[01] ENVOY RETURNS HOME EMPTY-HANDED FROM SAUDI ARABIA

A Turkish envoy returned yesterday from a mission to stop the beheading of Turks in Saudi Arabia apparently empty-handed, saying Ankara simply had to follow the appeals process for Turks on capital charges. "There is hope as long as these procedures are monitored" Nevzat Yalcintas said. Yalcintas, who went to Jeddah on Friday, delivered a message from President Suleyman Demirel to Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz, asking for a halt to the executions of Turks charged with smuggling Captagon. The Crown Prince, who headed a session of the Council of Ministers on the issue, instead of King Fahd, in his statement, praised the freedom of integration of Saudi Arabian justice system and said: "We will continue to behead those who smuggle drugs in our country". On the other hand, President Demirel said: "This issue will be solved if he has mercy on these people and lets them serve their prison sentence in Turkey". /Cumhuriyet/

Regular tripartite meetings between the three neighbouring countries were set up after the Gulf War. /Cumhuriyet/

    [04] INTELLECTUALS LEND MORAL SUPPORT

A group of Turkish intellectuals now in Bosnia said that they were "giving moral support" to the battered people of the region. In Bosnia as part of an aid campaign for the Bosnians, the group of writers, journalists, artists and others are touring camps and other important places. The latest report from the group of 58 people in the tour has come from Tuzla where they held a number of round table discussions with fellow intellectuals. Turkey would be pleased to cooperate with China, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, especially in order to solve the Bosnia problem, Cetin added.
