their money to the off-shore banks, Onal said, ''the concerned bank will pay the money of the people who had deposited their money to the off-shore banks. If that bank cannot pay the money bank, it will take advance money from the fund.'' TURKIYE (RIGHT)TURGUTREIS FRIGATE IN CHINA TCG Turgutreis Frigate of the Turkish Naval Forces arrived at the Shanghai Port in the People's Republic of China. A Turkish military vessel is visiting the People's Republic of China for the first time. A group of crew will visit the Naval Base Commendership, the Shanghai Municipality and the TV Tower. The TCG Turgutreis Frigate will depart from Shanghai on June 14. The frigate which set sail from Golcuk on April 24, visited Port Said in Egypt, Djibouti, Madras Port in India, Singapore and Japan before arriving in Shanghai.GENERAL BASER: ''TURKEY'S IMPORTANCE INCREASED'' General Edip Baser, the Deputy Chief of General Staff, said, ''Turkey's responsibilities and importance increased after the Cold War era.'' STFA CONSTRUCTION WINS TENDER IN QATAR STFA Construction Corp. won a tender for port construction and installation in Ras Laffan, Qatar, which was put out by General Petroleum Corporation. The company won the tender worth of 11 million 613,000 U.S. dollar among eight companies. TABA DELEGATION LEAVES FOR THE U.S. The Turkish-American Businessmen's Association (TABA) delegation headed by Dr. Zeynel Abidin Erdem, left for the U.S. to attend the European-American Chambers of Commerce Union meeting in Washington, D.C. The TABA delegation will hold talks in order to further improve commercial relations between Turkey and the U.S. ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)MILITARY VEHICLE CRASHES INTO CAR: ONE SOLDIER DIES One soldier died and five people, including one soldier, were injured as a military vehicle crashed into a car in Yildizeli township of central Sivas province. The military vehicle which was en route from Sivas to Tokat, crashed into a car which was going on the opposite side of the road. Non-commissioned soldier Bulent Karadol, who was driving the car, died at the spot.8TH FIVE-YEAR PLAN DISCUSSED IN PARLIAMENT Industry and Trade Minister Ahmet Kenan Tanrikulu said that they expect that the Gross National Product (GNP) which is around 3,000 U.S. dollars in 2000, will increase to 4,300 U.S. dollars in 2005. Tanrikulu submitted the 8th Five-Year Development Plan to the Parliamentary Planning and Budget Commission. Tanrikulu said that they foresee to reach the Masstrict criteria in this five-year term. [02] TUZLA DEPUTY MAYOR EKMEKCI DIES IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTISTANBUL - Tuzla Deputy Mayor Ihsan Ekmekci who had a traffic accident on Monday night died in the Kartal State Hospital early Tuesday. Ekmekci's official automobile had crushed into another vehicle on E-5 highway in Istanbul's Maltepe district overnight.[03] EARTHQUAKE IN MEDITERRANEAN SEAISTANBUL - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale occurred in the Mediterranean Sea at 04:43 a.m. on Tuesday. Officials at Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory Seismology Institute told the A.A correspondent that the earthquake was centered on the Mediterranean Sea. Meanwhile, an aftershock measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale jolted Cerkes township of central Cankiri province at 06:49 a.m.[04] FOREIGN TRADE UNDERSECRETARY TUZMEN: ''WE HAVE TO INCREASE THE TRADING VOLUME WITH OUR NEIGHBOURS FROM 5 PERCENT TO 15 PERCENT''IZMIR - Foreign Trade Undersecretary Kursat Tuzmen said on Tuesday that Turkey has to increase its trading volume with its neighbours from 5 percent to 15 percent. Tuzmen told A.A correspondent that the commercial relations with not only Iraq, Syria and Iran, but also with Greece, Russia, and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) member countries will be promoted. Turkey will reach the targets of 2000 in foreign trade, Tuzmen noted. Tuzmen said, ''the foreign trade figures of Turkey increased 4.5 percent this year when compared with the previous year. We will reach 28-29 billion U.S. dollars in foreign trade this year.'' Tuzmen added, ''the advantage of Turkey is labour force. If we can utilize the labour force which can use the technology and which is well-educated, together with the enterprises around the world, we can see the effects of this utilization in our trading volume.''