Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning.
[01] TURKEY AND AZERBAIJAN ENTER INTO STRATEGIC COOPERATION
Turkey and Azerbaijan on Monday signed on "Deepened Strategic
Cooperation" and vowed to help each other in the event that either
side's sovereignity and territorial integrity was endangered. The
signing of the declaration took place at the highest level, with
President Suleyman Demirel representing Turkish side and President
Haydar Aliyev the Azeri side. Azerbaijani President Aliyev arrived in
Ankara on Monday for an official visit during which a host of other
agreements on economic and technical cooperation between the two
countries were signed. Turkey and Azerbaijan on Monday also signed
cooperative agreements in the fields of maritime and air
transportation, social security and electricity./Milliyet/Cumhuriyet_
[02] DEMIREL TO VISIT POLAND
President Suleyman Demirel is to pay an official visit to Poland May
7-9 on the invitation of his Polish counterpart Aleksander
Kwasniewski, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.
Demirel will be accompanied by a very large group of Turkish
businessmen for his second official visit to this country.
[03] TURKEY AND ISRAEL DISCUSS TANK PROJECT
Gen. Cevik Bir, deputy chief of the Turkish General Staff, currently
on a three-day visit to Israel, on Monday visited Israeli defense
industry facilities while the Turkish delegation of defense experts
held meetings with their Israeli counterparts. The Turkish delegation
briefed Israeli officials on the 10-year purchasing program of the
Turkish Armed Forces and the two parties discussed possible joint
projects. The two sides also discussed the modernization of Turkish
M-60 tanks by Israel and the Turkish "tank project" which involves the
joint production of tanks in Turkey and their sale to a third country.

[04] TURKEY DEMANDS ITS FRIGATES
Turkish defense officials met on Monday with U.S. defense official
Jan Lodal to demand a straight answer on whether the U.S. Congress
would finally send frigates bought by Turkey. Defense Minister Turhan
Tayan and Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen reminded Lodal
that Turkey had paid in advance for the three frigates which were
subsequently blocked by the U.S. Congress. This led Turkey to cancel
an order for 10 U.S. Cobra helicopters, upsetting Washington. Lodal,
the U.S. Principle deputy undersecretary of Defense for Policy, said:
"Turkey is crucially strategic ally of U.S. and we will continue to
work together and will develop issues of mutual interest./Milliyet/
[05] TURKISH HELICOPTER INDUSTRY ESTABLISH SOON
Efforts have been accelerated to establish a Turkish Helicopter
Industry (THS). Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, Machinery and
Chemical Industry Agency and Turkish Motors Industry have
representatives in the joint working group working under the
coordination of the Defense Industry Undersecretarait. Turkish
Aviation and Space Industry has been appointed the Turkish contractor.
Proposals will be taken from US, Italian, French, German and Russian
companies such as McDonnel-Douglas, Sikorsky, Augusta, Eurocopter.
The evaluations will be concluded at the begining of 1998 and a
prototype offensive helicopter will be produced before the year

[06] FOREIGN MINISTRY OFFICIAL BATU IN CHINA
Turkish Foreign Ministry undersecretary Inal Batu has met in Beijing
with China's Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Jian to discuss bilateral
ties, the Anatolia news agency reported on Monday. Batu has
responsibility for overseeing Turkish-Greek relations, the Cyprus
issue and the air and naval forces. The group will visit Shanghai
later in the week.
[07] BOAT DISASTER IN KUSADASI
The bodies of 16 people, who died when the boat in which they were
being smuggled sank near Kusadasi, were picked up along the Greek
coast by the Turkish Coast Guard, the Anatolia news agency reported
over the weekend. Fifteen of the dead and six of those missing have
been identified. The guards are still trying to find the captain of
the boat and to identify one woman who died.
The boat was reportedly carrying a group of Iraqis, including five
women and three children, trying to enter a European Union country.
The boat's captain was Turkish while the crew was Iranian. A search
is still continuing for the missing passangers.
[08] TURKEY AIMS FOR MORE TOURIST
Turkey is aiming to attract 10 million tourists who will hopefully
spend $ 7.5 billion during their stay in 1997, the Anatolia news
agency reported. Tourism Minister Bahattin Yucel, speaking after
opening a hotel in Antalya said that during 1996, 8.6 million tourists
came to Turkey, injecting into the economy $ 6 billion. Yucel said
that their target was 10 million tourists and $ 7.5 billion in tourism
income in 1997. He added that the tourists were mostly from Germany,
Britain and Russia and that this spread would probably not changed
this year.
[09] CHILEAN REFORMIST ECONOMIST JOSE PINERA VISITS TURKEY
Chilean reformist economist Jose Pinera, on a visit to Turkey, will
give a talk on the "Privatization of the Social Security System and
its Examples in the World" in Istanbul on Tuesday. The Chilean
economist will be giving the address at the Istanbul Stock Exchange
(IMKB) in Istinye at 17:50. Pinera also met officials in Ankara on
Monday.
[10] TIRSAN EXPORT TRUCK TRAILERS TO GERMANY
Tirsan Industry, Trade and Transportation Corp., Turkey's leading
truck producer, announced Monday that it received a DM 3 million
contract to supply 60 lorry trailers to Germany's E and H Arnold
Spedition Co. Tirsan in a written statement said it would supply 15
long distance lorry trailers immediately and 45 trailers in weekly
installments of five over nine weeks.
It said the agreement was signed on 29 April at Tirsan's factory in
Adapazari, where it manufactures long distance lorry trailers.
Tirsanalso exports lorry trailers to other countries to other
countries, including Romania.
[11] 50 TERRORISTS KILLED
During a conflict between the Turkish security forces and militants of
the PKK terrorist organization in the Cukurca district of Hakkari
along the Iraqi border, 50 terrorists were killed, while eight Turkish
soldiers and one village guard died and 10 soldiers were wounded.

