[01] HOLBROOKE IN ATHENS
Richard Holbrooke, US permanent representative in the United
Nations and President Clinton's former special Cyprus envoy, and Thomas
Miller, special Cyprus coordinator, went yesterday to Athe[Ans to seek
ways to ease the tension between Greece and Turkey. Holbrooke met with
Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangolos and
other high level officials . According to the Greek press, Pangalos
told Holbrooke that Greece wants the moratorium in the Aegean Sea to be
extended by two months and military flights over Cyprus banned.

[02] AGREEMENT WITH IMF TO BE SIGNED NEXT WEEK
Head of the IMF-Turkey Desk Martin Hardy said yesterday that a
Staff Monitoring Programme would be signed with Turkey probably next
week. Hardy noted that following Turkish State Minister Gunes Taner's
contacts with the IMF in the US, the final details of the agreement
would be completed. Hardy said: "The IMF will agree to sign this
agreement with Turkey because we have seen that the Turkish government
is determined to reduce the inflation rate and implement economic
programmes".
Hardy stated that Turkey had a more stable capital structure when
compared with Asian countries and added that the IMF believed Turkey
would attract further foreign capital". /Hurriyet/
[03] AUSTRIAN, BELGIAN AMBASSADORS TOURING GAP REGION
Rasph Scheider and Alexis Brouhns, the Austrian and Belgian
ambassadors to Ankara, went yesterday to the southeastern city of
Sanliurfa to begin a tour of the Southeast Anatolia Project(GAP). The
ambassadors told press members there that their countries were
interested in the project and were ready to cooperate both in private

[04] PALESTINIAN MINISTER CONTINUES ANKARA VISIT
The Turkish Foreign Ministry yesterday sent messages to Palestine
via Higher Education Minister Hannan Asrawi who is holding contacts in
Ankara. The ministry stressed that Turkey wants to improve relations
with Palestine and hopes that Turkey's cooperation with Israel will not
be misinterpreted by Palestine. Foreign Minister Ismail Cem will visit
Israel and Palestine between July 6-9,said a statement by the ministry.
Asrawi also visited the Middle East Technical University(METU) and

[05] BURDA: "WE WILL EXTEND FULL SUPPORT TO TURKEY"
Head of the Executive Board of the German Burda Group Dr.Hubert
Burda, who is holding contacts in Turkey, met with Head of the Executive
Board of Dogan Media Group, Aydin Dogan, yesterday. Burda said:
"Turkey is a very important country for us and we are ready to exert
every effort for the recovery of Turco-German relations and for Turkey's
full EU membership". The Burda Group signed a cooperation agreement
with the Hurriyet Magazine Group at the beginning of 1998. /Hurriyet/
[06] 200 RUSSIAN OFFICERS ASSIGNED TO CYPRUS
It is reported that Russia will send 200 officers to the Greek
Cypriot Administration to prepare the deployment of Russian-made S-300
missiles on the island. Greek Cypriot newspapers noted that the Russian
officers are expected to arrive in Cyprus by the end of this month.
There is concern that the arrival of the officers will increase tension

[07] KIRIKKALE HEROIN OPERATION
Teams from the Department for the Struggle Against Smuggling from
the Kirikkale Security Department have seized 200 grammes of heroin and
97 grammes of Indian hemp seeds. Cumali Gezici, who was taken into
custody following the incident yesterday, was later arrested.

[08] HURRIYET CARTOONS IN MOLDOVA
During a visit of Turkish President Suleyman Demirel to Moldova on
June 25-26, a joint exhibition including the cartoons which won awards
at the Aydin Dogan Foundation Hurriyet International Cartoon Competition
will be opened in Moldova. The exhibition will also be displayed in
various cities in Asia, Europe and the US. /Hurriyet/
[09] GREEK AMBASSADOR VISITS BLACK SEA REGION
Greek Ambassador to Ankara Dimitrios Nezeritis has begun a visit to
the Black Sea Region. Initially, Nezeritis visited the governor of
Amasya Kemal Nehrozoglu and then the historical and touristic sites of
the district. Nezeritis noted that his visit was aimed at strengthening
friendship between the two countries and said: "Turkey is full of
historical assests. My visit will continue in various districts".

