President Suleyman Demirel flew to Poland on Wednesday for a two-day official visit aimed at improving trade relations and other ties. Before his departure from Ankara's Esenboga Airport, Demirel said that his delegation would be giving priority to improving economic ties and trade.

Demirel is scheduled to meet with President Aleksander Kwasniewski and other Polish officials. The two will sign an agreement for cooperation in tourism. President Demirel said talks would also focus on the expansion of NATO and the European Union.

    [02] CLINTON DISCUSSES FRIGATE CONTROVERSY

U.S. President Bill Clinton said his administration is evaluating the controversial delivery of three frigates to Turkey in the overall context of his country's foreign policy, including the U.S. approach to the Aegean and Cyprus disputes between Ankara and Athens.

Responding to a letter from a member of the U.S. House of Representatives voicing concerns about the delay in the delivery of the frigates to Turkey, Clinton said that he understood such concerns but that recent developments such as the Kardak islets crisis fueled tension between Turkey and Greece. Clinton added that the United States should take into consideration the importance of easing regional disputes when implementing its policies./Sabah/

[03] TURKISH PARLIAMENT PREPARES TO CONTRIBUTE TO PEACE IN CENTRAL ASIA

Parliament Speaker Mustafa Kalemli on Tuesday noted the importance of cooperation between the parliaments of the Turkic Republics, which he said would serve to establish a permanent and just peace in Central Asia and the Caucasus, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Kalemli stressed that the cooperation between parliament speakers was not directed against any third state or nation. On the contrary, he said, the primary aim of the cooperation was to establish peace in the region. "We are sitting around a table with equal rights. We are acting with good intentions," Kalemli added.

[04] TURKEY SEES 'WISE MEN' AS POSITIVE STEP

The first meeting of the committee of 'wise men', established to define the problems between the two countries and propose solutions to them, will be held in mid-May in the Netherlands.

Atacanli pointed out that the report would not be binding on the governments but that they would evaluate the report and use it to decide on possible future studies and actions. Foreign Ministry undersecretary Onur Oymen said that the results of the wise men's report would not mean the end of the process of normalizing relations and increasing mutual confidence but a strong beginning./Cumhuriyet/
