[01] SEZER SENDS MESSAGE TO
TALAT ON 31ST ANNIVERSARY OF PEACE OPERATION
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer yesterday
sent a message to Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali
Talat marking the 31st anniversary of the
1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. Sezer stated
that there were two equal separate states
and nations on the island, adding that this
should be considered while seeking a
resolution there. Sezer further stated that
Turkey would continue to support efforts for
a just and lasting peace, adding that it was
time to bring the TRNC’s isolation to an
end. “The Turkish nation will always stand
by the Turkish Cypriots,” said Sezer.

[02] ERDOGAN: “WE’LL TAKE
NECESSARY STEPS TO PREVENT FURTHER TERRORIST
ATTACKS”
Speaking at Esenboga Airport yesterday
after returning from visits to Russia and
Mongolia, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan said that his stays in both
countries had been fruitful, adding that in
Russia he and Russian President Vladimir
Putin had discussed international relations.
“We’re pleased with the strengthening
relations between our countries,” said
Erdogan. The premier added that his trip to
Mongolia was the first Turkish visit at the
prime ministerial level since diplomatic
relations were first established between the
two countries. Also touching on recently
rising terrorist attacks in Turkey of the
terrorist group PKK, Erdogan said that the
government would take necessary measures to
prevent further attacks. “We’ll hold
meetings of the Cabinet and other related
bodies to take steps on the issue,” said
Erdogan, adding, however, that it wouldn’t
be appropriate to declare a state of
emergency. The premier also stressed that
the government was not planning any general
amnesty. /Turkiye/
[03] GUL: “TURKEY WILL NEVER
FORSAKE THE TRNC FOR ITS EU BID”
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 31st
anniversary of the 1974 Peace Operation in
the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
(TRNC), Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul called
the operation a turning point for the
Turkish Cypriots’ fight for freedom, adding
that Ankara would never forsake the TRNC for
its European Union aspirations. “The world
saw the stance of the Turkish Cypriots and
Greek Cypriots for a resolution during last
year’s referendums,” he said. “Greek
Cypriots rejected the UN Cyprus plan, while
Turkish Cypriots voted for it.” Gul further
stated that Greek Cypriots should pay a
price for this rejection. “They will pay a
price if the TRNC’s isolation ends,” said
Gul, adding that Ankara would stand by the
TRNC in its economic development and growth.
“The development and welfare of the TRNC is
one of our priorities,” added Gul. /Turkiye/
[04] 31ST ANNIVERSARY OF PEACE
OPERATION CELEBRATED IN THE TRNC
The 31st anniversary of the 1974 Peace
Operation was celebrated yesterday in the
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and Deputy
Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener attended the
ceremony, along with, for the first time,
delegations from Azerbaijan and Pakistan.
The foreign delegations stated that they
were pleased to be with the Turkish Cypriots
on such an important day, adding that direct
flights from their countries to the TRNC
would soon begin and economic ties would be
developed. Speaking at the ceremony, TRNC
President Mehmet Ali Talat said that a just
and lasting peace could be reached through
an awareness of the island’s realities.
“We’re ready for all kinds of initiatives
for a resolution, and the Greek Cypriots
should also support this,” said Talat. Talat
also stressed that he appreciated Ankara’s
support for the Turkish Cypriots. /Milliyet/
[05] GONUL MEETS WITH ALIYEV IN
AZERBAIJAN
On an official visit to Azerbaijan,
Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul yesterday met
with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. “We
appreciate Azerbaijan’s support for Turkish
Cyprus,” Gonul said. “During our meetings,
Aliyev stressed that Azerbaijan supports
Turkey’s demands on the Cyprus issue. The
Turkish nation thanks Azerbaijani officials
for their support.” In related news,
Azerbaijani Imair Airlines has applied to
the Azeri Directorate General of Civil
Aviation under the Transportation Ministry
to organize flights from Baku to the Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Imair
should be granted permission to organize
direct flights to the TRNC following the
approval of the ministry. The air travel
embargo imposed on Turkish Cyprus will then
be effectively lifted by Azerbaijan. /Sabah/
[06] US STATE DEPT: “THE ANNAN
PLAN IS THE BEST HOPE FOR A CYPRUS
RESOLUTION”
Speaking at a press conference yesterday,
US State Department deputy spokesman Adam
Ereli said that the Annan plan remained the
best hope for a resolution on Cyprus, adding
that possible negotiations between the two
sides would depend on the plan. Ereli
stressed that the US administration
continued to support the plan. Asked about
yesterday’s 31st anniversary of the 1974
Peace Operation in the Turkish Republic of
the Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ereli declined
to comment, saying that there was no use in
looking back three decades. "Our focus [is]
... on the Annan plan and we continue to
work with all sides to try to get them to
focus on the here and now," added Ereli.
"[And our focus is] on 2005 and what the
ambitions of the people of the island are
and how we can meet those ambitions and meet
those dreams of a peaceful and unified
future. That's where our focus is."

[08] INTELLIGENCE COOPERATION WITH RUSSIA
BY MURAT YETKIN (RADIKAL)
Columnist Murat Yetkin comments on
Turkey’s cooperation with Russia on the
issue of terrorism. A summary of his column
is as follows:
“On Nov. 4, 2004, Russian military
intelligence GRU head Gen. Valentin
Korabelnikov paid a visit to Ankara. He held
top secret meetings with General Staff
Intelligence head Gen. Arslan Guner. The
media paid no attention to these meetings,
but they marked a new era of intelligence
cooperation between Turkey and Russia. Along
the same lines, Gen. Guner will soon pay a
visit to Russia.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and
Russian President Vladimit Putin also
discussed intelligence issues on Sunday and
Monday in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. The
Caucasian region is very important to
Russia. Gen. Korabelnikov visited Turkey
soon after Chechen terrorists attacked a
school in Beslan last year and killed more
than 250 people. Turkey and Russia are
cooperating in exchanging intelligence on
Chechen terrorists. In addition, the PKK and
Iraq are of course very important to Turkey.
During the Saddam regime, Iraq was the
backyard of Moscow in the Middle East.
However, the US invasion upset all the
balances in the region. Still, Russia has
established connections with Iraq as well as
links with spy satellites owned by countries
besides the US. Russia doesn’t want to see a
divided Iraq in the region, and neither does
Turkey. Protecting Iraq’s territorial
integrity is of great importance to both
countries, and for similar reasons. We know
that Russian military and civilian
intelligence units have established contact
with the terrorist PKK. Former PKK head
Abdullah Ocalan took refuge in Russia twice
before his 1999 capture. Therefore, Russian
intelligence had good information on the
PKK.
Our National Intelligence Organization
(MIT) has close and well-established
relations with Moscow. Both civilian and
military intelligence units of the two
countries are currently trying to improve
their cooperation. Two days ago, Chief of
General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug announced
that the US had ordered the capture of
terrorist PKK leaders in northern Iraq.
Thus, with the backing of Russia and the US,
Turkey is now getting more support than ever
in its fight with terrorists. We’ll wait and
see what this cooperation will bring in the
future.”
