TURKISH PRESS REVIEWTUESDAY AUGUST 8, 1995Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish pressthis morning[01] CILLER URGES BONN TO BETTER PROTECT TURKSPrime Minister Tansu Ciller urged Germany yesterday to give better protection to Turks from a wave of firebomb attacks that she blamed on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Ciller acknowledged the efforts German police have made to counter arsonists who have hit dozens of Turkish properties over the past three weeks but said they had to do more. "A more resolute approach by security forces to move against the perpetrators and prosecuting them would have more of a deterrent impact" she told the newspaper Bild. "One may not allow Germany to become a paradise for criminals". Pointing out that cooperation between Turkey and Germany against terrorism should be strengthened, Ciller said that exradition of PKK members in Germany to Turkey would be a good start. /Hurriyet-Milliyet/
[02] FM INONU IN BELARUSForeign Minister Erdal Inonu opened talks with Belarussian leaders yesterday on the first day of his visit to this former Soviet Republic, with both sides trying to mend ties frozen since late 1994, when Minsk deported two Turkish diplomats for alleged spying. "I am here for a visit hoping to open a new era in our relations" Inonu told reporters at the Minsk airport. "Belarus is ready for boosting ties" Belarussian Foreign Minister Vladzimir Syanko said. At the meetings held between Inonu, Syanko and Prime Minister Mikhail Chigur, increasing trade and relations between the two countries were taken up. Asked if last year's incident still overshadowed ties, Chigur said: "Let's open a new page and forget the past. Now we are looking forward to the future". Inonu said: "This shows that relations between the two countries are very strong". /Hurriyet-Milliyet/
[03] CROATS SEND MESSAGE TO DEMIRELIn a move to confirm trust in Turkey, the Croatian leadership has sent a message to President Suleyman Demirel denying reports that the Croats and the Serbs have reached agreement on the political division of Bosnia.In a message sent through the Croatian Ambassador to Ankara, the Croats reassured Demirel that Croatia stood by tentative plans for a Croat-Bosnia federation. Nevertheless, speculation in the foreign press about the future of war-torn Bosnia increases daily, with new reports about a line through Bosnia that will divide it equally between Croatia and Serbia. In contradiction, Bosnian Ambassador to Ankara, Hayrettin Somun, said yesterday that the best answer to that claim was the recent Split meeting of state leaders where the stand of the sides involved was clearly declared. Croatian Ambassador to Ankara, Hidayet Bishchevish, yesterday gave President Demirel detailed information about the operation in Krajina. According to a statement by the Presidency Press Office, Bishchevish said that the operation had been successfully completed. The Croatian forces have also taken measures to prevent damage to the local population and to solve the refugee problem. /Cumhuriyet-Hurriyet/
[04] "PKK USED BY SYRIA AS A WEAPON AGAINST TURKEY"The book "Water in the Middle East", published with contributions from the School of African and Eastern Studies at the London University, claims that a secret struggle for the distribution of water resources is going on in the Middle East, and that the terrorist PKK organization was being used as a weapon in this struggle. The book comments on the usage of the rivers in the Middle East within the light of international law. It is pointed out that Syria was implementing the policy of "supporting divisive and destructive elements" regarding the Euphrates river waters. "Syria has been using the PKK organization as a trump card against Turkey in the struggle for the Euphrates waters", said foreign policy specialist Greg Shapland, who is a representative of the British delegation in the Multinational Water Working Group contributing to the Middle East peace process meetings. /Sabah/
[05] CALL TO NATIONS TO SHOW DETERMINATIONFollowing an international meeting in Istanbul about the humanitarian aspects of the Bosnia war, state minister responsible for human rights Algan Hacaloglu, said yesterday that despite the decisions reached by the participants, nothing would be achieved until the nations of the world showed more determination to resolve the Bosnia war crisis.The meeting was attended by representatives from fourteen countries who agreed that more aid must be sent on to Bosnia. Turkey will again send a special delegation to determine local needs. /Hurriyet/
[06] BOSNIA SEEKS MORE SUPPORT FROM ANKARAMohammed Lemes, Deputy Defence Minister of Bosnia-Herzegovina, who arrived in Ankara at Sunday night to attend preliminary talks on the Turkish-Bosnian defence cooperation agreement, paid a visit to Defence Minister Mehmet Golhan. "There are Romanian and Russian soldiers along with terrorists from Pale and Belgrade. Russia gives huge amounts of logistic support to the Serbs. The embargo is effective only on the Bosnians" Lemes disclosed. He noted that they attached great importance to Turkey's contributions but they needed more material aid quickly. "I hope my visit will be the turning point in this direction. If we have a balance of weaponry, we will achieve peace at once" he concluded. Golhan, for his part, stressed that there would be no political solution before the aggression stopped. He also blamed the UN for not allowing NATO to intervene in the clashes. Meanwhile, Hayreddin Somun, Bosnian Ambassador in Ankara said that the defence cooperation agreement between the two countries, which is expected to be signed in the coming days, was a standard agreement. /Hurriyet-Cumhuriyet/
[07] CETIN WARNS ABOUT BALKAN WARHikmet Cetin, Deputy Prime Minister and the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), warned the UN about a possible Balkan war and requested measures to prevent this development. In the middle of Europe, all values that are being defended are being destroyed, Cetin said in his party's general assembly meeting. He requested that the UN Security Council and the countries which control it recognize Bosnia's territorial integrity, sovereignty and rights. Otherwise, he said, the Balkans will come to the threshold of a big war. "The Balkans are turning into a bomb ready to explode following Croatia's interference. All the big wars broke out from the Balkans". /Cumhuriyet-Sabah/
[08] GERMAN MAGAZINE SAYS GREENS SUPPORT PKKFocus, a German political weekly, claims in this week's issue that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is being supported by the German Greens, some deputies from the Democratic Socialist Party (PDS), and some religious groups. The article alleged that some deputies from PDS, for example, Siegfried Martsch, have been organizing demonstration marches and meetings for the PKK to make anti-Turkish propaganda, and have been organizing talks between PKK leaders and reporters. The article also said that Priest Hans Stoodt has hidden PKK sympathizers from police in his Frankfurt church. Some of these people went on hunger strikes, and others attacked the police. /Milliyet/
[09] GERMAN DEPUTY DENIES BEING PKK SYMPATHIZERStefen Tippach, a deputy of the Democratic Socialist Party (PDS), has made the impolitic but interesting move of giving a speech about an imaginary Kurdish state as part of his statement to the DPA German news agency, the Anatolia news agency reported. Tippach's remarks seem to contradict his claim that he has never had any connection with the PKK. Although Tippach defended himself by saying he never had any contact with the PKK, and that he and his party are only interested in the human rights element of the Kurdish issue, his statement to the DPA news agency nevertheless gave the impression that he was one of the PKK.
