[01] Romania, the new president of OCEMN
Romania has become the new president of the Black Sea Economic Co-operation
Organisation (OCEMN). At a ceremony in the Moldovan capital of Kishinev on
Thursday, the current OCEMN president, Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicolae
Tabacaru, handed over to his Romanian counterpart Petre Roman, the new
OCEMN president for the next six months. In his inauguration speech,
Foreign Minister Petre Roman said it was for the third time when Romania
became the head of OCEMN. As president of the organisation, Romania's
priority will be to accelerate a series of regional projects designed to
enforce the co-operation and ensure economic growth. RADOR
[02] Fourth meeting of CEMN interior ministers
The fourth meeting of interior ministers of CEMN member states opened in
Poiana Brasov on Thursday. The Black Sea Co-operation Organisation includes
Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, the Russian Federation, Georgia,
Greece, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine. Participants
are expected to evaluate the co-operation potential within the Regional
Centre against crossborder organised crime in an attempt to solve the
problems concerning the active efficiency of regional projects designed to
combat worst cases of criminality. The Romanian interior minister is
expected to put forward a draft additional document to the existing
intergovernment agreement, a document designed to become the starting point
of any further joint operations by similar institutions in all the CEMN
member states. RADOR
[03] Romanian troops to participate in the multinational "Link Seas 2000"
training exercise
A Romanian military unit left the Otopeni Miliary Airport on Thursday to
participate in the multinational "Link Seas 2000" training exercise. 35,000
senior officers and officers in NATO member and partner states are expected
to join the training due in Portugal between May 2-15. The Romanian unit on
a C-139 Hercules plane include 89 senior officers and officers who will
join the command structures and other units taking part in the training.

[04] London, host of a conference on "The City of Sibiu and the
Transylvanian Saxon Villages"
The British capital hosted yesterday a conference on "The City of Sibiu and
the Transylvanian Saxon Villages" organised by the Rumanian Ministry of
Culture and the "Mihai Eminescu" Foundation under the auspices of the
Prince of Wales. Participants included major personalities of Romania,
United Kingdom, the US, France, Germany and Luxembourg. RADOR
[05] Romanian President Emil Constantinescu promulgated the sports and
sporting activites law
Romanian President Emil Constantinescu promulgated on Thursday the sports
and sporting activities law. During a ceremony at the Cotroceni Palace, the
Romanian head of state said the law provided the sports with a status of a
state sponsored activity of national interest. RADOR
[06] Paul Florea is the new president of the Supreme Court of Justice
Romanian President Emil Constantinescu designated on Thursday Mr Paul
Florea as president of Romania's Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ). Paul
Florea was sworn in before the president along with other eight lawyers who,
also by presidential decree, were nominated as judges with the CSJ. After
paying a tribute to former CSJ president Sorin Moisescu, who passed away
recently, president Constantinescu pointed out the major role the justice
and, consequently, the position of CSJ president were expected to play in
the Romanian society. RADOR
[07] IMF chief negociator Emanuel Zervoudakis is visiting Bucharest
Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu met IMF chief negociator Emanuel
Zervoudakis at the Victoria Palace on Thursday. At the same time, Romanian
Finance Ministry officials have further talks with the IMF representatives
in an attempt to finalise the intention letter designed to extend the
current agreement between the Romanian government and the IMF, due to
expire by May 31. The package of measures was actually decided last year
and reviewed in January 2000. The talks on Thursday focused on how the
Budget could be affected by the raise in the salaries of the Romanian
officials and the facilities granted to SMEs, recently approved in
parliament. RADOR
[08] Bank of Piraeus extends its activity in Romania
The Bank of Piraeus announced its intention to take over the Pater Credit
Bank of Romania after signing an agreement allowing the transfer of the
whole Pater Bank's capital to the Bank of Piraeus. The new bank, under the
name Bank of Piraeus Romania, will operate as a credit bank. RADOR News
Agency reports that a previous agreement was signed in November last year
between the Bank of Piraeus and the Budapest Bank who owned the Pater Bank.