[00] AN ISRAELI DELEGATION DUE IN TURKEYANKARA- A high-level Israeli delegation will visit Turkey to hold contacts regarding water purchase from Turkey. Diplomatic sources told A.A correspondent on Tuesday that the Israeli delegation headed by Israeli Infrastructure Ministry Undersecretary, will arrive in Istanbul on June 19. The diplomatic sources said that the delegation will later go to southern Manavgat township and then proceed to Ankara. A high-ranking official of the Israeli Embassy in Ankara said that contacts regarding the water purchase had earlier been held between Turkey and Israel, and that many Israeli delegations had paid a visit to Turkey within this framework. The high-ranking official noted that this time, the Israeli delegation is very crowded and that this is the indicator of the importance that Israel attributes to this issue. The delegation will include private consultant of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Israeli Foreign Ministry's Water Works Department Chairman, and high-ranking officials of the Finance Ministry, Health Ministry, and state water works institution Makerot, the diplomatic sources said. The diplomatic sources stated that this visit is within the framework of the decision that Israeli government took on December 17, 1999 saying that Israel will search for possibilities to purchase water from Turkey. Same sources stressed that the delegation will prepare a report to be submitted to the Israeli cabinet following their contacts and that this report will be effective in taking decisions regarding water purchase. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry defends that Israel should solve its water problem by purchasing water from Turkey. However, the Israeli Infrastructure Ministry prefers purifying sea water than purchasing water from Turkey. Sources said that the Foreign Ministry considers Israel's purchasing water from Turkey as a key that will solve the water problem between Israel and its neighbours. The Foreign Ministry thinks that as the Manavgat water is transferred to Jordan and Palestine, the water problem, one of the most severe issues of the peace process, can be overcome. The Israeli Infrastructure Ministry claims that the water resources should totally be under the control of Israel by taking into consideration every possibility. The Israeli Infrastructure Ministry also takes into consideration the ''effects of exported water on the wallet of Israeli citizens'' and rejects to consider this issue as a diplomatic one.[05] OPERATIONS AGAINST TERRORIST HEZBOLLAH ORGANIZATION NINE OUT OF 12 DETAINEES ARRESTEDDIYARBAKIR - The Diyarbakir State Security Court (DGM) arrested on Monday nine of 12 detainees who were taken into custody during operations against the terrorist Hezbollah organization in southeastern Diyarbakir province. Anti-Terrorism teams of Diyarbakir Security Department launched a series of operations between June 3-5 against the terrorist Hezbollah organization. They detained 12 people in the operations. The detainees were sent to the Diyarbakir DGM after their interrogation was completed. The Diyarbakir DGM released three of the detainees, and arrested nine of them.[06] FERRY CRUISES BETWEEN ANTALYA AND GIRNE TO START ON JUNE 15ANTALYA - Ferry cruises between southern Antalya province and Girne province of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will start on June 15. Erhan Ozkan, the Chairman of the Executive Board of Fen-er Travel Agency, told A.A correspondent on Tuesday that sea bus cruises were held between Antalya and Girne last year and that this year, they will launch ferry cruises due to the increasing demand. Ozkan said that ferry will leave Antalya for Girne on Mondays and Thursdays and will return from Girne to Antalya on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The ferry can carry 460 passengers, lorries, trucks and cars, Ozkan noted. The ferry can carry water, citrus fruits, cement, lime, bricks, Ozkan stated. Ozkan stressed that the return ticket of the ferry is 50 U.S. dollars. Ozkan said that the sea bus cruises which were launched between Antalya and Rhodes Island last year, will not be held this year. Mostly, the Russians were interested in the sea bus cruises to Rhodes Island last year, Ozkan noted. Ozkan added that since Greece imposed visa application for Russian tourist, they cancelled the cruises between Antalya and Rhodes Island.[07] SHOE BY-INDUSTRY FAIR TO BE OPENED ON JUNE 15ISTANBUL- ''23th International Shoe By-Industry Fair 2000'' will be opened in Istanbul on June 15. The leather and by-industry products, accessories, shoes, and machines used in this sector will be displayed in the fair. A total of 312 companies from Turkey, Italy, Germany, Greece, Spain, Britain, Taiwan, France, the U.S., Austria, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Finland, the Netherlands, and Portugal will participate in the fair. The fair will end on June 18.[08] HAZELNUT EXPORTS -633.2 MILLION U.S. DOLLARS OF HAZELNUTS EXPORTED SINCE SEPTEMBER 1, 1999TRABZON - Turkey has obtained 633 million 269 thousand U.S. dollars from her exports of hazelnuts since September 1, 1999 which was the first month of the 1999-2000 export year. Officials at the Black Sea Union of Hazelnut Exporters told the A.A correspondent on Tuesday that Turkey exported 182 thousand 65 tonnes of hazelnuts, and obtained an income of 633.2 million U.S. dollars. Turkey exports hazelnuts mainly to the European countries. In the same period of last year, Turkey had exported 160 thousand 511 tonnes of hazelnuts, and obtained an income of 659 million 269 thousand U.S. dollars.