[12] A COMMISSION BETWEEN TURKEY AND GREECE
According to a statement made by the Foreign Ministry, representatives
of Turkey and Greece have been determined to solve problems between
the two countries at a commission. Argiris Faturos, a lecturer from
the Athens University and Krateros Yoannu from the Trakya University
will represent Greece at the commission, while retired ambassadors
Prof.Suat Bilge and Sukru Elekdag will represent Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/
[13] KLERIDES REFUSES DENKTAS' CALL
A call made by President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
(TRNC) Rauf Denktas to initiate meetings within the framework of "A
series of Ghali's ideas" has been refused by Greek Cypriot leader
Glafkos Klerides once again. Klerides said that he could meet with
Denktas only if "sovereignty and political equality" would not be
discussed. Replying to questions of journalists, Denktas stated that
there was no progress in indirect meetings. /Cumhuriyet/
[14] BULGARIA CALLS FOR COOPERATION IN THE STRUGGLE AGAINST MAFIA
Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov said that Balkan countries should
jointly struggle against organized crime, international terrorism and
mafia. Noting that an initial agreement has been achieved regarding
this issue during a meeting he held with Romanian President Emil
Konstantinescu in Sofia on 30 April, Petar Stoyanov stated that he
believed that he would also reach a consensus of opinion regarding
this issue with Turkish President Suleyman Demirel during his visit to
Turkey in early June. /Sabah/
[15] 21 TURKISH FIRMS AMONG LEADING 300 COMPANIES IN THE WORLD
According to a list of the biggest textile firms of the world made by
the TextilWirtschaft magazine, 21 Turkish textile firms were among the
first 300 companies in the world. The German textile ranked first
with 71 firms, Japan ranked second with 64 firms, the US third with 50
firms and Brazil fourth with 35 firms. /Sabah/
[16] TURCO-US COOPERATION IN HAZELNUT
Turkey and the US will cooperate in marketing hazelnuts. According to
officials of the Georgia Agricultural Department, with this
cooperation, the consumption of hazelnuts in the US would increase.
Cathi Mclain, a department official, said that they signed an
agreement with the Fisko Birlik of Turkey. /Sabah/
[17] TURKEY RANKS 57TH IN NATIONAL INCOME
According to a report "The State of World Population" issued by the
United Nations (UN), Turkey ranked 17th among 154 countries from the
standpoint of population and 26th from the standpoint of total income.
Turkey came 57th as of her national income per capita, while
Switzerland came first with $42,690 and Japan came second with
$40,800. /Hurriyet/
[18] CILLER PROUD WITH THE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE TURKISH ECONOMY
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller told a press
conference yesterday that Turkey had made important steps towards the
improvement of its economy in the aftermath of the April 5 economic
package. She noted that Turkey was facing no foreign exchange
difficulties anymore, and that Turkish exports were increasing. "We
will preserve our position of a country with highest rate of economic
growth among the OECD countries," Ciller said. She pledged that new
agreements with World Bnak and IMF were ahead, and referring to the
positive results obtained in contacts with IMF officials said that
Turkey's credit volume will be increased to $1 billion. /Sabah/
[19] TURCO-GREEK MEETING
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister George Papandreu and Turkish Foreign
Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen met yesterday in Strasbourg. Both
officials discussed on the methods to be employed by the "group of
wise men" from the two countries in their efforts to resolve bilateral
disagreements. Turkey and Greece are expected to announce this
evening the names of the specialists that will take part in the group.

[20] INCREASE IN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION
Industrial production has increased by 11.1 percent in March in
comparison to the same month last year. Manufacturing is the sector
that has marked the greatest success with an increase rate of 12
percent, followed by mining and electicity, gas and water supplies.
Increase for the first three months of the year is 5.4 percent.

[21] CHP LEADER PRESENTS REPORT ON CYPRUS TO BLAIR
The new UK government, has received a report on Cyprus from the
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal. The report
follows the developemnts in the Cyprus issue and presents the Turkish
approach to the question. The report was presented to the new British
Foreign Minister Robin Cook by CHP Secretary General Adnan Keskin who
was following the election campaign in the UK. /Milliyet/