[10] 15 PKK MILITANTS KILLEDFifteen militants of the PKK terrorist organization were killed, one captured and seven surrendered in the Southeast. The Office of the State of Emergency Governor reported that three security guards were killed in action during the clashes. Meanwhile, terrorists killed one person and kidnapped eight others during surprise attacks in the hamlet of Bataklik in Hakkari's Yuksekova district. /Hurriyet/
[11] PKK REPORT TO GERMANYTurkey has presented information about the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to Germany to be presented to Prime Minister Helmut Kohl. The "PKK report" has three important aspects: the first one is about how the PKK brings its supporters to Germany through illegal ways; the second one is about drug smuggling which is the organization's most important source of revenue; the third aspect is how the PKK collects money by force. /Hurriyet/
[12] TRNC WARNING TO UNPrime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Hakki Atun, has warned the United Nations (UN) about recent demonstrations along the Greek side of the border. In his written statement, Atun said that Greek youths riding motor bikes demonstrated throughout the day at the Turco-Greek border, and threw stones at the security forces but the United Nations Peace Force made no effort to disperse the demonstrators. Atun asked UN to take more effective measures against such provocative activities. /Cumhuriyet/
[13] MEHMET EMIN AGA RELEASED BY GREECEMehmet Emin Aga, the popularly-elected Mufti (Islamic cleric) of Iskece (Xanthi) in Western Thrace, was released from a Greek prison in Larisa yesterday after serving six and a half months of a 10-month sentence for "impersonating a religious cleric". The remaining months of Mehmet Emin Aga's sentence have been converted to a monetary fine after he suffered serious stomach hemorrhaging 10 days ago which required hospitalization. /Cumhuriyet/
[14] YILMAZ RECEIVES AZERI PARTY CHAIRMANItibar Mahmedov, chairman of the main opposition party in Azerbijan, visited Mesut Yilmaz, chairman of the Motherland Party (ANAP). Yilmaz said before the meeting that elections in Azerbaijan have been put on the agenda, and that he and his counterpart would assess the new political improvement between Turkey and Azerbaijan. /Cumhuriyet/
[15] EPHESUS MUSEUM WILL REPRESENT TURKEY IN MUSEUM CONTESTThe Ephesus Museum, one of the finest museums in Turkey, has been selected as a candidate in the "The 1996 European Museum of the Year" contest, to be held in Vasteras in Sweden, the Anatolia news agency reported. The Submerged Archeology Museum in Bodrum won the "Private Praise Prize" at the same contest and has therefore, been invited back for the next year.
[16] BLACK SEA CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE TO BE LAUNCHEDResponding to demands from Turkish chambers of commerce in the Black Sea region, as well as those in the Russian Federation, the Black Sea Chamber of Commerce is expected to be formed in the following days, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. Mazhar Afacan, chairman of Trabzon Chamber of Commerce, stated that according to the protocol signed between Trabzon and Rize's Chambers and Sochi Chambers of Commerce of the Russian Federation, an organized chamber in the Black Sea coast would help develop trade in the region and further improve economic cooperation between the two countries.
[17] TURCO-SYRIAN BORDER TRADE YIELDS HIGH RETURNSThe border trade between Turkey and Syria has yielded Turkey TL 29.49 billion in exports and TL 1.5 billion for Syria in the first seven months of this year, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. In the same period last year, Syrian imports stood at TL 746.9 million while exports to Syria were estimated at TL 8.32 billion, according to the information provided by the Gaziantep Customs Directorate.
[18] TURKISH CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES IN 26 COUNTRIESTurkish businessmen, who are constructing roads, bridges, hotels, factories, and establishing partnerships in 26 countries around the world, are now effective in 10 % of the world market. Thirty thousand Turkish workers are employed in projects spread throughout these 26 countries. During the present years, Turkish construction companies have been very successful in the former Soviet Republics. Europe also attaches importance to Turkish companies; for instance Germany. Turkish companies providing services in German markets have a trade volume of DM 800 million. /Milliyet/END |