[09] PISTACHIO PRODUCERS ALSO JOIN DISCUSSIONS OVER FILLING OF BIRECIK DAMGAZIANTEP - Archeologists as well as non-governmental organizations asked the government to delay the filling of the Birecik Dam after the discovery of ancient mosaics that could rival those in the top museums in the world in the ancient Roman city of Zeugma in Gaziantep's Nizip township. Their request had been partly fulfilled when President Ahmet Necdet Sezer recently ordered a ten day delay to fill the dam. While the archeologists are asking for more time to finish their ''rescue excavations'', producers of pistachio came up with a different excuse. Nizip Agriculture Chamber Chairman Hanifi Karalar noted that the pistachio trees in the region which are currently full of pistachio will also be flooded if the dam starts filling. While archeologists and farmers are trying to delay the filling of the Birecik Dam, there are those who want to fill the dam and and start operating it immediately. Among them, there is a consortium which is formed by Turkish, German, Austrian, French and Belgian companies which constructed the Birecik Dam and Hydro Electric Central with build-operate-transfer model. Consortium's representatives are saying that a delay would cost them a loss of 30 million U.S. dollars, and noted that the Turkish government should pay them this amount in case of a delay. Nizip Mayor Coskun Ozkaya also thinks the dam should be filled immediately. Noting that Nizip has a water shortage, Ozkaya said the water should rise up to a certain level in the dam to distribute water to Nizip. He also said water shortage might result in some health problems in the area.[10] PRESIDENT SEZER LEAVES FOR SYRIAANKARA- President Ahmet Necdet Sezer left on Tuesday for Syrian capital of Damascus to attend funeral of Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad. Istemihan Talay, the Culture Minister, is accompanying President Sezer. Addressing journalists at the Esenboga Airport in Ankara prior to his departure, President Sezer said, ''I fulfil neighborhood responsibilties by conveying our condolences to the Syrian people at the funeral.'' President Sezer noted, ''demise of President Al-Assad who had served for stability and prosperity of Syria for years, is a grave loss for Syria. Turkey aims at further improving relations with neighboring Syria. I want to emphasize that we would maintain our good will to improve relations with Syria. We are ready to cooperate with new Syrian President to this end.'' President Sezer is expected to return to Turkey later on Tuesday.[11] YILMAZ, HEAD OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, DUE TO VATICANANKARA - Mehmet Nuri Yilmaz, the Head of the Religious Affairs, will leave for Vatican on Wednesday as the guest of Cardinal Francis Arinze, the Chairman of Papacy Inter-religious Dialogue Council. Issuing a written statement, the Directorate General of Religious Affairs said that Yilmaz and a seven-member delegation would pay a visit to Vatican within framework of the ''Inter-religious Dialogue and Solidarity Activities''. Yilmaz is scheduled to visit Etienne Renaud, the Rector of the Papacy Arabic and Islam Institute. He will meet with Cardinal Francis Arinze, the Chairman of Papacy Inter-religious Dialogue Council, on Thursday. Yilmaz will also visit Cardinal Achille Silvestrini, the Chairman of the Papacy Eastern Churches Congregation. Yilmaz will hold a meeting with Pope Jean Paul II on Friday. He is scheduled to meet with Jean-Louis Tauran, the Secretary for Relations with Other States.[12] SCULPTURES OF SAINTS NOW PRODUCED ALSO IN SELCUKSELCUK - Sculpture of saints which are kept in front yards of houses in many countries especially in the U.S. are now also being produced in Izmir's Selcuk township. Sevket Citak who started a business in his workshop in Selcuk is also making figurines of Mevlana and Pir Sultan Abdal and exporting them. Citak said he has worked as a moulder at construction sites for long years and he learnt how to make sculptures using moulding. In order to learn more about this profession, Citak said he went to the U.S. and worked at a workshop in California for sometime where he sharpened his skills and learnt about the subtleties of moulding. Upon his return, Citak set up his workship in Selcuk and started his own business. ''Turkey used to import these sculptures from abroad, mainly from the U.S. for non-Muslim families living in Turkey,'' Citak said. ''I showed a few examples of my work to those who deal with import and I started getting orders. My business grew in short time and I entered the U.S. market. I can now produce 1,500 to 2,000 sculptures by moulding system in one year.'' The sculptures vary between 50 and 100 centimeters. Citak said they can produce bigger ones about 150 centimeters as special orders. The sculptures cost between 20 to 40 U.S. dollars depending on their size. Citak noted that he is also making sculptures of Pir Sultan Abdal and Mevlana, saints who lived in Anatolia, and said he started getting orders for these also from abroad.