TURKISH PRESS REVIEWFRIDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 1996Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] CILLER CONFIRMS TRUST IN ISRAELForeign Minister Ciller yesterday extended assurances of Turkey's trust in Israel to Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy, by saying that relations between Turkey and Israel would continue to grow stronger. Ciller stressed that there was no change in Turkey's attitudes towards Israel and added that it had always been Turkey's hope and intention to develop ties with Israel. She draw attention to the new agreements between Turkey and Israel, saying that these were positive steps forward. /Hurriyet/[02] PRODI PROPOSES TO MEDIATE BETWEEN GREECE AND TURKEYItalian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has proposed to act as a mediator between Turkey and Greece to solve the problems between the two countries. While evaluating Sunday's election in Greece, Prodi said to new Prime Minister Costas Simitis that he wished that Simitis would put into practice an active policy in his relations with Cyprus and Turkey in order to maintain peace in the Mediterranean. He said he himself was ready to act as a mediator to improve relations between Greece and Turkey.Prodi stated that what Greece and Italy had in common was both couuntries were in Europe and had significant responsibilities for the Mediterranean region. He noted that Europe needed a Mediterranean policy and that Italy and Greece had no choice but to take the lead in this regard. He also said that it would be dangerous for the "axis" of Europe to move towards the north. /All papers/ [03] BRITISH MINING COMPANIES GET INVESTMENT GO-AHEADState Minister Teoman Riza Guneri, who is responsible for mining activities, has announced that his ministry has given approval for a project to produce soda-water. The project, named Trona, had languished in the planning stages for 13 years. Guneri met yesterday with Sir Kieran Prendergast, British Amabssador in Turkey, and said that investment in the project could start within three months.The minister said that negotiations with all the British companies which have entered their bids for the Trona project would be accelarated. He pointed out that the completed project could generate $175 million in revenue each year. /All papers/ [04] ISO RANKS TURKISH JUNIOR INDUSTRY FIRMSThe Istanbul Chamber of Industry issued the results of its research on the 250 industry organizations that follow the largest 500. The 250 firms were ranked according to their sales figures and the total profits of the 250 were TL 210.511 trillion.Two-hundred-and-twenty-eight of the firms (91 %) were operating in the private sector while only 22 firms (9 %) were state-run. The Private firms' profits were TL 16.212 trillion while the public firms posted and TL 8 trillion loss in 1995. Private firms gained 41.8 % of their profits from nonproductive sources. /All papers/ [05] TURKEY RELIES LESS ON FOREIGN CREDITThe country has been less dependent on foreign credit in the first half of this year compared to the first six months of 1995. According to figures from the Turkish Central Bank, medium and long term credits in the January-June term of 1996 have decreased by 4.4 % to $1.9 billion. Last year's sum was $1.987 billion. Short term credit usage declined to $1.9 billion in the first half of 1996 as well, representing a decrease of 23.5 % compared to the figure of $2.482 billion for the same period last year. /All papers/[06] TURKISH EMBASSY IN AFGHANISTAN EVACUATEDBecause clashes between the fundamentalist Taliban organization and forces of the Afghan government have intensified in Kabil, the capital of Afghanistan, Turkish diplomats and their families are trying to leave the city. Head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Information Department, Sermet Atacanli, stated that nobody was left except one local civil servant at the Turkish Embassy in Kabil and said that the evacuation from the city was continuing. /Milliyet/[07] STATE MINISTER YILMAZ IN CHINAState Minister Ayfer Yilmaz and her accompanying delegation continue with their contacts in China. During a banquet given following an official meeting they held with the Chinese Textile Committee in Beijing, it was discovered that Turkish hazelnuts were included in the banquet dinner. Learning that Turkish hazelnuts arrived in China through US companies, Yilmaz called upon Turkish bureaucrats in the delegation to initiate a feasibility study into direct nut sale to China. /Hurriyet/[08] IN PRAISE OF THE TURKISH LANGUAGEFor 64 years the Turkish Language Society has promoted the Turkish language, refining and stressing the richness of the language.
