NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

SARAJEVO - Due to the invitation to the Republika Srpska (RS) minister of education, science and culture, to attend the solemn proclamation of Thessaloniki as a city of the European culture in 1997, RS vice-president Velibor Ostojic received in Pale the charge d'affaires of the Greek Embassy in Sarajevo, Rusoss Kunduros."We have agreed to that the RS minister of education, culture and science will be present at the meeting of ministers of culture to be held in Thessaloniki within the next week and I believe that the Government will made such a decision", said Ostojic after the meeting, adding that on that occasion they have also exchanged the statements of principle about some current issues in the region. Ostojic mentioned that they also dealt with the improvement of relations between the two countries, for which, as he stressed, both states are interested in.

SARAJEVO - The president of the RS Economic Council (PK RS), Bozidar Antic, talked in Pale with the advisors to the high representative for economic affairs, Thomas Shiller and Susumo Uedo about the establishment of contacts between RS and the Federation of B&H in the field of economy and the location and role of the two Councils. After the meeting, Antic stated that the PK RS accepts the cooperation with the B&H Economic Council but only "on the equal basis and the basis of the market and economic interests of our subjects". The PK RS president pointed out that these are the first steps towards the formal and legal regulation of these relations which are quite complex and have yet to be solved, for it appears that the non-existing B&H Economic Council is illegally representing the RS economy.

AMSTERDAM - The discussions which are going on for the past few days in Holland about what really had happened in Srebrenica in 1995, when the city was under the UNPROFOR Dutch Battalion's protection, were not fruitful, except for the increasing of tensions in the military top of this country. A several-day-long meeting of 15 senior military officials held in the special operative premises of the Supreme Headquarter, of which the public should have known nothing, was the reason for new mutual accusations and unpleasant words.

BELGRADE - Belgrade students who have been for the last six days non-stop waiting for a police cordon to be removed in Kolarceva Street, were joined by representatives of the Independent Union of the City Transportation Company in Belgrade. About 200 doctors of Belgrade hospitals also joined the students gathered in front of the police cordon in the centre of Belgrade so to offer them the "symbolic protection".

HAMBURG - Members of the Iranian Intelligence Service in Germany closely cooperate with the German branch of the Intelligence Service of Bosnian Muslims (AID), maintains the German weekly, "Focus". Citing sources of the German Intelligence Service and of its department for counterintelligence in the vicinity of Munich, the weekly magazine maintains that the main liaison officer with the Iranians in Germany, Irfan Levakovic, who is only formally the advisor to the chief of the Muslim spy seat in Sarajevo, Kemal Adamovic, while in the reality he is his chief.

BELI MANASTIR - The member of the negotiating team of the Serb District of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srem and president of the Executive Council of the Municipal Assembly of Beli Manastir, Vaso Zigic, stated that the Serbs from the District require a united and indivisible Serb district as a condition for a peaceful reintegration and survival in Croatia. While commenting on the letter which was recently sent by the Croatian Government to the UN Security Council about the peaceful reintegration of the district and in which the formation of a united Serb district was not even mentioned, Zigic concluded that the letter was forwarded without prior consultations with and consent of the Serb side.
