Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday attended the 722nd Sogut
Festival to Commemorate Ertugrul Gazi, father of the first Ottoman sultan,
Osman I. Addressing the gathering, Erdogan said that Turkey had a
distinguished historical reputation and honor. “We are working hard to live
up to our past,” said the premier. Nationalist Action Party (MHP) leader
Devlet Bahceli as well as Great Union Party (BBP) leader Muhsin Yazicioglu

[02] TURKEY STANDS AS CANDIDATE FOR UN SECURITY COUNCIL
After an interval of 50 years, Turkey has become a candidate for membership
on the United Nations Security Council. Turkish officials orally conveyed
Ankara’s desire to UN officials to serve as a nonpermanent member of the
Security Council for the period of 2009-2010. The UN General Assembly will
vote on the candidates in October 2008. Most recently, Turkey was a member
of the council in 1960. /Turkiye/
[03] GUL FACES BUSY ROUND OF FOREIGN VISITS
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul is scheduled next week to begin paying
important visits to various countries and international organizations in
both hemispheres, both near and far. Gul is to visit neighboring Georgia
today, and next week will travel to New York to spend six days at the UN’s
General Assembly meetings where he will hold bilateral contacts with
approximately 30 foreign ministers. October will also be a busy month for
Gul. He is to attend, as an observer, the EU’s intergovernmental conference
due to start on Oct 4 in Rome. He will then pay a visit to Athens as the
official guest of his Greek counterpart George Papandreou to discuss the
Aegean and Cyprus issues. On Oct. 16-18, Gul will also attend an
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) meeting set for Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia’s capital. /Sabah/
[04] GERMAN CHANCELLOR SCHROEDER: “TURKEY SHOULD BECOME AN EU MEMBER”
Turkey’s joining the ranks of the European Union would be beneficial both
to Europe in general and Germany in particular, said German Chancellor
Gerhard Schroeder yesterday. Criticizing the contention of some German
opposition parties that Turkey was not part of the continent and therefore
could not join the Union, Schroeder charged that such stances were based on
nothing but xenophobia. “Turkey is a model for the world, as a country
which has successfully synthesized Islamic values and Western democracy,”
added the chancellor. “Germany has many reasons to support Turkey’s EU
membership, as it would benefit our continent.” Last week in Berlin,
Schroeder praised Turkey’s progress in democracy and human rights to
visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] RUMSFELD: “I BELIEVE TURKEY WILL DEPLOY ITS TROOPS IN IRAQ”
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld over the weekend stated that he
believed Turkey would send its soldiers to Iraq to help Washington
establish peace and stability in the country. Stressing that the US wanted
to cooperate with Turkish troops in Iraq, Rumsfeld said that Ankara hoped
as fervently as Washington that Iraq would become a democratic regime. He
added that Turkey and the US were close friends and allies who shared many
common interests. /Cumhuriyet/
[06] BAYKAL: “FOR THE SAKE OF THE NATION, TURKEY SHOULDN’T SEND SOLDIERS TO
IRAQ”
Speaking at his party’s regional congress in Kocaeli yesterday, opposition
Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said that though Turkey
and the United States were allies, for the sake of the nation Ankara
shouldn’t send soldiers to Iraq. Also touching on the Cyprus issue, Baykal
said that Turkey shouldn’t accept the United Nations’ plan, which he
charged if adopted would transform the island into a Greek nation within a
decade. /Hurriyet/
[07] PORTUGESE PRESIDENT SAMPAIO ARRIVES IN ANKARA
Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio yesterday arrived in Ankara for an
official visit. He was greeted at Ankara’s Esenboga Airport by Foreign
Minister Abdullah Gul. Sampio is expected to meet today with his Turkish
counterpart Ahmet Necdet Sezer. During their talks, the two leaders are
expected to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues. /All papers/

Hisarciklioglu is set to fly to Quebec, Canada today in order to attend a

International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) finals in Monaco.

[13] DECIDING ON IRAQ DEPLOYMENTBY YILMAZ OZTUNA (TURKIYE)
Columnist Yilmaz Oztuna comments on how Turkey will decide whether or not
to send soldiers to Iraq. A summary of his column is as follows:
“Ankara can’t completely make up for the advantage it lost back in March
when it rejected the deployment of US soldiers in Turkey. Now we’re trying
to correct this error, but we’ve as yet been unable to. Even if we can, we
can compensate this national loss only partially. With these kinds of
national mistakes, one should get up immediately from wherever one fell.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul are
trying to do this. However, we handed over our strategic ally to two tribes
in northern Iraq, like a gift. Ankara is trying to correct this, but
conditions have changed so much since that day and the tribes have grabbed
at this historic opportunity. Politics is the art of seizing and benefiting
from opportunities. Those who miss opportunities later run into trouble.
The disarmament and dispersal of PKK_KADEK terrorists in northern Iraq
won’t be as easy as it would have been six months ago. The US doesn’t want
to conduct operations in the mountains anymore. It’s also afraid of
delivering this duty to Turkish soldiers and thus offending the Kurds.
However, Ankara and Washington will soon reach a consensus.
If one doesn’t feel and see the depth of one’s mistake, this mistake can’t
be fixed. Only the government is being faced with this tough spot. However,
a great many institutions, organizations and people are responsible for it
as well. As the US sees this, it has approached the Justice and Development
Party (AKP) in an understanding way. More generally, it’s both difficult
and dangerous to undertake a project in the region without Turks. Next week
the chief of General Staff will brief the government on the issue. This is
a political issue broadly based on the military.”