[13] PARLIAMENT SPEAKER AKBULUT VISITS TURKISH PEACE FORCE IN TRNC AND TRNC SECURITY FORCES COMMANDERSHIPSLEFKOSA - Parliament Speaker Yildirim Akbulut visited on Tuesday the Turkish Peace Force Commandership in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the TRNC Security Forces Commandership. Akbulut firstly met with General Sukru Sariisik, the Commander of the Turkish Peace Force Commandership. Akbulut later came together with Ali Nihat Ozeyranli, the Commander of the Security Forces Commandership. Yildirim Akbulut said that the Turkish parliament will always be beside the Turkish Cypriots and that the Cyprus question can be solved as the existence of two equal states on the island is recognized. Akbulut later proceeded to the Bogaz Martrydom.[14] SOUTH AFRICA'S WESTERN CAPE STATE AGRICULTURE MINISTER: ''WE CAN COOPERATE WITH TURKEY IN HUSBANDRY, AND LEATHER AND AGRICULTURE SECTORS''IZMIR - Gerrit Van Rensburg, the Agriculture Minister of South Africa's Western Cape State, said on Tuesday that Turkey and South Africa can cooperate in husbandry, and leather and agriculture sectors. Rensburg, who visited western Izmir province to search for joint business opportunities, told a press conference that he visited the Menemen Leather Free Zone, the vineyards, greenhouses, and tobacco, cotton and grape enterprises and that he was very affected by what he saw. He believes that Turkey and South Africa can have fruitful cooperation and establish good relations, Rensburg noted. Rensburg stated that South Africa do not have the machines used in Turkey's leather industry. ''We have leather raw materials. We export them to Turkey. We can cooperate in leather industry and the machines used in this industry. South Africa is the mainland of ostrichs. The climate of the Aegean Region is suitable for ostrichs. Enterpreneurs of two countries can have business deals in ostrich breeding,'' Rensburg said. Rensburg added, ''since Turkey and South Africa are situated in different hemispheres, the seasons in two countries are different from each other. We can benefit from this difference and can export to Europe by mutual vegetable and fruit trade and cooperation.'' Rensburg stressed that the exchange of university students and teachers between two countries can have positive results. Tamer Taskin, South African Honorary Consul to Izmir, said that Rensburg's visit will contribute to the improvement of business deals between two countries. Taskin noted that the leather industrialists who work in Menemen Leather Free Zone and who imports leathers from South Africa, started to think of more comprehensive business deals with South Africa. Taskin added that they decided to pay a business visit to South Africa.[15] ONE DIES AS CHROME MINE COLLAPSES IN ELAZIGELAZIG - One worker died and another was injured on Tuesday as a chrome mine collapsed in Palu township of eastern Elazig province. Sources said that a private chrome quarry collapsed in Kayaonu village early on Tuesday morning, killing Resul Bayram, one of the workers. The sources added that Remzi Ciftci, who was seriously injured, was taken under medical treatment in a hospital in Elazig.[16] 200 TUMULUSES WAITING TO BE UNEARTHED IN HATAYADANA - About 200 tumuluses are waiting to be unearthed in the Mediterranean province of Hatay which hosted people from many cultures and religions throughout the history. So far archeologists detected about 200 tumuluses in Hatay. Excavations were carried out at six of these tumuluses between 1939 and 1948 and the pieces found were taken to Hatay Archaeology Museum. Excavations are presently continuing at Kurttevekkelli Tumulus in Reyhanli township and Kinet Tumulus in Dortyol township. An archeology team from Chicago University's Oriental Institute which has been digging in Kurttevekkeli Tumulus since 1995 will come back in August this year to work in Reyhanli. The team has so far found bottles, pans, seals and a house to store wheat during their excavations. The copper residue found in Kurttevekkelli Tumulus is considered to be an important sign indicating that people processed minerals in the paleolotic age. The team headed by Dr. Aslihan Yener is also carrying out surface research east of Amanos Mountains to confirm their findings. Another team from Bilkent University has been digging Kinet Tumulus under the supervision of Dr. Mary Gates since 1992. A third team from Ankara University headed by Prof. Ersin Gulec are working in Ucagizli Cave in Samandag every year in August or September.