[10] CIVAN SET FREE ON BAIL
The former General Director of Emlakbank Engin Civan was set free
yesterday on bail for $215,000. It is reported that a case will will
opened for the extradition of Civan to Turkey on June 17. Meanwhile,
the US government has rejected the demand of the Turkish Justice
Ministry for the extradition of criminals in the US to Turkey. Justice
Minister Oltan Sungurlu noted that the US government rejected the
extradition of Halil Bezmen by stating that he was a 'financial
offender'. Sungurlu said that they would claim a new demand for the tax
debt incurred by Bezmen. /Hurriyet/
[11] TURKEY IN EXPO '98 FAIR
Including Turkey 170 countries are participating in the worlds
biggest fair. Expo '98 opened yesterday and will end 30 June. The main
theme of the Expo '98 World Fair is "oceans". The personel boat of
Sultan Abdulaziz, objects belonging to the Ottoman Navy and Anatolian
civilizations and underwater archeological findings are exhibited at the
Turkish stand in the fair. /Sabah/
[12] WATER DELIVERY TO TRNC
Director General of the State Water Board, Dogan Altınbilek said
Turkey will oficially launch a project to supply the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with water on June 25. "The first delivery will
be carried out on June 25 using a plastic balloon with a capacity of
10,000 cubic meters. In July a second balloon with the same capacity
will join the first one and by the end of August three balloons will be
operating," said Altinbilek. The balloons will be filled at the
Mediterranean port of Soguksu near Anamur and will dock at the TRNC port
of Kumkoy, near the town of Guzelyurt. /Sabah/
[13] TURKEY AND POLAND SIGN MILITARY COOPERATION AGREEMENT
Defense minister Ismet Sezgin and his Polish counterpart Janusz
Onyszkiewicz in Warsaw on Monday signed a military cooperation
agreement. The deal allows for an exchange of military cadets between
the both countries, and stipulates that both countries will send
military observers to view each other's military exercises.
Sezgin will meet on Wednesday with Polish Prime Minister Jerzy
Buzek. He will also be received by Polish President Alexander
Kwasniewski. /Cumhuriyet/
[14] TURKEY AND ALGERIA SIGN PROTOCOL FOR POLITICAL CONSULTATION
Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and his Algerian counterpart
Ahmed Attaf signed a political consultation protocol on Monday in
Ankara. Speaking prior to the signing ceremony, Cem said that Turkey
and Algeria were on the verge of a new beginning and that they would
like to take new economic, social and political steps to further
increase their ties.
The visiting minister was also received by President Suleyman
Demirel yesterday. Attaf will leave Turkey on Tuesday evening after
meeting with high level Turkish officials. /Hurriyet/
[15] TURKEY AND BOSNIA SEEK TO IMPROVE FUNCTIONING OF DAYTON ACCORD
Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit stressed on Monday that
contributing to the proper functioning of the Bosnia-Herzegovina
Federation was both a humanitarian and national duty for Turkey.
Speaking at a meeting with Bosnian President Eyup Ganic, who is on his
first official visit to Turkey, Ecevit said that the objective of their
talks was to seek ways of solving the economic and security problems of
the Bosnia-Herzegovina Federation. Ganic for his part said that the
Bosniana needed Turkey's contributions, and that stability in the
Balkans was not possible without Turkey's cooperation.
Before meeting Ecevit, Ganic came together with Parliament Speaker

[16] TURKISH-GERMAN BUSINESSMEN IN RUHR REGION MEET
"Developments and prospects for German Turkish partnership" was the
topic of a meeting in Haltern, Germany, the Anatolia news agency
reported yesterday. It was organized by the Center for Turkish Studies
(TAM), which has added a new activity geared toward entrepreneurs by
bringing together the Turkish and German businessmen in Ruhr region.
TAM Director, Faruk Sen, said that there were very attractive
partnership projects for Turks and Germans in the Ruhr basin which was
the largest industrial region in Germany and where there is a 380,000
Turkish population. He added that Turkish and German businessmen could
also work on joint partnerships in Turkey.
