[05] IMF PRAISES THE NEW GOVERNMENT
International Monetary Fund (IMF) members have declared that they
welcome the ANASOL-D coalition government's economic projects. The
IMF officials reported that the Turkish economy realised an average 8
percent growth in the 1995-1996 period. They added that there would
be an estimated 5.5 percent growth rate in the economy in 1997 and
that the export rate would highly increase.
The IMF Executive Board noted that growth in Turkish economy was based
on strong trends and that foreign exchange reserves were at sufficient
levels. It was stressed that Turkey's economic potential would be
maintained by a stable macro-economic environment. It was further
pointed out that foreign investment would have to be encouraged to
speed up the privatization process and that legal changes in line with
those needs should be realised as soon as possible. /Cumhuriyet/

exchange views with President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus before the second round of talks between Rauf Denktas
