TEXT: DOD SAYS U.S. EVACUATION OPERATIONS IN ALBANIA COMPLETED

Washington -- The Department of Defense announced that the evacuation operations in Albania concluded March 26. Some 900 citizens from the United States and other countries were evacuated.

Approximately 100 U.S. Marines will remain in Tirana to provide security for the U.S. embassy "until appropriate security arrangements can be reestablished in country," DOD said.

Following is the text of the announcement.

U.S. EVACUATION OPERATIONS IN ALBANIA COMPLETED

The evacuation portion of Operation SILVER WAKE in Albania concluded today. A contingent of approximately 100 U.S. Marines will remain in Tirana, Albania, to provide security for the American Embassy and housing compound there until appropriate security arrangements can be reestablished in country.

Two U.S. Navy ships, USS Nashville and USS Ramage, currently are off shore to provide logistic and communications support for the Marines ashore.

During Operation SILVER WAKE nearly 900 citizens from the United States and other countries were evacuated by the U.S. task force.
